Hey That’s My Fish! and a Story Game

Posted on January 31, 2008 - Filed Under Games, Reviews

Yes, that’s an unusual title for a blog post but that is because it is the name of the game I wanted to tell you about. Yes, it’s called, “Hey, That’s My Fish!” This game is really simple and quick to learn but does require a bit of strategy to win. It plays in about 15-20 minutes and has quickly become one of my favorites.

In lieu of an actual board, this game uses tiles that represent ice floes. The ice floes each have either 1, 2, or 3 fish on them. Players start their penguins on ice floes that only have one fish. As each player takes a turn, they get to move in any direction and stop on any tile in that path. Each time they move, they collect the ice floe that the penguin started on. This eventually leaves some penguins stranded and makes the game different each time. The player who has collected the most fish wins the game.

The game is made by Phalanx games and is a really well made board game. The ice floes are made of very heavy cardstock. The penguins are made of wood. Even the box is some pretty sturdy fare and should last for many, many years.

The age recommendation for Hey That’s My Fish is 8 years and up. I think that children as young as six or seven may be able to play it. They will catch on pretty quickly. I give it a six out of seven stars.

Now, speaking of games, it’s time to start another story game so if you’d like to join in then please leave a comment using a valid email address to let me know and I’ll get it started. The last story game ended up like this. You never know what you’re going to get, so who wants in?

    Yes, please.
And the very best board game for kids IMHO, is Monopoly Junior. Fast, and everyone gets a turn to win.

Adding you to the story game and I haven’t ever played Monopoly Junior (believe it or not with all my nieces and nephews) but that sounds good - I like that everyone gets to win. That may be the only time I ever get to win! LOL. :)

Sounds like a neat game .. it made me laugh though cuz I have a penguin dance that I do and well . . yeah, TMI.
I’m up for the story game, of course!

LOL. Your penguin dance sounds interesting. Hmmm. But okay, some things are better left behind closed doors. LOL. I’m including you in the story game! :)

where can one go to find this game? Is it in Toys R Us or Target?

Hi Mark! :) Actually I found this game in a kiosk at the mall around christmas time but since then I have seen it online - Amazon may have it as well as other online board game stores. I also have found good games at Barnes & Noble - they have a lot of them around the holidays and I’ve found a lot of better games (and better made games) that way than I have at places like Toys ‘R’ Us. Toys ‘R’ Us is great for the mainstream games but I like to try new ones (plus, I already have most of the mainstream ones in my collection). Would you like to join in the story game, Mark? You’re only obligation is to add approximately 2-1/2 lines to an ongoing story.

    Hi there,

Was it you who left that nice comment on my blog? Your name wasn’t linked but I think this is you. If not - then I will sound crazy! If it was you - then thank you!

The game looks good - our favourite game here is Coppit. Have you heard of that?

your story game sounds a lot of fun. It would be horribly forward of me to try to gate crash when I have never been here before - but well. . . I would like to!!!

Anyway, it’s snowing here so I am going to gaze out on a winter wonderland whilst it lasts!

Oops - Yes, that was me. I’m sorry it wasn’t linked. I always forget about that. But so glad you found me! And no, it is not forward at all to join in the game! Would be happy to have you!!! I will email you when it is your turn! I’ve never heard of Coppit and will now have to do some homework. Thanks for the info! Enjoy your winter wonderland! :)

    Teeni:

I’m in! I think this is a fantastic and really creative idea. I’m thinking of doing something similar but with a poem.

    Chanya

That sounds like fun too. I always try to mix things up here at the tea room, so you are always welcome to join when you want. And I definitely am interested in your poem game.

[…] Update: Apparently, I have a need to keep proving how human I am to you all. It appears I missed a few people in this round of the story game. I can only think that what happened was I was keeping a running list of people to send it to in a Word document but then forgot to go back to the original post and add the newest names that signed up to participate, so my apologies to everyone on that. To make it right, what better thing to do than to start a new story game, including the people I missed first and I’ll include the rest of the people who signed up for that last one as well. Hope everyone is okay with that. Besdies, I am all curious as to what happens to Marie next! :)  For those of you who missed it, the original “signup” post for the game was here. […]
