Human Hibernation

Posted on December 17, 2007 - Filed Under Got Me Thinking, Tangents

Shouldn’t humans hibernate in winter? Seems to me they should. At least in my neck of the woods. Let’s think about it, shall we?

Winter is cold. Humans can get frostbite from the cold. So maybe we shouldn’t be out in it. Sure, we could wear coats, but that’s just not natural, is it? ;)
Driving is dangerous in inclement weather and there is generally more inclement weather in the winter. Maybe we should gather a bunch of food in fall and just stay inside for the following season.

Nothing really grows in the winter around where I live. Maybe we shouldn’t be eating so much in winter. We could live with eating less if we were sleeping more.

Tiny birds survive the winter because their hearts beat so fast that they stay warm. Our hearts only beat fast like that when we are out there shoveling snow…which we wouldn’t be doing if we were inside sleeping right?

Bears have really thick fur and THEY hibernate. What does that tell you? We don’t even have the thick fur so we should definitely stay inside and hibernate! I’ve decided this winter I’m hibernating!

So hands off my chocolate chips that I’ve stored up to tide me over for the winter. I’m all for giving up shaving my legs too! Maybe the extra hair will keep me warm during hibernation! :)

I don’t want to sleep more. I’d like to be able to sleep less so that I would have more time to do the things I want to do. Now maybe if there was a trade off that by hibernating in the winter I could sleep less in the rest of the year. That might make it worth while. ;)
OOOOh - I like that idea too! Good one, Mike - you are always thinking! I would definitely go for that trade off!

But who will make the snowmen?

Oh, let’s leave that for the Sasquatches, unless they hibernate too. ;)

Yes definitely!! I’m all for hibernation - I do an amazing amount of it during the winter already - but I’d like to do more.

Brrr…. even the squirrels hibernate. I think we should too … especially when it snows and snows and snows and snows and snows and snows …

LOL. I get the feeling it’s pretty white where you are about now, huh Kate? Please stay warm and safe! Yes, let’s do like the squirrels do!

    Hey Teens,
I think maybe you’ve stumbled upon a new diet. The hibernation diet. We can just sleep and live off our cellulite til Spring. Heck, we won’t even need homes, just storage locker with a heater. ;) Annie

LOL. Yeah, and you know, when we emerge in the Spring we’d be all like bikini-ready and everything! Sounds good, no? ;)

Heck yes! This post sure did make me sleeeeeepy!
And Im all for nixing the shaving routine in the winter. I only do it when the Mister starts to complain about my “ichy legs”.

LOL. TGH only complains when I kick him. It’s not on purpose - it’s muscle spasms or something. And it doesn’t happen that often, no matter what he tells you. ;)

Now aside from the fact that i would miss all my pretty snow walks, I like this idea! Maybe I would wake up and my stomach wouldnt hurt!!! LOL

Well, you still might get to see some early snow before we get to hibernating. And yes, I would hope your tummy wouldn’t hurt.

Teeni, this is the best idea you have had yet. I am going to bed now, see you in the spring.
    ;-)
and I am taking my Nanaimo bars with me…..

LOL. I may want some of those. Trade ya some allergen free chocolate chips? ;)

This is the best plan ever, but is it SO difficult for me to drool at the thought of hibernating right now, when I have to get up at 5:30am tomorrow…..ohhhh goodness… ;-)
Yuck. Sorry you have to get up so early Romi! Well, hopefully soon you’ll have a couple days off for the holidays and you can get to hibernate on those days! :) Oh, and welcome to the Vaguetarian Tea Room - glad to see you here!

    eek another GREAT idea!!!
    YES hibernation makes perfect sense!
We practically do here anyway.. we go to bed early and don’t go out much during days off unless errands call.
    Yum Nanaimo bars…
YES about not shaving legs!!! LOL!
H doesn’t mind but I notice when I swim that it slows me down a bit(lol!)
LOL writer chick, at living off our cellulite until spring.. :D :D!

I’m glad you liked the idea Merri. Somehow I knew I wouldn’t be alone on this one. Kami posted a recipe for those Nanaimo bars so you know I’m gonna try making them soon - you know, to stock up for the winter sleep. LOL. I’ve actually heard that die-hard swimmers do shave their entire bodies! Sounds strange but they swear it works. I didn’t realize you were into swimming. That is neat and great exercise!

It is a possibility - check out this link from the British Medical Journal.

Think I’d choose something tastier than hard stale bread and water though…. I hate never seeing daylight in the winter - sleep sounds like a much better option, perhaps astral projection in which I could go to the Bahamas whilst sleeping would be even better. :)
Wow - that is very interesting, Phil. I’m with you about the bread and water and I do miss the sunshine. Astral projection sounds good too. I knew there had to be better ways to deal with winter. LOL.
