I heard this on CNN and couldn’t believe it. It’s amazing the person survived through all the screwups.

Yes, it’s quite a surprising story. And very scary that it has happened so often lately. -Eeep!

Absolutely no call for stuff like that and when I saw the number $50,000.00 awarded, I almost choked. I’d want a *bit* more than that….sheesh!!

Hey, love to you and yours today and every day. Peace, love and understanding to you today and every day.

    ~ RS ~

I agree that I’d want a little more than that for messing with my head. Yikes.

[…] Check it out! While looking through the blogosphere we stumbled on an interesting post today. Here’s a quick excerptIt Aint What It Used to Be November 28, 2007 by teeni This makes the saying, “It’s not like it’s brain surgery,” suddenly lose all meaning. Posted in News Flash […]

The story is fairly local for us, so we got it on the news. Some woman they interviewed actually said “They’re human too. Everyone makes mistakes.”

The only time I was in pre-op with someone getting operated on something that could be either side, it went down like this:

Nurse: So what side are we operating on today?
Patient (scared): Isn’t it your job to know that?
Nurse: We know, just making sure you agree, so there is no mistake.

The patient responded and the nurse proceeded to put a big X on the side with a magic marker. We thought it was odd at first, but it was actually reassuring. Hospitals need some checks and balances to make sure this stuff doesn’t happen.

    YIKES!

And one my babies has to go for eye surgery… think they’ll put a big X on the one that needs to be operated on?

I do hope not but then again, I would like to make sure they don’t mess up his good eye :-)
Oh, Kami - I didn’t know about the surgery! I thought that was all still up in the air for you guys. When is it scheduled? I will have you all in my thoughts and prayers. The patient TGH was talking about in the above comment was me. At first when they asked me what side, I was terrified that they didn’t know what they were doing but then it made sense that they were just making sure we all agreed what side was being operated on and I got to mark it so that I could rest assured. It actually did make me feel better in the long run.

This is just crazy…I don’t understand how they could make these mistakes. Though I remember a Mr. Bean episode when he inadvertently knocked out his dentist and proceeded to fix his own teeth and there were x-rays in front of him that he flipped over wondering if he got the right tooth. The order started getting mixed up more and more and so he ended up fixing everyone of his teeth. lol

Ok, but are these surgeons Mr. Bean??

OMG! I love Mr. Bean! And no, these surgeons aren’t Mr. Bean. I can understand human mistakes once in a while but these three happened within a relatively small timeframe and at the same hospital. The simple task of checking with the patient before surgery may seem silly but it may be the easiest way to prevent a mistake. It can’t hurt to double check or triple check these things before something so serious as surgery - ANY kind of surgery, brain or otherwise. Nobody is above human imperfection, not even brain surgeons, and the good ones know that.

Ah yes, I saw this on ‘Good Morning America’ on ABC this morning, and it’s quite frightening that these “wrong surgeries” are happening so frequently (or at all, for that matter).

Hi VeggieGirl! Yes, it really is frightening. I’m sure they will put some practices into procedure that will prevent this type of thing in the future but it is too bad it happened as often as it did so recently. I hope so anyway.

    eeks! that is so scary!

Wow. I must have scared you out of the woodwork! LOL. Welcome to the Vaguetarian Tea Room, Cowgal! Hopefully you will not be a stranger in the future - not all my posts are so scary. Just so you know. ;)

OKAY that is very crazy……I just wonder why this had to happen three times before they finally starting reassuring the side they were operating on better?

  11. cowgalutah (14 comments.) on November 28th, 2007 7:51 pm

oh good cause I’m a fraidy cat! but it looks nice here, I’ll be adding you to the blogroll

OMG! They are reevaluating their methods and training? Nobody is going to jail or getting fired? What are they, politicians? Cripes. Sounds like these doctors had the wrong side of their brains trained.
    WC

I guess that is where you must get credit for the years spent in school? I don’t know. I don’t get it either. The only thing I can say in their favor is it wasn’t the same doctor each time.

  13. Kami (270 comments.) on November 28th, 2007 11:31 pm

Sugery isn’t yet scheduled but we saw our doctor today and she basically said she would do it if we weren’t comfortable with Dr “I have not idea what I am doing”. She is fine with actually doing the surgery but now with how much to correct… so the surgery will happen eventually…..

I am glad there was no mistake with you! And by the way… is there another post about brain surgery that you will share?

    HUGS!

  14. Kami (270 comments.) on November 28th, 2007 11:32 pm

Um yeah, nevermind… now I know what TGH was talking about.. not the brain… a little south.

I get it eventually. I am just slow.
    :-)
LOL. Oh, Kami - that is why I love you - I usually go that very same speed. I’m glad I’m not all alone. :)

Just came back from your blog and now I know why your “L” was doing all the double-duty in your comment. LOL. Or, should I say, LLOLL?

  17. Red (143 comments.) on November 29th, 2007 4:53 pm

Oh that is too crazy . . and only 50,000. Pah-leaseeee!

Yeah, for some reason that just doesn’t seem like a lot when messing with someone’s head. Is it me or do I remember somebody suing a fast food franchise for millions over spilled hot coffee?? Seems to me a brain is a mite more important that a pantsuit!

  18. lynsuk on November 29th, 2007 5:06 pm

Eak. How scary…and all in the same hospital?
People put their *lives* in these people’s hands, they could at least double check, triple check even!!
    *shakes head and sighs*

Yes, same hospital - different doctors though. But scary no matter what!

  19. Talina (78 comments.) on November 29th, 2007 11:46 pm
