How We Got Jam

Posted on February 25, 2008 - Filed Under Cat

Jam in snow

This is Jam. She was a stray that I found one night driving to my mom’s house when I was staying there. From the looks of her (back then anyway), she was about six months old or so. Also, from the looks of her, she survived on insects that she caught in mid-air between her two front paws, in addition to any other little furry creatures she was lucky enough to track down.

I found her accidentally when I almost hit her with my car. She darted out into the road from nowhere, it seemed. My first thought was, “Oh, cute little bunny,” until the bunny proceeded all the way across the road and half way up a tree on the other side. Last time I checked, bunnies don’t climb trees, so I concluded that it was NOT a bunny at all, but a little cat.

I got out of the car and went to the base of the tree and called to her, thinking, “What am I doing? She’ll never come to me. She’s probably terrified of humans.” Well, she came right over to me and I saw how thin she was and how willing she was to overcome fear to see if I had any food. So I scooped her up and put her in my car where she immediately curled up on the passenger seat and fell asleep, purring away. It’s as though she could tell that I wasn’t going to harm her and that she was safe. Weird.

I brought her to my mom’s house and she immediately let the male cat who lives there know that his advances would not be tolerated. She did this by running past him and giving him the quickest 1-2-3 punch I’ve ever seen as she flew by. She did this repeatedly and even drew blood, while poor Sammy just sat there, taking it all in. Poor old Sammy.

I let her feel the place out on her own while I visited with my family. That night before bed I went looking for the new cat to put her in my room, where she’d be safe during the night, but I couldn’t find her. I looked all over the house and then it hit me. I went to my room and there she already was - on my pillow all curled up, sleeping without a care in the world - again, as if she knew it was my room and my pillow (my scent, maybe?) and that it was a safe place.

She’s had a “safe” place with me ever since. Well, she’s been safe except from Toast, maybe. But that is another story altogether.

She really is beautiful. And it seems like you were meant for one another.

Aw, thanks Witchypoo! She can be such a little dear. She can also be very trying at times but all in all, I’m glad I found her and that we have been able to give her a life without worrying where her next meal is coming from. They all have their own little purrsonalities - each is different and I love them all.

You were obviously her knight (knightess??) in shining armour and she is lucky that you found her that day.
She looks very “at home” sitting at the computer! :-)
Thanks, Hannah - she likes to blog sometimes. :D

Cute story. I have a good cat story too…or maybe two of them. ;)
    You should definitely post them!

Awww how sweet you are. Gorgeous kitty….guess you are kindred spirits :)
Heehee. Yeah, but her whiskers are more unruly than mine!

    Awww. Hi, Jam!

I have to restrain myself from posting about my “kids” too much because I know I’d be considered the crazy old cat lady in no time. :)

she is beautiful! What a wonderful story too! I am learning through my own that cats are very special little furballs! (((Hugs to you and to Jam!

Aww, thanks, Calamity! You are right - they are very special! :)

What a pretty girl she is and how fantastic is that story? It’s like you both just knew that you should be friends. I mean, what are the odds that you would stop and go after her?

    Karma that is!

But how did she end up with the name Jam? That’s gotta be another good story ;-)
Thanks, Kami! Heehee - her name is Jam because I love food and I love my pets so I always think they should be named after food! I went through all the normal names like Fluffy, Snowball, Tiger, etc. when I was a kid and we’ve always had pets so the food names are good because I haven’t run out of them yet.

Aw sooo cute! I have an off topic question - for your search terms did you have to set up some kind of widget or does Wordpress do it for you? I just can’t figure this out!

Oh, Paige - WordPress automatically shows you the search terms used to find your site each day - I pull out the ones I like and copy and paste them into a draft post until I have enough to post them. I don’t know how you would find them in blogspot, but there has to be a way. I know the diva has done the search term posts so she might be able to help you with that more. Or if any of my other readers know the answer - could you please post a comment here for all of us to see? I’d appreciate it.

The odds Teeni would stop and go after her? 100% When I met her, she had 2 strays living with her. In the 11 years I’ve known her, she has brought home 1 on the road (Jam), 2 strays hanging out by her work (to sleep over until they had a permanent place to stay), and she has stopped while driving or walking to make sure a skinny cat looked like it had a home (collar, etc.). I’m sure we’d have more than the two if our cats were friendly to other cats.

    It’s true. We would. :)

I figured it out! I signed up for some statcounter.com thing and I already had everything set up I just didn’t know it! Thanks anyway, sorry to bug you!

Hopefully soon I’ll have some good search terms to post…

You are never a bother! :) I just wish I could have been more of a help, but I’m glad you found your search terms! I’m looking forward to seeing what you get over there at Eat, Bitch, and Whine!

It’s so great that you took her in!! We acquired a cat in a similar way…

Yours has great color and looks very taken care of, lucky kitty! Is she an outside cat?

Hi Talina! Thank you - she is a pretty little girl. She USED to go outdoors for the first few years I had her but then I decided to keep her and Toast indoors. They adjusted pretty well although we now have to make an effort to play with them more so they get some exercise and stuff.

Actually that top photo is one of her when we recently let her outside after being inside for two years. We stayed right with her and brought her back in after a bit. I do think that is one thing she misses - playing in the snow. She used to chase snowballs when we threw them for her outside. And she’d try and catch the snow falling out of the sky. All the cats I’ve ever had have had funny little personalities - you just have to be observant and interact with them. :)

Very cool. She looks a lot like our cat Callie. I cannot believe she came to you from up in a tree. It was meant to be!

Oooh - Lumpy you will need to post some Callie pics for me! Jam is sitting right behind me, on MY chair, as I type this! LOL

Oh, how lucky is she to have found you! And what a cutie, too. :)
Thank you, Hannah! I know I’m slightly biased, but I do think she is cute! :)

Jam is super cute - and like you and i - Jam and Cinda could be long lost sisters or cousins or something.

i’m so happy that she was able to find a safe home with you… i dont’ know what my life would be like without those fuzzy little furballs in it.

Yeah, life just wouldn’t be the same without them! Glad to see you out and about today, buddy! :)

What a great story! How lucky is she that you found her, and you should give yourself a pat on the back because you just saved her life!

Thank you, Baby Advice. She does “reward” me every day!

    Hi Teeni!
I love this story of how you got Jam. She must have known that it was your room and that she would be loved by you. She sounds very smart and it looks like she’s a good work buddy.
Your computer table is so tidy! Thank you for sharing your workspace with us!

Thanks, Heather! She’s a good work buddy and the table is tidy only cuz I’m not there! LOL
