Want to See Me Naked?

Posted on November 5, 2007 - Filed Under Etsy/E-Bay, Flowers/Gardening, Polls/Opinions

The things a girl’s got to do to get some attention around here! Sheesh!

Okay, now that I have your attention - here’s my real dilemma. Remember the floral arrangements I made and used for a prize in my Pay It Forward post? I want to make some more of those cute floral arrangements and sell them. I just don’t know if I should try having an E-bay store or an Etsy shop. Do any of my readers have one of these? I’d appreciate any advice/experience you could share with me because I’m not sure which way would be best. I think E-Bay is the more recognized site but it may also be the wrong choice because most people associate it with auctions and getting good deals on used stuff. These would be new items but handcrafted. So then Etsy seems to make more sense.

What do YOU think and would you ever consider buying one of those silk floral arrangements and have it sent to someone as a gift? I’m not asking you to promise to buy one, I’m just asking if you think it would be something that people would be willing to purchase. I’d try to include a tag that can be personalized for no extra cost so it could be for any occasion.

Oh, and for those of you who came to see me naked, I do not want to disappoint. Here’s a picture. Yes, I know the photo is only of my hand, but the rest of me was naked when I took the photo…trust me. ;)

Wow! Those are beautiful arrangements, Teeni! I love how they’re in the teacups.
I loooove etsy.com but it’s not well known. I think you’d do well on that if you advertised .. like here and through word of mouth/email with folks you know locally.
Like you said with Ebay, it’s known more for auctions and deals.
Between the two, I would do etsy, and let everyone you know and their brother/mother/dog know where/what you’re doing .. and of course, have a permanent link here.

    Oh, and nice finger!

LOL. Thanks so much Ms. Red. I do appreciate your feedback a LOT! I hope I don’t offend anyone with my naked finger. Next time I’ll put a hat on it (or at least a face)! ;)

Could you do both?? We have a similar thing to E-Bay, called Trade Me. More and more people are selling their handmade crafts on there, and often they sell at other places too (like actual markets, or stores, or from an online craft place).

I think you will do really well - the flowers are sooooo pretty!! I would definitely buy something like that for a gift.

Love the naked hand. You’re pretty brave, baring it for the whole world to see!!!

Yes, Hannah - I could do both. I guess I just was trying to avoid jumping headfirst in and then finding myself drowning as I tend to do so I wanted to know if my readers thought one was better than the other. If there is overwhelming evidence either way then I’m sure it will help sway my decision. Trade me sounds a lot like Etsy. I like the idea of having my own little virtual store front. Thank you for the kind words about the flowers. I just keep thinking they would be a neat thing to send a friend when they’re feeling down or as a small congratulation type thing for someone you couldn’t go see in person right away.

LOL - yes it took a lot for me to do the naked hand but I finally worked up the courage! ;)

I’ve sold on Etsy, but not on eBay (although I’ve bought there a lot). I think the tradeoff is that, on Etsy, you will have a much more pleasant experience and sell to much saner, friendlier people… but you will also be selling to a smaller audience. I had lots of stuff in my store that never sold at all, even though it was cute and reasonably priced (or so I thought!)

LOL @ selling to saner, friendlier people. I think you are right there though. It seems I’ve been getting on quite well with craftsy people. They can definitely be friendlier, but I’m not qualified to speak on the “saner” side cause I’m not sure where I fall on that scale myself. LOL. Seriously, thank you for this input, Kat. I appreciate that you took the time to respond to me. It’s good for me to get your opinion since you have experience with Etsy. ;) Thank you!

Well, I love the flowers. Mine sits here looking so pretty all day!! I would buy for gifts and probably a few more for me! LOL I dont know much about E-bay or Etsy, so I cant really help you there. Nice title, and naked pic. ;) You are a brave woman! LOL

LOL. Thanks, Calamity! I’m so glad you like your flowers. And I do appreciate your opinion about them whether you’ve used E-bay and Etsy or not! So thank you very much for letting me know.

i would try etsy because it is more “artsy.” i just got my account yesterday and it seems really good so far. you pay $0.20 for a listing of 1 item but that is over a 4 month period. it seems like some people on etsy are also willing to trade goods in lieu of a monetary payment.

Thanks, Ariell. I’ve been looking at both of them for a while and just couldn’t decide. I had that post started after I did sent my Pay It Forward prizes out because I knew I’d want my fellow blogger’s opinions before I made the jump. I just put my first auction out at e-bay yesterday as well so I could test those waters too. I do like that the listings are inexpensive at Etsy and that you automatically have your store front. It also does seem better to be in the “artsier” arena. That is cool that some people are willing to make trades. I really appreciate your opinion - it means a lot to me so thank you for commenting. Keep me posted on your Etsy experience too. :)

i have purchased from both ebay and etsy, i have to say i found the purchase from etsy to be very buyer friendly, but it may have been because i wasn’t competing in stressful auctions for the things i wanted. I vote etsy, but that’s just me.

also, i promise soonish i will post my teacup.

Oh, this is good info! Thank you Laura! I’m glad to hear it. Your opinion means a lot, especially now that I’m getting one from the purchaser’s side of things. Don’t you worry about posting the teacup. I’m just glad that you let me know when you received it so I didn’t have to worry. I understand how busy you are with work and that whole novel writing thing so I am definitely not going to put any pressure on you, buddy! ;) I can wait - your posts are always worth it!

I disagree about Ebay you have regular folks with stores selling on there and the ones that market themselves well do very well. I know a few personally that are doing very well.

I’m about to open an online store on Ebay. I’ve checked out my competition for a few months. I’ve built up a positive reputation by selling small items so I have feedback. I believe I will do very well on there. I’ll be selling other places also simply because I’m not about to put all my eggs into one basket. ;-)
Oh, good - I’m glad you stopped in Opal - you know I value your opinion! You are going to be selling handcrafted items in the E-Bay store, right? I was wondering about that on E-Bay too. I agree with you about putting all your eggs in one basket. I have to try and figure whether the fees I’ll encounter will still allow me to make some money or not.

  9. katesmudge on November 5th, 2007 5:08 pm

Now that was quite the tease! Your silk-flower arrangements are beautiful. I imagine you could sell them in no time. I’m sorry that I can’t give you any advice re: ebay or etsy. I imagine you’ll see the arrangements in either place.

    Keep us posted!

LOL. I’ve got to keep things interesting over here, Kate! Thanks for the kind words about the arrangements.

  10. Kami (301 comments.) on November 5th, 2007 7:32 pm

Ha! You certainly did get our attention. I was wondering if things were going x rated over here at the tea room :-)
Etsy seems to be popular with the crafty people but I know nothing about it and have only used e-bay once.

Good luck, it’s a great idea!

Thanks, Kami. I’m not really looking to get rich (although I wouldn’t necessarily turn down the option if it presented itself, haha), but I do hope to make some pocket change so that the hubby can continue to afford to keep me. ;)

  11. kaylee (67 comments.) on November 5th, 2007 7:55 pm

That title had me afraid to read any further for a minute ;)

I would buy one….but, heck I buy everything that is cute and not too expentsive.

    I am very fustrated now…after being at the dr.for 9 hours,YES I sAID 9 HOURS!

I commented at your site, Kaylee!

  12. antibarbie on November 5th, 2007 10:37 pm

OoooOOOoo! I want one of those for my house! Seriously, I love flowers but I never can convince myself to spend all that money to buy them when they die so quick.

LOL. I know what you mean, AntiBarbie! With the exception of my current spider plant, I have killed almost every plant I’ve ever owned. Talk about a brown thumb! But my spider plant for some reason has lasted so long (7+ years and counting) that I named the plant and even had a plant baby shower for it. That’s how happy I was! LOL. I know, I know - I need to get out more. ;) Thanks for the nice words. I will be trying to keep the price reasonable so that anyone could afford a little teacup of everlasting silk flowers to send to a friend if they would like (or even keep for themselves).

While etsy is smaller than ebay I still know of a LOT of people that have etsy sites. So to me, etsy is huge! It is VERY popular and I think people make really good sales through it. It does cater to a crowd who appreciates handmade things so you would fit right in with that. Maybe look and see what else is at etsy in the same category of your arrangements and see if you get a feel for it. {maybe you’ve already done that} So my vote would be for etsy because I think your time and effort would be more appreciated by the people that shop there.
My favorite arrangement is the one on the top {visible} shelf, all the way on the right, in a teacup; I like the shape and variety of flowers! Nice!

LOL - Heather you have good taste! That one is the same one I liked the best and I actually don’t have it anymore as I gave it as a gift to my mother-in-law! She always has us for dinner on the holidays and she always decorates her house seasonally so I wanted to give her something pretty she could put out all season. She loved it! Some of the others were just trial runs and are even in paper cups as my mom and I were experimenting. But I had to take a picture then because they just all looked so cute sitting on the shelves. :)
Thank you for commenting - I hope you know that I also value your opinion very highly. I think you have a good point about the handmade things being more appreciated at etsy. I bet a lot of the sellers are also buyers and vice-versa. I just know I want to start small soon and see where it takes me.

or a glove? ;) I am trying to learn more about marketing…and business savvy. Opal’s da girl! :)
Yes, she is da girl! I really miss her being around more. I definitely got spoiled by her. I’m starting to think that I will need to try out both venues and do a little experimentation and see where each gets me. Then maybe I’ll do a review post on each of them. Hmmm. Always getting ideas on here and there just aren’t enough hours in the day! ;) Now, now - I couldn’t have worn a glove or my hand wouldn’t have been naked and that would have been dishonest. I wouldn’t do that to my readers!

  15. Melsie (53 comments.) on November 6th, 2007 11:14 am

I have never heard of Etsi before, but have bought and sold on E-bay. Some of the people who win the auction can be pretty grouchy and want to pay as little as possible on items. Because everyone would want it for dirt cheap I don’t think it would be the best decision to put a lot on there. If you put one up and see how it goes would probably be a better idea.

I would definitely want one and want to buy one for someone else!! They are beautiful!!

Thanks so much for contributing your opinion, Melsie! I’m really glad that so many of my buddies are helping me out by sharing that info with me!

  16. Melsie (53 comments.) on November 6th, 2007 11:14 am

And I love the naked hand!! 2 funny! But thanks for limiting the picture to that! lol

Thanks, Melsie! Yeah, I like to give you guys a little chuckle. I really don’t mean to give you outright heart attacks! heehee

  17. Paige Stanton (32 comments.) on November 6th, 2007 12:02 pm

I vote Etsy as well. I love the teacups and I’m sure they would be a great seller! I’m biased though as I already have my very own. Sorry for the lack of comments lately, I’ve gotten a little slack in keeping up on reading, with all this NaBloPoMo posting!

Oh, thanks so much for responding, Paige. I really appreciate how everyone has been offering me their opinions. Sometimes it’s hard to get people to offer their opinions so thank you for that. Oh, I forgot for a second about the NaBloPoMo thing. I hope that is going well for you and now that makes your comment mean even more to me. Thanks for taking the time! Don’t worry you can catch up later! ;)

  18. teeni on November 6th, 2007 9:37 pm

This post is from my buddy Lisa at Temporal Millionaire but didn’t come over correctly so I’ve fixed it and added it here.

Hey teeni. My vote is for etsy…for many of the same reasons. The artsy crowd who likes to buy handmade as well as a friendly crowd. I’ve had nothing but good times over there since I started my Travel Kitty Project. I don’t know a lot about ebay but i stumbled on etsy and loved it so I went with them.

Thanks, Lisa! I guess Etsy people are pretty well known for being friendly. That is good to know. Thanks so much for letting me know what you think. I appreciate and value your opinion because I know you are ahead of me by a bit! ;) Hope all is well with you!

  19. Beth Ellen (212 comments.) on November 7th, 2007 1:05 am

Hey, I meant to say…it would be nice to see them more close up. They look nice. do you look for special cups and saucers for these?

I haven’t taken any close ups yet of them. But I will. They are being stored at my sister’s house at the moment. I will let you know when I’ve got some pics to post. I do look for special cups and saucers. I like the miniature ones - espresso sized or child’s tea set size - they ship better (easier and lighter to pack and save on shipping costs). I keep an eye out for them at any shop I go to.

  20. Opal Tribble/ (8 comments.) on November 7th, 2007 4:32 am

    Hey Teeni,
I’m not selling my handcrafted items on there yet although now that I think of it I did in the past. I completely forgot about that. That was about five years ago. I sold hand made jewelery and my beauty products. That was before I had my own website but I still kept my place up there after I had a website and was able to effectively drive my Ebay customers to my regular website which of course meant I received more money.

I never had a problem with bad customers or bad buyers on Ebay. I probably had about 100 customers the time I was selling on Ebay.

This time around I’m buying items in bulk and selling them for profit on Ebay. I have bought a lot on Ebay over the years but under a different user name. I only had one bad experience with a buyer. They weren’t rude they just did not have the product in a timely fashion. They were a drop shipper. I got my money back within a few weeks. I followed up with Ebay and Paypal.

Oh, this is good info, Opal! Thanks so much. I didn’t really think E-Bay would be all that bad to deal with - I mean it works well for thousands of people after all. But then again, I do know there are different feelings involved with handcrafted items. Some people do appreciate them and all the work that goes into them and some people don’t so I’m sure that must affect how people feel when dealing with the two different selling methods. I’m glad your experience with E-Bay was a good one! One of my sister-in-laws uses it quite a bit and I’ve never heard her complain. I actually have an auction up right now but I’m not going to talk too much about it until after so I can see how it goes. ;)

  21. Opal Tribble/ (8 comments.) on November 7th, 2007 4:34 am

…regardless of where you sell you can run into a bad customer//buyer just like you can run into someone fabulous. ;-)
This is a great point. Just like Thomas’ experience recently. I’ll remember this. ;)

LOL…I saw Teeni naked! lol teehee
It’s been a hellish week…haven’t been around much. I didn’t log in on facebook today and wondered if you joined. If that was you…I sent you a message…check your inbox! :) I will try and catch up on your blog tomorrow night!!!

Yes, I have noticed it has been quiet over at your site. I was worried about you but didn’t want to scare you off by asking where you’ve been. LOL. I kind of knew you had been busy though, you had mentioned earlier that you had a lot of things coming up. They sounded like good things though so I was happy for you! Anyway, we’ve missed you around here - I haven’t been as active in the Zoi lately - it’s hard for me to keep up with both the blog and there but I figure as long as I check in every couple days I shouldn’t miss too much. Anyway - wonderful to see you! **Hugs**

Teeni - there’s obviously no end to your many talents. I still cannot believe where you find the time for all of these along with your blogging activites. how long do you set aside for sleeping?

I bet you had loads of hits with the “Want to see me naked” title - crafty you! ;-0

HA! Penny, I thought there’d be more hits too! I was rather insulted. LOL. I have noticed a slight increase in dirty spam though. I guess I deserve it, though. LOL.

Ah, time - there never is enough. I end up staying up way too late each night on the computer and then staying in bed too late in the morning. I am trying to change my hours around a little bit and manage my time better. But thank you so much for the kind words. :)

LOL. Thanks Cody - Sorry if I confused you but yes, that headline definitely got a lot of attention. I appreciate your leaving a comment though - that was nice and friendly faces are always welcome here. Hope your new year is going well and that it will be a good one for you!
