I’m Still a Dishwasher

dishwashing

TGH and I argue about this every so often.

We have a beautiful new dishwasher which we bought because we are renovating our kitchen. I love it and it works great. The problem is this - I sometimes spend long hours in the kitchen cooking things from scratch and there are just some utensils that I need to use again right away like my wire whisk or wooden spoons. It isn’t worth putting them in the dishwasher because if I do that then I have to wait until the dishwasher is full to run it. It is just TGH and I so sometimes it takes a day or two to fill the dishwasher with dirty dishes. So, I like to wash these items by hand right away so they are ready for me to use again at a moments notice.

Then there are other dishes like those plastic tupperware-type containers that I don’t even bother putting in the dishwasher because they are so light. These are the ones that just tend to blow around in there and when the machine is finished running its course, I open it and inevitably find these bowls on their sides or right side up and filled with yucky dishwater. So they need to be washed again anyway. I hate that.

TGH, on the other hand, will run the dishwasher sometimes when I’m out of the house and he probably doesn’t understand why I do wash some things by hand. Usually he is not baking something from scratch so he wouldn’t understand the need to wash and re-use a utensil right away. Hmmm. Also, he is not usually the one to empty the dishwasher when it is done running - somehow that part always falls to me so he doesn’t have to deal with all the lightweight containers filled with dirty dishwater.

No wonder he doesn’t see it my way! Fortunately for him he has so many other redeeming qualities! ;)

I’m the complete opposite!! I HATE (and I mean HATE!!!) washing dishes, it is my least favourite household chore!! So when we got our dishwasher 2 years ago I couldn’t believe the difference. Granted, I am usually the one who has to empty it, but I don’t mind doing that.
Like you, I don’t put the light plastic containers in the dishwasher, they get washed by hand. But Rob is the one who washes the dishes 99.9% of the time, because he knows how much I hate it, and I’d rather cook or do any other job instead (whereas he doesn’t mind).

I really shouldn’t complain - I get to stay home so TGH brings home the bacon. So it makes sense that I do the dishes. He just doesn’t understand why I still do some by hand when we have a dishwasher. Now maybe he’ll read this and understand. LOL

I do the same Teeni. Most of the time I hate unloading the dishwasher much much more than doing dishes by hand.

Isn’t it funny that no matter how great your spouse is, there is still something that causes a bit of a stir! It’s what makes you laugh though :-)
Yeah, I really don’t unloading it either! It’s not that bad really - I wonder if it is just because it always seems like doing the same thing over and over again? LOL

Now that is something I don’t mind washing dishes. I haven’t bought a dishwasher yet. :-)
With all the baking I used to do (and hope to get back to), I can’t imagine doing all those dishes by hand. I HAVE noticed that eating raw and simple meals really does make life easier in the dishwashing area! That is why I like those meals with simple ingredients now. But I am one to measure everything into separate little containers or dishes first before baking so I use quite a few items and it makes cleaning up afterwards a real chore so when I bake, I’m very thankful for my dishwasher. I am working on finding and collecting really simple recipes that don’t use as many dishes so I may be posting about some of those soon too - Opal, I always check your site looking for these too! :)

The Dishwasher is MY duty. Mostly because my wife is horrible at it.
First, she has no spacial awareness. She will load the dishwasher so haphazardly that only about 12 items will fit in the machine and then she runs it wasting water and electricty. I will often have to restack the dishes in the machine after her and then there is room to put more (lots more) in.
Second, she will just put things like the silverware in all the little holders randomly. When I load I keep all the spoons in one slot, forks in another, etc… Same with all the plates and bowls and cups together. This makes unloading a simple and easy task.
Is it OCD of me? Probably. But it is so much more efficient and less of a headache.
As for washing in the sink, I am a fill the sink with hot soapy water to wash dishes. Wife likes to just run the water over the dishes in the sink without filling up the sink. She will pour out some dish liquid over the tiem to be washed and then rinse. I’ve complained to her that this is a waste too. She usually gets really mad at me and then tells me to do it then.
Don’t get me started on laundry. I can’t tell you how many pairs of pink socks or pink tighty whities I have because she will just throw everything into one load.
Sorry for rambling teeni although it is what I do best. I probably could post all of this into my blog. LOL.

Ooooo - Now I know why nobody complains when I do this to them. It really is kinda fun to get long comments on your posts. It just feels weird leaving them. LOL. So don’t worry one bit about it Mark. Maybe you DID just spark yourself an idea for a post, huh? That is cool too. I might have to start a game of volleyblog with you if you do that! ;) I don’t think it is OCD of you to load the dishwasher that way - I load mine a certain way too because it makes putting them away a little easier and less steps when like things are together.

my husband is a packing master. Whenever we go on a trip - he packs the car. when we moved - he packed the truck. My job was to bring the items TO him. It’s no surprise to me that he can fit more into the dishwasher than i can. and i’d be more than willing to let him do the dishwasherly duties….only it’d never get done.

as for a sink full of dishes I’M the one who fills the sink with soapy water, and HE is the one who’d rather wash each dish seperately under running water.

But we manage. Honestly, if he would just put his cereal bowl IN the dishwasher each morning, i would be happy enough.

LOL. It’s so funny how those little things seem to annoy us at times but really when you think about it - it’s those same little things that we would miss if they weren’t around! I just wish I’d remember that myself when I see those little annoying things! LOL.

I have worked as a cook and in my early days spent MANY hours doing the dirty pots created by my slobby boss, the head chef.
In my own life, I had to wash dishes by hand until just 2 years ago, when my Mom gave us a dishwasher.
I just love it, and like you Teeni, I especially appreciate it when cooking or baking.
BUT unlike you I use it daily and even do my little plastic containers (on the top rack)
They come out so much cleaner… ;)
If I could just get those plastic containers to not blow around in there! Is it possible that my dishwasher is just too powerful? LOL Maybe I just need to pack them tighter so they don’t move or something. It wouldn’t surprise me if I were doing something wrong. Cuz THAT never happens. LOL

LOL must be a day for spouse talk. I just posted about mine being in the dog house. I do the dishes like you do Teeni.

LOL> We ALL have THOSE days!

  10. Calamity (54 comments.) on September 26th, 2007 12:39 pm

on the tuperware things, I put mine on the top rack and put them very tight, with the lip of a bowl or small pot against them. That usually works. when it doesnt, I go ahead and washt hem by hand LOL

I think if I pack them in tight like you said, with a lip of a bowl or pot against them, that might work. I’ll have to try it. I’ll do anything to avoid containers filled with dishwater! LOL.

Are you joking? Id die without one haha!

teeni what next up? do i get to hear how you wash your clothes or vaccumm?

Ps i am updateing my blog now :)
Hey if you didn’t want to read all these exciting household chore facts about me you wouldn’t be here, right? LOL. Great that you updated your blog! I’ll be by to check it out! ;)

  12. merrimerri on September 26th, 2007 6:50 pm

my dishwasher has a couple of little basket that have LIDS so the tiniest of plastic dishes won’t fly around..
Or Calamity’s idea sounds good too!
But maybe your dishwasher IS really powerful.

Well, it IS really powerful but I really haven’t spent too much time trying to pack those plastic containers in there smartly. I can give it a shot and see what happens.

We have a dishwasher and I still get lazy sometimes or have to put them thru the dishwasher twice…sigh…

Hey Harmonia!!! Oooh - I hate having to run things through there twice. Fortunately that doesn’t happen much because this is a really good dishwasher and is new, but every so often something just doesn’t get cleaned right. I usually get mad and just do it by hand because I feel like “Yeah, you HAD your chance to get it right and you blew it!” But hopefully I’m not the only one who talks to her dishwasher like that. LOL

I don’t mind hand washing and you are right..with some cooking you have to wash things right away to use again but I think that getting in the habit of cleaning as you go along really makes things easier. Since we moved we don’t have a dishwasher and there really isn’t room for anything anyways. My husband actually was very good with loading and emptying the dishwasher. Now I do dishes and he will put everything away. He is a nice guy.

Aww. That is sweet and I’m glad you got one of the good guys! I did too but I need to pick on him every so often so he doesn’t get to thinking that he’s perfect or anything. LOL. (Actually he IS perfect but don’t ever tell him). ;)
