Our Kitchen - Before

Posted on July 30, 2007 - Filed Under DIY or D-I-Y, Home Improvement

I’ve been wanting to do this post for a while but had to go back and find my old photos. I apologize for the quality of the pictures but I am no photographer. I’m about as good at taking pictures as I am at wrapping presents. Some of you are wonderful photographers but you weren’t here or just didn’t offer to do the photography for me at the time so you’ll just have to suffer with my reasonable facsimiles. I can’t be good at EVERYthing, now can I? Okay, enough about that.

Here’s what my kitchen used to look like. I’m placing these pictures so you could see what it was like if you stood in front of my stove and then turned around to your right. I don’t have panoramic pictures so again you’ll have to suffer and use your imagination. ;)

Notice the area behind the computer in the first picture - used to be a doorway but in this pic TGH has already closed up part of it to make a pass-through window into the living room. There is another doorway just stage left of the computer so we saw no need to have two doorways only steps away from eachother. Closing one up was going to give us more wall space in both the living room and the kitchen. Notice how the refrigerator and stove are side by side. Notice the very minimum of cabinets/counter space. Notice the odd “L” shape of the room and the window behind the bench (later becomes a door - pics to come in future post). What a weird kitchen this was. But we knew we could make it better. At least it was a decent size!

Below is TGH breaking through the window area from the kitchen to the porch (I don’t have permission to show him so this is what he looks like from the back - isn’t he cute? heehee). We made this into a doorway. The other door to the porch was the one in the fifth picture in the series above with the curtains on it. That door is at the top of the cellar stairs and it made no sense to us to have to go through that little jog as if you were going to go down the cellar just to get to the porch. So having this new doorway from the kitchen was much better.

Teeni- your kitchen does look like it’s a good size; lots of room! It also looks like you have made the floor plan better and more functionable. I look forward to seeing the after or during pictures! When was your house built?

    But do we get afters?

The photos are fine, Teeni - I could even imagine myself standing in your kitchen, looking around! ;-) I can’t wait to see how it looks when you’re all done!!

Heather - the house was built in the late 1940’s. I’m told that my neighborhood was built out of scraps from the housing at an old army fort nearby and that makes a lot of sense considering some of the things we’ve found - like seams in the trim in odd places, etc. LOL

Yes, Snapdragons - I will post more pictures of the “during.” We are still not near the “after” yet. But we have all new floor, ceiling, window/doors, countertops, appliances, and have moved the stove to the opposite wall. Some of the cabinets are finished but we still have more to finish and also drawers to be built. I will try to post tomorrow with those pictures.

Wow I love it! It’s beautiful. I guess I should get a kitchen makeover I just haven’t gotten around to doing so. I will eventually.

Thank you Opal. Wait until you see the “during” pictures that I’ll be posting later.

it is sad that my apartment might just be the same size as your kitchen…ah the life of a college student.

Ariell - I’m sorry you are in such a cramped space right now. That stinks. But you are in college and you are incredibly intelligent so I know you will do well. TGH and I had to work really hard to get this kitchen (that still had to be done over) and it’s still not done yet!!! Anyway, I’m hoping that your brains will get you far so that you don’t HAVE to work as hard as I have (and burn out nearly as many brain cells as I have) and someday your closets will be the size of my kitchen!!

Wow!! You do have a huge kitchen space! I like it too, however I do “see” what you mean. Definitely looking forward to the after pics as well. And I agree!! Your piccies are great. ;)

Oops - Laura I just caught up at your blog and found out that you and your hubby are BOTH musically gifted so that is really cool. You should put a clip of your music on your site. That would be awesome. I’d love to hear your voice.
