Hello world!
Posted on May 17, 2007 - Filed Under Food, Low Fat, Vegan, Vegetarian
Welcome to my very first blog entry. My husband thought I’d be good at this so I’m going to give it a try and we’ll see how it goes. I guess I’ll just start with some current events. Nothing like diving in headfirst, huh?
I have been on a hot dog kick lately and it is driving me crazy. It is driving me crazy because I have been trying to become a vaguetarian (my idea of being MOSTLY vegetarian) for health reasons. Lately it has been really hard because the weather is getting nicer and there are hot dog vendors all around. The smells are just the epitome of spring to me. I normally wouldn’t eat hot dogs all that much anyway, but now that I’m trying not to have them I’m craving them even more. Doesn’t that just figure?
There has been a lot of hubbub in the vegetarian and vegan blogs lately about baking seitan into sausage and pepperoni-like loaves. This has given me hope that I can succeed in my vaguetarian quest and it also gave me the the idea to make my own hot dogs out of wheat gluten.
Today at my friend’s house, we cooked up an experimental batch and the recipe, although not a complete success, has convinced me that I can do it. I am going to try it again tomorrow, tweaking my recipe and learning from today’s mistakes.

Nice first post.
good evening.
while not going the vegan route i know what you mean since i have been trying to shed some pounds the temptations really come on especially strong.
Hope all is well.
Thanks for stopping in. I will try new low-fat recipes (not just vegetarian) so stop back by anytime and you can see how they turned out! Hugs to you!
Teens, did ya ever figure out how to make a veggie hot dog?
Yeah, sort of. It’s more a wheat gluten hot dog than a veggie dog though. Kinda like a tofu dog I guess but with wheat gluten instead of tofu.
Now I want a hot dog!
Glad you found an alternative, they sound good, what brand are they?
The ones I like are Applegate Farms but they have a lot of types under that name - the one I like says right on it - grass fed beef, organic, no hormones, no antibiotics, no nitrates, and uncured. I don’t eat them often but I just have to have one every couple of months for some reason. I figure since I only buy them so infrequently that I can afford the higher price for the organic, grass-fed. Oh here is a link about them.
