Treat that Can’t be Beat

This was a yummy, easy meal. Know what it is? It’s American Chop Suey but made with ground seitan instead of ground beef so it is completely vegetarian and vegan. Yummy too. And did I mention that it was easy?
And did I mention WHY it was so easy? Cuz TGH made it and not me!!! LOL.

i had american chop suey once when i was 8 years old. not asian by any means but still delicious. i am gonna have to try making this soon. it really is a filling meal. looks delicious. so glad it’s vegan. doing one for the environment one yummy meal at a time. go teeni
LOL. Yeah, I’m not really sure how it got it’s name as it definitely doesn’t have any asian flavor to it at all. It’s more Italian if anything. Thanks Ariell. I’m far from perfect but I DO try.

you know, I don’t think I’ve ever tried seitan…is it anything like tempeh? that looks really good, I might have to get that recipe, it looks like a great fall/winter meal as well.
Hmm - I have never had tempeh but I know it is made of whole soybeans,right? So I’d have to say that seitan is NOT like that. Seitan is made of wheat gluten (the stuff that is left after you rinse away all the bran and starch from whole wheat flour), I use the terms interchangeably. You can then shape and simmer it in soy sauce (that is traditionally how it is done in asian cooking) but I like to make a roast of it and slice it or grind it and then it can be used in more american type dishes as a meat replacement. I can’t eat a lot of asian food because of the soy so the wheat gluten seitan allows me to vegetarian-ize a lot of dishes I was already used to eating and helps me become more of a vegetarian easier. I should write a post about this sometime. Hmmmm.
Teeni- I was curious about seitan so I looked for it today when I went to the co-op here in town. I found it and it even looks like meat; I didn’t get it because it was kind of expensive and I was limiting my purchases for today. BUT, I want to try it. Yes, your idea of making a roast of it sounds great. Do you ever then make a sandwich “meat” out of your roast seitan? I wonder what that would taste like.
Heather, I usually buy instant wheat gluten and make my own seitan from scratch - it costs a little over three dollars a box but I can get two good size roasts out of it and each roast gives me at least three meals, usually more. It takes a little getting used to, to season it to taste good if you make it yourself. But yes, either the already prepared kind or the one I make can definitely be made into a sandwich. The taste all depends on how you season the seitan. I did do a post recently with a seitan sandwich - just go back one page on my blog and it should be there.

I’ve tried and made it but I’m not a big fan of it. When I make it my friends suck it down so at least they like it, lol. My daughter loves it also.
Well, you must be doing something right if your friends will suck it down. It’s not my favorite thing in the world either, but it does help make the transition to meatless a lot easier for me.
