A Curious Thing

Posted on November 6, 2007 - Filed Under Teeni Poem, Writing/Blogging

One day, I happened upon WriterChick’s blog after she had handed out writing assignments to her blogger friends. I was so impressed with how she assigned each of her friends a task that was uniquely chosen for their personalities. I admit it, I was jealous and wanted to be included. Honesty pays because I mentioned my feeling in a comment at her site, and Annie came up with an assignment just for me! I hope I did okay. She probably thinks I forgot because although I practically begged for my assignment, I am just getting around to posting it now. I’m sure she doesn’t realize just how much I sweated over this. My assignment was to rewrite a scene from Alice Through the Looking Glass but to put myself in the role of the star.

Well, I had never actually read this story all the way through - I’m almost embarassed to admit that the story kind of freaked me out as a kid. I also never read Alice in Wonderland and have never seen the Disney movie of the same name all the way through. But I figured as an adult I could handle it. And fortunately for me, I was able to find the electronic text pretty readily! So here is my take on a scene. Remember this is Through the Looking Glass and NOT Alice in Wonderland. I’ve decided to re-write Chapter IX, “Queen Alice” (or in this case, “Queen Teeni”). Thank you Annie! This kind of took on it’s own life and wasn’t what I originally intended but I went with it Oh, and yeah, I dragged a few of my buddies into it with me just for fun. Strap on your seatbelts and have a fun little ride!

==============

I woke up this morning

With a crown on my head.

Don’t know how it stayed on

While I was in bed.

It was still there

Once the morning was whole.

Musta been put there cuz

I’m the Queen of Whack-A-Mole.

What was stranger still

And made the air a little thick,

Was that with me were Queen Red

And Queen WriterChick!

I don’t know how they got there

Was too afraid to ask.

It seemed as far as civilities

They really were quite lax.

The two queens tried to confound me,

It was certainly the pits!

But (yay for me) they weren’t properly

Armed for a battle of the wits!

I think they were up blogging

Too late the night before.

That became right obvious

When they each began to snore.

It happened just in time

As I couldn’t stand a minute more!

Relieved to escape their non-sensical tests,

I found myself before a door.

I couldn’t get it open

No matter how I cursed and vexed.

Then MacBros came to befuddle me

With his funny meta text.

It didn’t take him long to do and

Once that task was complete,

He managed to open the door

With one of his giant webbed feet.

I started to think this day had to be

Someone’s idea of a bad joke.

When oh no, dear me, and dangitall,

Both queens had awoke.

Those two queens, they hounded

And pressured me to attend

The very most curious of meals.

Would this day never end?

They introduced me to a talking mutton

Cuz I’d missed the course from the aquarium.

Outraged I spat, “I don’t eat food that speaks!

I’m a Vaguetarian!”

After my not-so-small

Etiquette faux pas,

WriterChick recited a poem

That left us all in awe.

Then I was pressed to make

A speech of something-or-other.

But I found all I could do

Was stand there and blubber.

Suddenly my head was spinning and

I felt more than a bit of the squeam.

But thankfully, I woke up to find

It had all been a crazy dream!

Great poem! I love “assignments”, it’s a challenge, moreso if someone gives them to you, or you have a deadline. I think it’s time for a meme tag again, I haven’t seen one in while… Maybe I’ll find a good one and pass it along…

Hi Paige! Thanks for stopping in - haven’t seen you for a bit! Hope all is well! Yes, I like the idea of writing assignments - keeps me more focused. Make it an easy meme! LOL. Oooh, I just thought of one. I’ll save that idea for later though. My little brain can only handle so much at once!

I love this! You did a great job!!

Thanks, Calamity! It was interesting to have to go back and read the real chapter first. That whole story still gives me a bit of the creeps.

    LOL Teeni!
This is fricking fantastic! You did great. And how clever of you to include so many of us in this little ditty. I’m very proud of you. I laughed all the way through it. Totally loving this.

    Love,
    Annie

    PS: A+++++++++++++++++++++

Oh, thanks so much Annie! That means the world to me! It’s fun to write but it is so much funner (love that word) when you can get others to enjoy it. Yayyyy!

OMG! You put a lot of time into this post. Like the Poem.
    Thanks for the linkage.

LOL. Thanks,MacBros! I knew I could use you because I knew you had a good sense of humor and could stand a little teasing! ;)

Wow MsTeeni .. this was GREAT!!!
That Annie is a slave-driver when it comes to assignments *I loves ya, Annie!* and you did maaah-velous with it! I laughed the whole way through, and was able to “see” it play out .. That’s when you know you’ve done something great .. when the reader can see it happening.
Mucho kudos to you!!!! Wellll done!

Thanks so much Red! I’m really glad you enjoyed it! I had to drag you into it since I actually came across Annie through you! Somehow I didn’t think you’d mind! ;)

Oh, and thanks for the mention! That was too funny.

Well, there was a Red Queen in the story so how could I not include you, my reddest of bloggy friends? ;)

    I didn’t know it ,
    you was a poet!

Very clever and funny. You’re the wordsmith. No wonder you your a Scrabulicious expert. ;)
HA! I stink at Scrabble but I love to play. I’m very good at very bad poems though. ;)

  8. Kami (321 comments.) on November 6th, 2007 4:54 pm

So great Teeni! You are talented :-)
Thanks, Kami!! LOL. Let me know if you ever need a bad poem! I’ll whip one up for ya! heehee.

WOW!! Talk about hidden talent - this is awesome!!! Love it! And what a neat idea about giving “assignments”, what a clever friend you have to think of doing that!

You know how much I love to write, so if you ever decide to hand out assignments of your own … well, you know I’d love to do one! :-) I actually loved homework as a school girl, too! LOL :-D
Thanks so much Hannah! I did have fun writing this and wish I hadn’t been so busy so I could do it sooner but hey - bad poetry like this takes time! LOL. I love that idea of assignments too and if Ms. WriterChick doesn’t mind I may borrow her idea or tweak it some too. I’d love to do an assignment swap with some of my fellow bloggers - that would be a lot of fun! Maybe you and I could work together on coming up with something like this to do. :)

OH I loved this.I loev to see other poets out there ;)
Yeup - not all poetry has to be sad. :)

you saying I write sad poetry?

No Kaylee, not just you - I’ve just noticed that poetry gets used more for sad things than for happy things. We should all change that. ;)

  11. teeni on November 6th, 2007 8:35 pm

NOTE: This comment was moved - through some strange glitch it ended up under a different post but I believe it belongs here. I don’t know what happened there Melsie but I moved it here for you!

Excellent job on that Teeni! I love how you got the vagueatarian part in there!! Glad it was only a dream. lol

Thank you Melsie! Yeup I had to fit the vaguetarian part in there somehow. LOL. I couldn’t think of much it rhymed with though. D’oh. Yes, thank goodness it was a dream. I find it hard to believe that the Looking Glass story is really meant for kids. It is freaky. LOL.

Yes,Thats very true.I like to write more happy poetry when I am in the right mood ;)

That’s a great poem. I’ve alway thought the writing projects were nice but I never participated yes perhaps one day I will when my schedule slows down.
I always thought MacBros had webbed feet definitely would explain the way he was weaving around in one of his videos. ;-)
LOL. Oh yes, good one! That would explain a lot! heehee.

  14. Hannah (382 comments.) on November 7th, 2007 6:45 pm

I think we could have a lot of fun collaborating on something together, Teeni! ;-)
I already have some ideas, I just need to throw some things around with you and see what we can come up with! I’ll talk to you in an email more in the next couple of days! ;)

  15. antibarbie on November 7th, 2007 11:10 pm

You did a great job with that fun little ditty! I really enjoyed it.

Thanks, AntiBarbie. I am glad you liked it. It’s not what I intended to write, but it took off on it’s own and I could only follow. **shrugs** ;)

  16. ariell (58 comments.) on November 8th, 2007 5:27 pm

sounds just like my thesis on Political Satire of Victorian England in Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass…just kidding :)
I love it (along with most things Alice).

Whew! You scared me there for a second, Ariell! LOL. I didn’t know you liked Alice stuff. Glad you enjoyed it! :)

    Hi Teeni,

That was incredible. I loved it - you have a wonderful imagination and I think I like this version better than the original!

Thank you, Kate! Me too - the original scares me! LOL. It was weird because I hadn’t intended to do this in a poem at all, but it just kept leaning that way while I was trying to write it so I couldn’t fight it anymore and this is what I ended up with. Weird how sometimes a project will almost get a life of its own! ;)

[…] My friend Teeni over at the Vaguetarian Tea Room recently completed an assignment. But not just any assignment. It was set by one of her readers, WriterChick, who asked Teeni to rewrite a scene from Alice Through the Looking Glass, but to put herself in the role of the star. She did a stellar job, blowing us away with her hidden poetry skills. You can read it here. […]
