Raspberries

raspberries

These are the raspberries that were growing in my yard. We planted them last year in a big metal tub because we weren’t really ready to work on the outside of the house yet and weren’t sure where we would want to put them permanently. Before you knew it, winter was upon us so we didn’t get them planted and I figured they were as good as dead. But in this case, our laziness paid off because we never cleared all the leaves out of the metal tub and I guess it was enough to mulch the raspberries and keep them from getting damaged because they grew this year and I just finished eating them. They were very small berries but they were delicious. Now I HAVE to find a permanent place for them and get them transplanted before it’s too late this year! If anyone has any tips for raspberries, let me know!

i wish i had a garden (it is kinda of hard when you live in an apartment).

i usually don’t like raspberry flavored things (artificial flavoring). But fresh raspberries taste good in sugary pastries. i absolutely love Raspberry Bars. Here is a simple recipe that calls for raspberry jam but I am sure you can figure something out with your fresh ones:

    3/4 cup butter OR margarine
1 cup firmly packed brown sugar
    1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
    1 teaspoon salt
    1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1 1/2 cups quick cooking oatmeal
    1 (10-ounce) jar raspberry jam

    1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F.
    2. Cream together butter and brown sugar until light and fluffy. In a bowl, combine flour, salt, and baking soda. Stir into the creamed mixture. When well-mixed stir in quick cooking oatmeal (uncooked).
    3. Press half the mixture into a greased 13 x 9-inch baking pan. Spread raspberry jam on top and cover with the remaining oatmeal mixture.
    4. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes. Cool before cutting into bars.

Ariell - this sounds delicious! I love baking with oatmeal too. Yum! Thank you!

Mmm raspberries we have them growing in our garden. What’s your favorite way to eat them?

Oooh - Opal good question! I love to eat them plain as they are! They are soo good just by themselves. Of course, I also love them in preserves, cooked in baked goods like turnovers, or as a filling between cake layers, etc. Raspberries are just my favorite and I don’t think I’ve found a way that I WON’T eat them! LOL.

If you are going to plant them, make sure that they are in a place that has good drainage and gets mostly sun. Raspberries love sun.

I enjoy raspberries plain. I would rather not eat them cooked, in a smoothie, in some tea, or in a pie. Just plain.

Not even in a box, with a fox? LOL. Just teasing! Thanks, for the tips, Mark. I guess I will need to move them out of that metal tub because there can’t be good drainage in there! I can’t count on getting lucky again and having them survive the winter, anyway so I will find a nice sunny place for them.

I love raspberries!! Sorry, no tips for the gardening aspect, but I do have a killer recipe for White Chocolate & Raspberry Muffins if you’re interested … ;-)

I am not sure what location of the country that you are in but Raspberries this late is kinda odd unless you are way up there in like Maine. They are an early summer berry that comes to bear fruit in late June and early July.

Yes, Hannah - I’d love that recipe - the thought of it is making me drool. LOL. Thank you - you can email it to me through my contact link if you like or let me know if you post it.

Mark, I was a little late with this post - I actually ate the last of the raspberries a couple of weeks ago. The bush now looks pretty dead, but yes, I’m in the Northeast area of the states so that may be why mine were so late compared to other people’s. But I wasn’t about to do any moving of that bush until I had gotten every berry out of it that I was going to get! ;)

No tips, but ooooh, I love berry brambles as decorative plantings. Looks like the Brambly Hedge illustrations.

Oh, how yummie those must have been. We’ve not had any luck finding good raspberries this year… Can’t wait to have a garden next move! Good fortune on the transplant.
