Teeni Sees Horton Hears a Who and Says Hmmm

Posted on March 29, 2008 - Filed Under Got Me Thinking, Movies, Reviews

TGH and I took my great niece to see this last week. She seemed to enjoy it, especially the part where the evil bird crashes into the side of a cliff and says, “Right in the beak.” Later, we found that one of our nieces also saw the movie and that was the first thing she quoted from it as well. I’m glad they enjoyed it.

As for me, I’m not sure if I’m just old and jaded now or what. I have not really been thrilled with a lot of things on television or coming out of Hollywood lately. Horton Hears a Who wasn’t necessarily a bad movie in my opinion. It was just so-so. I wanted to like it more. TGH and I did laugh at one section which was a parodied anime-type cartoon illustrating how Horton would protect the speck that contained Who-ville. But I actually felt that the talents of the voice actors - Steve Carell, Jim Carrey, and Carol Burnett were just wasted in this animated feature.

I guess that “right in the beak,” comment was probably new to most of the kids seeing the movie, but I know that it, or reasonable facsimiles of it, have been used often in the past. Everything lately seems to be remakes or recycled stories with different characters/newer actors. However, kids’ movies like The Incredibles and Finding Nemo were both very enjoyable and refreshing to me even though Finding Nemo was a slightly different twist on a familiar Disney theme of young main character being separated from a parent. I guess those last two just had more new and refreshing ideas in them. So I guess I would say that Horton Hears a Who is an okay movie for those 8 and younger but didn’t offer much for the parents accompanying the kids.

Another thing that disturbed me while at the theater was getting popcorn. We hardly ever get popcorn at the theater because it is so expensive. But since we had my great-niece with us and we wanted her to have the “whole experience,” we did end up buying some. The girl serving us asked if we wanted butter and I said yes. But then I started thinking about it. Is that stuff that they dispense out of those machines really butter? I asked the girl working the concession stand if it was real butter and she wasn’t sure but said she didn’t really think so. This bothers me on a lot of levels. First, this is not something that has the ingredients listed on it where a customer can see if they have any aversions/allergies to it since it is applied behind the counter to the popcorn. Second, how can they offer it to you as butter if it really isn’t? It seems asking me if I want butter on my popcorn but putting something else on there is deceitful and false advertising. And if you are one to frequent the movies often with your children, it might be good/important to know what is in there, especially in this day and age with food allergies being so common. This link shows just a few buttery popcorn toppings - some are oil based with “special” flavorings. Hmmmm.

Hmmm … was wondering about taking the boys to this movie when it comes out here (which will probably be ages!) so thanks for the review. It is always good to know what other adults think of kid movies before venturing to see them.

Have you seen Alvin & The Chipmunks? Now there’s a great movie!

Yikes, the buttery popcorn thing is disturbing!! I’ve never been given the option of having popcorn without butter, but if it’s a “optional extra” you would think the staff would actually know if it was real or not! And if definitely SHOULD be real! Like you say, how can you offer “butter” when it’s not really “butter”??

I have not seen Alvin & the Chipmunks yet! I’m glad to hear it is one you liked - I remember watching Alvin & the Chipmunk cartoons growing up and having some of their records. (Of course you could make ANY record sound like them if you just turned up the speed on the record-player) LOL. Yeah, that butter thing really scares me. The next time I go, I’m definitely asking to see the ingredients.

I’m the BUTTER FLAVA QUEEN TEEN…. I don’t care what it is, I want it, in mass quantities on my popcorn. I get my bag of popcorn filled half way - I go “butter flava” and salt it, then go back to the counter where they fill remainder of the bag with more popcorn. I head back to the FAKE BUTTER dispenser and lube it all up. I go to the theatre JUST FOR THE popcorn. I don’t give a fig WHAT movie is playing, I just go for the popcorn. They should have a drive-thru :)
Oh, and don’t forget the ride home, *hovering over steering wheel in agonizing pain* “Why did I eat so much popcorn!???

    It’s a ritual.

I do want to see Horton, but now that my kids are older, I generally wait until it comes out on DVD.

Heehee. Hey Lumpy, I love the flavor of that stuff too. I just want to know what I’m putting in my body these days. If it is just you, then I ‘d recommend waiting for the DVD for Horton. But see? That is actually the selfish reason why I sometimes borrow my great niece for the movies! Then I can see one of the kids movies without feeling like some weirdo. LOL

I used to enjoy the drive in much more. You can bring your own darned popcorn, and they don’t go all nazi on you.

Oh, this just makes me want to cry. So many of the drive-in movie theaters around us are now closed - the closest ones are too far away for us to go because it would be too late to drive home after seeing the movies. But I used to absolutely adore the drive-ins! :( **starts chanting** Bring back the drive-ins! Bring back the drive-ins! Bring back the drive-ins!

I have always been skeptical of the “butter” at movie theatres. I rarely get popcorn there either and I think that rule of thumb will remain.

I was hoping that would be a good movie, we’ll wait for the video!
    :-)
I hate being the bearer of bad news, but yeah, I wouldn’t rush out to see this one.

I always liked butter on my popcorn but I can eat it with just salt too.

I’m a HUGE Dr Seuss fan, but I detest Jim Carrey, so I’m in a dilemma :0) I wish they had done Horton Hatches the Egg instead!

Thanks for the review Teeni, I have to confess to loving that movie popcorn, whatever is in it :)
I don’t like Jim Carrey much either, to be honest. And I certainly don’t know why they would have wanted to pay his salary for this movie. **shrugs**

I am not a cartoon person but was a good mother and took my kids to see a lot of them when they were little. I always brought our own snacks, hidden in my big pocketbook. One theater near us was privately owned and didn’t serve the same regular crap you get at all the other theaters. It served GORP (Good Old Raisins and Peanuts), hot chocolate, tea, and apple cider. We loved that theater.

I still bring my own minibag of 94% fat free popcorn stuffed in my bag with a bottle of water.

I’m all for drive in theaters. My daughter saw Star Wars back in 1979 when she was 6 months old at the drive-in. It’s still her favorite movie. We have one drive in theater left on Cape Cod in Wellfleet which is open in the summer. I have yet to go but my kids have gone. Wellfleet is a good hour from where we are in Falmouth.

I like sneaking stuff in too! ;) One time at the theater I even snuck in a small lapsize blanket to throw over myself because in the summer the air conditioning is too much for me. LOL. I should do a post on what the best snacks are to sneak into a theater. And which are the healthiest, etc.

Bethy Hears A Boooooo… I am not going to watch this movie…I like the old one. :)
Butter on popcorn..only the real stuff…

I would definitely rather have the real butter. I prefer cruelty-free, of course. But at least I can pronounce what I’m consuming.

I usually love a good kids movie, but I don’t like lameness that doesn’t make me laugh…the last good kids movie I saw was Shrek 2 (hated Shrek 3)…oh, and actually….did you see the Bee Movie? That was actually pretty entertaining :-)
Hi Romi! No, I haven’t seen the bee movie but if you liked it, I’d probably like it too. I will keep my eyes open for it. I like to watch good kids movies too. I loved Toy Story and Toy Story 2 made me cry when that stupid cowgirl doll sang her song. Sheesh. LOL

I actually like the greasy topping. Topping is what they call it here, they don’t say butter.

I didn’t care much for the movie either.

Well, at least they are being honest by calling it topping. I’m glad I wasn’t the only one who didn’t like it. Thanks, buddy!
