The Game of Penny Candy

Happy Halloween to my buddies who celebrate it. And Happy Wednesday to those that don’t. I’m not dressing up but I did dress up my Meez character for you. She’s a little devil. So unlike me. LOL.

Here’s another game we can go to town with. Let’s just list all the penny candy names we can think of. What a perfect time for candy! Game restriction - no gum (as we already had a game for that)! UPDATE: Apparently I live in a very small world because I think everyone knows what I’m talking about when I said penny candy. But since many people have questioned it in the comments section I will explain - penny candy is the candy you used to be able to get for about a cent at the local convenience or general store, like one gumball was one cent or three peppermints for one cent or five sourballs for five cents. It was cheap candy for small amounts of money (unlike today, where even the smallest of candies seem to cost at least twenty-five cents). So that is what penny candy is. I apologize for the confusion and will try to remember to be more clear in the future! :)

Anyone can join the game so feel free to jump in even if you are new here. I’ll start with:

NOTE: Post edited to alphabetize and add reader submissions to the list. We now have 60 items on the list (my entries in pink)!

    What’s Penny Candy??

Oh, Hannah! Penny candy is candy that we used to be able to get for about a penny in the old convenience stores that used to be more like general stores. You could buy things like a gumball one at a time or a couple of hard candies for 1 cent! So you can list any old candy you used to get as a kid that is either hard to find now or that used to be a lot cheaper than it is now. I hope you have some you remember!

LOL. No, I can never use that bike animation again because I know how much it irritates you! ;)
YAY! I was wondering if someone would remember Mary Janes! Squirrel Nut Zippers, huh? I have heard of those but never had one - what are they anyway? LOL

you steal all the games people actually comment on ;)
I gave you a game that I thought you’d like since it had to do with baseball. I’m sorry nobody really commented on it. You never know how your readers will react until you try and sometimes you have to try more than once. Your readers were probably shocked into silence because you had never done anything like that before. Don’t give up. I’m sure you can come up with something else. I’ll let you know if I think of anything too. ;)

Thanks Teeni for the definition! We don’t have “pennies” here so ours must be 1 Cent Candy, LOL. But we don’t even have 1, 2 or 5 cent pieces anymore!!

Okay, here are some NZ lollies (as we call them) that you used to be able to buy at the dairy for between 1-5 cents each.

    Milk Bottles
    Milkshakes
    Jaffas
    Giant Jaffas
    Snifters
    Minties
    Pebbles
    Giant Pebbles
    Coke Bottles
    Eskimos
    Hard Jubes
    Soft Jubes
    Jet Planes
    Snakes
    Pineapple Lumps
    Licorice Allsorts
    Fizzy Sherbets
    Mackintosh’s
    Spacemen
    Smokers

These are great, Hannah! I’m adding them. Oh by the way, I think we have milk bottles and coke bottles here too. Aren’t they the wax bottles with the sweet syrupy liquid inside? I don’t know what the rest are but hey, lots of candies have funny names when you think about it. ;)

If you add mine to your list, you might need to put some kind of disclaimer as all your other readers will be thinking “what are Pineapple Lumps and Jaffas” … these are iconic Kiwi lollies that you can only buy here! :-) ;-)
That just makes them extra special, Hannah. If anyone asks me, I’m just going to tell them to read your comments! LOL.

It’s okay to do “research” Kaylee. We don’t call that cheating here. ;) I’m adding them!

    Sour Patch Kids ;)
YAY. I was also wondering if those would show up. I’m adding them!

  13. hrsj (105 comments.) on October 31st, 2007 8:13 pm

squirrel nut zippers is also a band out of North Carolina.

what classifies candy as penny candy?
    Rolos?

I think it is candy that used to be available for $.01 to $.05 back in the old days at the general stores. Most candy probably fits in that range as long as it is not too new. I’ll add Rolos to the list. But maybe I should just have called it the Candy Game and not confused everyone. LOL.

  14. TGH on October 31st, 2007 10:21 pm

My sweeties should have been smarties. I guess I could have used some when I posted.

LOL. I’ll fix it, honey. Thanks for the correction.

    what are penny candies?

Wow - I can’t believe how many people don’t know what they are. Maybe the term is a regional thing where I grew up? Penny candies are the candies that you used to be able to get for a cent or two at the local convenience or general store. I think I will clarify this on my post so everyone doesn’t keep asking. Sorry for the confusion, Jen! :)

  16. Red (143 comments.) on November 1st, 2007 1:50 am

I dont think it’s necessarily a regional thing, where folks don’t know what “penny candy” is .. perhaps it’s an age thing. Wasn’t penny candy around more in the olden days . . ya know, when they still had dirt floors at the local general store. . . heheh :]
Us young folk wasn’t given the luxury of PENNY candy .. oh no.

Oh, and I dont have a list .. everyone already named what I had thought of!

LOL. C’mon - I’m not THAT old, you all! ;) Your comments are always fun even if you don’t contribute to the list, Ms. Red!

YAY! I was wondering if someone would remember Mary Janes!

If I remember correctly they were made in Maryland.

Squirrel Nut Zippers, huh? I have heard of those but never had one - what are they anyway? LOL

as the name implies they are squirrels nuts! The squirrels, and quite a few people, weren’t happy about that which is why they no longer make them. ;-)
    http://www.oldtimecandy.com/squirrel-nut-zippers.htm

Arrggh! LOL. Opal, you kill me! First you’re all quiet and then you zing me with a good one! LOL. Thanks for the link - it’s neat to see how other people have good memories of the candy too. They are similar to Mary Janes. I should have called this the Game of Old-Time Candy! That would have been better. Oh well. :)

  18. VeggieGirl (74 comments.) on November 1st, 2007 7:39 am

wow, I can’t think of any penny candies that aren’t already on the above list :0( but hey, this was a fun post!! :0D Hope you had a happy Halloween!!

Thanks, VeggieGirl! TGH (the hubby) and I did have a nice evening. I hope you did too! And you can always join a game in the future so don’t feel bad just because this one didn’t work for you! :)

    Happy November to you Teeni.
Now being older than you - in MY DAy - sweets this side of the pond I used to be able to buy black jack chews for a farthing - that is 4 for a penny - 240 pence to a £. Along with fruit salad chews. Makes my mouth water at the memory!
I see the price of black jack chews are astronomical by comparison to the good old days…

    http://www.treasureislandsweets.co.uk/acatalog/Black_Jack_Chews.html

but then i don’t know what the going rate is for pocket money.
    ;-) love from penny x

You are still very young, my friend! And thank you for giving me the link to this candy. I love learning these types of things about my blog buddies and it is neat to see the kind of sweets you had as a child. I’m adding Black Jack Chews and Fruit Salad Chews to the List!

I didn’t have a chance to come back yesterday and today any that I can think of are already on there :-) You snooze, you loose!
    :-)
LOL. I figured everyone would have tons to add after robbing, I mean seeing, their kids’ treats from last night. I guess everyone is in sugar shock today. ;)

  22. persephonesawakening (13 comments.) on November 1st, 2007 5:47 pm

i don’t think it’s a regional term.. just something that hasn’t been around for a while. i do remember buying some candies at the park store for 1 cent each. they were good, hard candies. i don’t know what the name of them was though?

Oh, you young’uns! :) I don’t remember either - there were so many!

  23. TGH on November 1st, 2007 9:13 pm

I grew up with a penny candy store near my house. Of course, little cost a penny when I was a kid and by the time they closed a few years ago, the cheapest was maybe 5 cents. I think it was more like a store to buy not your ordinary vending machine candy. There were smaller bite sized candy that you would normally buy in bulk, but you could get as individual pieces. Things like Fun Dip (not on the list) and others listed above that were more novelty candy. I think over time the suppliers stopped making most of it and they started mostly selling smaller versions of normal candy bars and more expensive bulk candies like Jelly Belly jelly beans. You could get this stuff in the regular stores, so I think the store just lost its uniqueness.

Wow. You are chatty tonight, honey! ;)

Sorry I am late on this one. thanks for sticking with me with my blog issues. :)
Well, I think you are slightly (okay, severely) paranoid but you have always been nice to me so it’s the least I can do. ;) Hugs to you!

  25. Melsie (51 comments.) on November 2nd, 2007 12:56 pm

I really miss the penny candy!! I used to love going to the store with a quarter and getting so many little candies out of it!! Now my girls ask what they can buy for a nickle or dime and literally they can’t buy a thing!! It’s crazy!! But my favorite was those little raspberries. I didn’t see it posted though!

Sad how much candy costs these days, especially when it’s made with mostly cheap junk. LOL. We still love it though! I think I know what raspberries you mean - I liked those too but I don’t know the name so I’m just going to add “Raspberries” to the list. Thanks for the add!

Penny candy was what I would get when I took in the soft drink - which we called pop - bottles I would find in ditches. Each glass bottle had a 2¢ deposit, yet people would still toss them out their car window.

We had a little neighborhood market on about 2 1/2 blocks away from where we lived in North Platte, Nebraska, that had more useful goods than any modern convenience store - and less junk food! That’s where I would get candy for a penny, popsicles and ice cream bars for a nickel and pop for a dime, not that I was able to get any of that very often.

The time period that I’m talking about was the early 1960s.

Yeah - we still referred to it that way even into the 80’s. It just didn’t cost a penny anymore. ;)
