The Good Household Tip Meme

Posted on January 20, 2008 - Filed Under Meme, Teeni's Tips

I have been tagged for a meme by Witchypoo! This is a neat little meme that she made up and it is all about household tips. Who can’t use more of those, right? I already know I’m going to be using the citrus one she posted about to keep my cats in line and teach them the cat-free zones.

Instructions for this meme:

Write your tip(s) with a link to who sent the meme to you, along with the instructions. They are better if they are your own discovery, or not widely known. Still, tips that make a difference to you are all good. After your tips, you will want to tag some friends.

Okay - I sort of cheated and I’ve copied and pasted a tip or two from my series of Teeni’s Tips, below. Witchypoo had no idea I had these little gems stored away when she tagged me for this meme. LOL. These tips were originally written as a fun way to give pointers to my many nieces and nephews (to save them money or time from having to repeat the same mistakes we grownups have made). For some reason, I like pretending I’m a little old lady already when I write these to the kids, so forgive the odd writing style. If you are relatively new here and would like to see more - then search on the Tea Room Subject box for Teeni’s Tips. Enjoy!

1. Ah my dear nieces and nephews - this one may come in handy for you in the future when you have to take your decrepit old aunt out shopping…If you go food shopping with someone else whether it be a mom, a sister, or a wonderfully sweet, intelligent, tall, thin, and beautiful aunt it can sometimes get hairy when the bags get loaded into the car. Which bags belong to who? How do I make sure auntie doesn’t make off with my coveted Oreos, you may ask yourself?

Well, I’m happy to tell you that these situations can easily be avoided. If one of you simply ties the handles of her bags together as you retrieve them from the bag-person and load them into your cart, then it is easy to tell that them apart! Or one of you could choose paper bags and the other choose plastic. Or even better, bring your own bags! Now you kids remember that because I’ll probably forget as my failing memory deteriorates! And I don’t need YOU taking home MY denture cream by accident! ;)

2. Another tip for my dear nieces and nephews:
Keep a permanent marker close to the fridge in the kitchen. Whenever you open a new container of milk, OJ, etc., just mark the date on it. Then you’ll always know whether it’s fresh or time to toss it out on trash day. My memory isn’t so sharp and this has helped me on numerous occasions, especially with aseptic packaging (you know, the packaging that lets things like milk and juice sit on a shelf without refrigeration until it’s been opened). Although foods packed that way last a lot longer on the shelf, you still need to use them in a short amount of time once they’ve been opened before they spoil - and with all the other things going on in life, who can keep track of that? So, marking the containers with a date as soon as you open it really saves a lot of brain-ache and waste. Besides, who wants to pour out some milk only to find that it’s gone chunky? Deeeesgusting!

3. Again, for my beloved nieces and nephews, below are some more words of wisdom from your crazy aunt.At the end of the week if you’ve got a lot of little containers of produce leftover in your fridge, throw together an “everything-but-the-kitchen-sink pizza” by making a dough and throwing all the produce on there. Or you can buy the dough - pizza dough is quite cheap at the grocery store. You use up some leftovers in a delicious way and you save money! That’s always cool.

Because I’m very interested in what they can teach me in the way of any household tips - I would like to tag the following people - please take your time with this and have fun if you can participate.

Some great tips there, Teeni! I don’t think I’d read all of them before so it was good to be reminded ;-)
Thanks for tagging me, too. I will put my thinking cap and on and hopefully get to this before we head off on holiday! :-)
Oops - no stress, Hannah. If you can great - but otherwise I hope you have a wonderful holiday no matter what! :)

GREAT TIPS! I loved this meeme :)
Thanks - all the credit goes to Witchypoo for coming up with it! :)

Great tips, as always, Auntie Teeni. I especially like the pizza one .. with addition to the produce, maybe leftovers? If you’re a *whispers* meat eater, turkey or chicken on pizza is incredibly yummy.

Oh sure, leftovers would be delicious on a pizza and maybe even more apt to be eaten and not wasted! Good idea! LOL. No need to whisper - it’s your pizza, your toppings. I’m not ashamed of my friends or what they eat, whether it is veggie or meaty. And that is the level of respect I’d like to maintain at the Tea Room. So have at it, my dear! Hugs to you!

Those are great and the pizza thing, I love that! We do that quite often and those are usually the best pizzas. It is almost impossible to duplicate them though, each one is it’s own unique work of art :-)
You said it, Kami - that is exactly the way it is! And I haven’t had a “bad” one yet!

Oh man I think I’ve got some gooders! LOVE your new Meez doll!

I figured you’d have some good ones, Paige. :D I’m looking forward to them - no rush though.

And thanks about the Meez - I try to change her with every current post. She is trying to demonstrate a safety tip as you see here - do NOT grill in the house - especially my messy kitchen! Hopefully she gets the point across. But I think it would be better if they let me show her on fire. LOL.

IS that Meez doll of yours grilling? LOL I love that one thats my favorite so far ;)
Yes, she’s grilling in the messy kitchen, wearing a firefighting outfit just in case. LOL. I did her this way in honor of our household tips! :)

i am brainstorming right now. the citrus oil idea sounds great. Rupert likes to counter surf so maybe this will deter him and who doesn’t like the scent of oranges (except cats)??

i absolutely love Pizza. i think of it more than just in the sense of pizza hut or dominos. you can get fresh pizza dough at your local grocer for about $1.50. i definitely do the “let’s throw everything in the fridge onto the pizza” thing. yummy.

    some ideas coming soon.

You are so right about the citrus - it makes the house smell clean and hey if it helps curb my kitties bad habits then it is a great tip and that is one I will keep using. Homemade pizza is the best, in my opinion - pizza places are okay once in a while but man, I just love to dig into homemade pizza. Of course I love to load mine up with stuff so that is probably why. No limits - LOL. I actually usually have like two inches high worth of veggies on there to 1/2 high of dough. It doesn’t always balance well, but it can be eaten with a fork and knife! :D
Oh, I know you’ll have some good tips! No pressure though, okay? School comes first!

  8. kaylee2 (132 comments.) on January 21st, 2008 5:57 pm

well I think I got her point at least the second time ;)

Just letting you know that I have done my meme! :-)
Oh, I’m late to this comment but I already commented over at your site! LOL. :D

Why not just have one tie a double knot and the other a loop-de-loop? Ok, I made that up. I think if I tied all my bags together I would not be able to lift them.

    You crack me up!

Hi there teeni - thanks for electing me to join in with this Household Tip meme….. will have to put thinking cap on…

Re cats and using citrus this raised a memory that made me smile. When we had our first cat as a married couple. My first cat that I was responsible for housetraining. As soon as he was big enough he used to jump up on to the kitchen work surface. I wasn’t having that. I liberally sprinkled powder pepper all over the work surface and then hid behind the door to watch. Up jumped Tabby >>> sniff, sniff, sniff - NO Reaction??!! He just jumped down again in his own good time. I sneezed a lot just trying to clear it up … I can’t remember now how I cured him of this habit but I did in the end. 8-) x

LOL. Penny it sounds like that plan really backfired! I’m glad you got that habit curbed in the end though. I remember I trained my old cat so that eventually whenever I clapped my hands together she knew she was doing something wrong and would stop or would get down from wherever she was. Of course, she was also super intelligent and the best cat ever so that didn’t hurt either. ;)

Oh, Susan - take your time - I never want to pressure anyone with these things. I can’t commit for the opening yet but I am hoping we can make it. I definitely would love to get together with you and Rainer again!

Oooh, I like the pizza idea and tying the handles together is brilliant! I might have to steal this meme even though you didn’t tag me. You really are the meme queen Teens. ;) Annie

LOL. Oh, Annie - it really IS a good meme, isn’t it? I can’t take credit though - Witchypoo is the one who thought this one up. I love it though because it spreads some good ideas to your buddies. :)

Am I the ONLY guy commenting on this post?! Well ladies, stand back ’cause I have a doozy of a tip right here…

    Um… Hm…
    Oh yeah! No…

Ok, I got nothing. Maybe that’s why no guy has commented on this one. Oh hey - How about this!…

“Cleaning up your George Forman Lean Mean Fat Reducing Machine can get kinda nasty if you wait till after you eat your burgers after everything cakes on so as soon as you’re done cooking, dump the draining tray out and then it’s nothing more than a quick spray and wipe!” Of course the grill part can be a different story…

LOL. Bush, you are a riot! It’s good to see you here. Finally a fearless man pipes up in the post! It is true about cleaning those machines though - better to get to them sooner than later! If you come up with any others you are more than welcome to add to the household tips! Hope you are doing well, buddy.

oh that pizza is soooo not happening for me!

Why not? You’re not afraid of a little pizza are you? ;)

  17. kate smudges (32 comments.) on January 24th, 2008 10:29 pm

Those were good tips - I wish I’d heard the tying-the-plastic-bags tip ages ago. That would have saved many a mistaken bag when I shopped with a friend.

The pizza tip was good too …

Thank you Kate. I hope the tips can help people. I used the bag tying one again today while out at the store with my Mother in Law.
