This is Floyd

Floyd is a spider plant that my MIL gave me nearly 7 years ago. You know that Hallmark greeting card character, Maxine? She is my favorite crabby old woman (I want to be her someday). Anyway, Maxine has a little dog named Floyd and my plant came in a little mug that looked like Floyd so he ended up being called Floyd. (Yes, I named my plant. People say you should talk to your plants to make them grow and I wasn’t about to talk to something that had no name, now was I?).

Well, Floyd remained about 5 inches tall for the first 5 years that I had him. I had transplanted him twice and, though I realize that we don’t get a lot of sun in my house, I couldn’t fathom how he stayed that small yet didn’t die (since I had been known to kill almost any kind of plant). With his third transplanting, I decided Floyd needed a hanging basket. Surely that would encourage him to grow. So his new home became a hanging basket in a sunny second floor window at the back of the house and in just a couple of weeks Floyd was huge and having babies!!! Long offshoots - three of them, each at least 14 inches long - reached out of his container and each had a mini-Floyd on the end! This was so exciting because I really thought poor Floyd was going to be yet another of my plant casualties. So now I am finally a plant grandmother! I’ve been wondering where I should register for my plant baby shower. ![]()

The love their hanging baskets. Congrats Floyd you finally got thought to mommy and let her know you wanted to hang not sit like a boring plant!
I talk to my plants also.
I’ve always loved Maxine also. She has always given me something to giggle about.
OT
I honestly just thought since he was so small he’d look really pathetic in the basket so I was trying to wait until he was bigger, but I’m glad I stopped waiting - now he actually looks like he is two plants! Floyd may be my next puppet twins!!!!
Oh by the way you can view my other website by clicking on the title. Eventually I’ll start sending my relatives, friends, and acquaintances there. I also added an RSS feed for my recipe website going to my recipe website you will find my alternative healing website in the RSS feed. I’m trying to cover all the bases.
LOL, Opal. It only took me 5 long years to figure out he needed a hanging basket. I’m a little slow, I guess.
Thanks for the website info Opal. I know that is one I’ll probably be returning to over and over.
Aww congratulations on Floyd’s improvement and on becoming a plant grannie!
I love spider plants!
I have heard that THEY especially help clean the air(or maybe it is all plants)
I love Maxine too…he he he!
It’s nice to meet you Floyd!
Spider plants are tough cookies, they will tolerate all kinds of neglect, but when you love them they will thrive. Floyd looks very happy!
I think merrimerri is right, I think I’ve heard spider plants are really good for pulling toxins out of the air. He’ll be a good friend!
Thank you Heather! I have heard that about spider plants too! Hopefully Floyd does his job well.
Floyd is beautiful and looks healthy and happy. It is exciting when you see your plants thriving. You have been trying a long time to get those little ones. Congratulations!
Thanks, Phyllis!
Hugs to you!

[…] of course, and it must relate somehow to the plants and their well-being. For example, in the original post’s comment section, my niece handed me a bottle of mountain spring water with a bow around it […]
Congrats on the babies!! I wondered how Floyd got his name, cute story!
