Something Wicked Cool Is Here!

Hannah over at Blair’s Boys and I have been scheming up something fun to do for those of us who love writing but either:
- Don’t have the time to dedicate to NaNoWriMo,
- Don’t enjoy large writing projects, or, like me,
- Don’t have the attention span for something of that caliber.
I loved Annie at WriterChick Talks‘ writing assignments that she gave her buddies - what a great idea. She is a fabulous writer as are all her buddies who hang out there - please check them out if you are looking for a good read! Hannah and I would like to do something similar but rather than tailoring it for any one in particular, we’d like to open it to anyone who wants to participate and allow them to apply their own writing style to it.
So, here is generally how it works - Hannah will assign me a writing task and I will assign one to her. Anyone else who would like to join in can choose either the assignment that she gives me, or the one I give her, or if they really enjoy writing, they can certainly do both! But please, if you are going to participate, do take a copy of the awesome badge that Hannah designed (it’s amazing what she can come up with on the fly, that Hannah!) and link back to the assignment page that you chose. That way Hannah and I can enjoy the stories you came up with as well. And you deserve to have another badge for all your hard work. ![]()
The assignments will have a “loose” deadline of one month so as not to stress anyone out. The assignment is for a scene, a short story, or essay. You can also do a poem if you like. See how easy and flexible we are? The deadline is loose because some people need a deadline in order to accomplish things. Others are stressed by it. We don’t want anyone to have stress or impediments so the loose deadline hopefully helps in that area. We will try and do one of these every month. So this first writing assignment is “due” on December 14. Of course, we will always accept a late submission so don’t stress about it!
The details for this first challenge for you, Hannah, and for anyone else who accepts this writing assignment challenge, are as follows:
The Variety Show - The setting is a late-night sound stage in New York City, and I am your host, Teeni Frowney (haha - get the reference to Guy Smiley from Sesame Street fame?). I’ve just come back from commercial and am joking with my sidekick, TGH, and I am about to introduce your act…take it away! Hint: Please cover what your special talent/act is, what ensues, and the audience’s reaction to it all.
NOTE: Don’t forget to check out Hannah’s site and see if you’d like to join me in completing her assignment as well or instead of this one!
Also, another fun thing to try if you like this type of writing - go to AntiBarbie’s site and try to win a custom header! I’ll be competing in this one myself too! Speaking of which, I need to get to work!
No writer’s block around here, right? ![]()

[…] you’d like to tackle this assignment (or the one Teeni has set for me on her blog), post your finished masterpiece on your blog and link back to this post (or hers). Oh, and feel […]
Oh, I just LOVE your assignment - this will be fun!!
I hope mine is okay … I didn’t provide a scenario for you but I know you won’t have a problem thinking one up! And it may very well be dictated by the choice of “well-known character”.
I love your assignment - it will be fun! Thanks for including the sonnet. I think we all know by know that there is a really bad little poet living inside of me that likes to get out once in a while. This should appease her. LOL.
I was just checking your site in hopes you had this thing posted already, the anticipation and curiosity was killing me! And it was here! And I am soooo participating! Looks like I have some research to do on Spenserian sonnets, they’re not really my favourite, I’m more a Shakespeare kinda gal but this will be a good challenge.
Paige, I know it will be fun for me to read your work. I can’t wait!
Yikes! I’ve read both assignments and I think I’m gonna go with Teeni’s idea first. I’ll try that on and see how it goes.
That’s a great idea yall came up with. I know I enjoyed WC’s assignment, and will definitely enjoy yall’s too!
Oh, I know I’m gonna get some good stuff out of you! It’s so exciting - this is better than Christmas for me!
Ooooh, how fun is this? I’m gathering up my knitting now and running off in search of my notebook and pen. Still not decided which one I’ll go with yet.
Thanks for this girls
Yeup - change those needles into some pens (or pencils) and get to work! Oh, we are such slave-drivers! I’m really looking forward to reading yours, Diane!
sweet. i wanna play
You know I was hoping you would!!! I know you were disappointed about the NaNoWriMo, so just think of this as the OhNoMiJo - that’s the “Oh No, I’m not doing the nanowrimo, just this Miniature Job.”
Teeni, you are so funy! “OhNoMiJo” - we should totally call it that!
And yes, I included the sonnet because I know how much you enjoy writing poetry! I do too, actually!
Hehe. We can call it that if you like. I think we need another badge though!
That sounds great. I’m sure people will have a lot of fun with it.
Maybe sometime when things slow down for you, we can get a story out of you, Opal! That would be cool. I bet Aiyana would help you out too.
I want to so yours teeni…but do I have to do it today? I am still feeling the aftereffects(yeah I probably invented that word myself.LOL) of what I went through yesterday.
Nevermind I only read half the post the first time I guess
Yeah, no excuses - we left you plenty of time. LOL. Join in if you want to and are able, Kaylee. It should be fun.
I think I will just lurk.
Okay. You are allowed to lurk. Maybe sometime I’ll get you to join in.
Looks like fun, can’t wait to read yours and Hannah’s.
I am so busy right now I can’t even imagine trying it. Maybe I’ll come around….

Ahh, you just know we will pull you in one of these days, Kami!
Hi Teeni,
If I hadn’t joined The Created Wor(l)d, I’d have happily taken this on. Might I do it every now and then?
Laura’s comment made me laugh. I love the new acronym!
Oh, Kate of course you can join in every now and then. We don’t expect everyone to be able to participate all the time. You just join in whenever you can. I have a few ideas for the next couple of months already in mind. And yes, my friend Laura makes me laugh all the time. I just love her writing too - you should visit her blog sometime. I’m glad you like the new acronym. I enjoy making stuff like that up on the fly.
Now I just have to get Hannah to make a new badge that says “OhNoMiJo” instead of the “Live Poet’s Society.”
