Live Poet’s Society Completed Assignment

Posted on March 30, 2008 - Filed Under Live Poet's Society, OhNoMiJo

I’ve finally completed my latest writing assignment from Hannah. My instructions were as follows:

Open your dictionary at random, close your eyes, and put your finger on the page. Write down the word closest to your finger. Repeat this step 5 times, until you have a list of 6 words. Now shape your list of words into a poem. Obviously you will need to add other words as well, but you must use all 6 on your list. No cheating or “exchanging” words! ;-) *If you are up for an extra challenge, make the poem a sestina.

I picked my words and posted them here. I have to admit that I was not up to the sestina challenge portion of this assignment THIS time, but at least now I know what a sestina is! :D

Our buddy, Red, rose to Hannah’s poem challenge as well. Here is her completed assignment.

And now, please check Hannah’s site to see how she made out with the country song parody assignment that I gave her.

If anyone else took on any of these assignments, please let us know so we can give you proper credit and maybe gain you some traffic.

=====================

That Hannah, she confounds me,
as Hannahs often do.
I tried to stay mum about it,
but for me, that’s hard to do.

That Hannah she tasked me
to find words for a poem,
So I said, “Sure,” but first
I drank an entire jeroboam.

Probably not the smartest
thing to do, I now know.
But did I really want to write
yet another bad canto?

So I washed down the jeroboam
with a little punch
and made up excuses as to why
I’d been “out to lunch.”

I’d been working on my new blog,
trying to make it live.
But finally I picked my six words,
not just an ordinary five.

My dictionary made it easy
which was really quite convenient
Because you know, that Hannah,
she is not always so lenient.

I came up with all kinds of
reasons under the sun
As to why I couldn’t get
my assigned poem done.

I finally ended my excuses
along with their verbal turista.
And as I post this today
we’re getting hit with a Nor’easter!

UPDATE:  Hannah and I have decided that we each should have a taste of our own medicine!  So for the next assignment we each need to take on one of the challenges we had given the other!  I’m going to take on the country song parody that I most recently assigned to Hannah.  The flexible deadline for this assignment is April 30.  Feel free to join in this time, choosing any of the previous assignments.  You can find all the posts (including links to Hannah’s assignments for me) in my Tea Room Subjects Box under Live Poet’s Society.  Don’t forget to help yourself to one of the Live Poet’s Society buttons if you take on a writing challenge!

    That assignment was purely evil.
    Well done.

LOL. Thanks, Witchypoo. I would like to try a sestina sometime, but I think it will have to be in the summer on a day when my brain hasn’t a care in the world. heehee. That Hannah is tough but at least she does get my brain working. And she’s a sweetie so I can’t resist! Good thing for me she has a sense of humor and can take a little ribbing too. ;)

//And as I post this today
    we’re getting hit with a Nor’easter//

    is that a joke?

No, we actually got snow yesterday when I finished writing this. It was a bit of an exaggeration though. Three inches of snow doesn’t quite make a Nor’easter. ;)

Most excellent Teeni! Well done. I saw Red’s, I’ll have to check out Ms. Hannah’s…. :)
Thank you, Lumpy! You should join in! :)

Love it!! You did a stellar job, once again!

You (and witchypoo) will be happy to know that I am taking on this particular challenge for the next assignment, and I WILL be writing a sestina! I’ve always wanted to write one.

Oh, and by the way? Writing a parody of a country song is no walk in the park!! I thought it would be a piece of cake, but boy was it hard! I know I don’t make these assignments easy for you, but I also love that you don’t make them easy for me! ;-) A little challenge is definitely good for the brain, and how boring would life be if everything was easy? :-)
Anyway, I totally adore your poem. Just fabulous, girl!

What? A parody of a country song not easy? ;) LOL. I guess I should probably take that on myself. You are right about the challenges. I really do enjoy them in these writing assignments. I already have my next assignment (after our little switcheroo assignments) for you in mind. It should be fun. And why do I keep forgetting to post the next assignment right in the same post? Sheesh. I’ll just update my post with that info. And now I’m off to read your assignment!

Your writing is impeccable!! Love it.

I saw your comment on my blog - we didn’t go to Mood to buy anything in particular; it was mainly a trip for my mom (an interior decorator and avid sewer), but my dad and I loved it as well (especially since I used to be a fashion major - now I just design/make clothes for fun). If you go to NYC, you MUST visit Mood - it’s truly THE fabric store to go to.

Thanks, VeggieGirl! Oh, I didn’t know your mom was an interior decorator. That is so neat. I did figure you were interested in fashion from your about page info. I’d love to see anything you design, even if it is just for fun. I mean you can’t bake ALL the time, right? ;) Mood does look/sound like a great place for fabric. I would definitely visit there.

Fantastic Teeni! How you ever used those words is beyond me… I haven’t even heard of most of them!
    :-)
Hey Kami! I hadn’t either. But as long as learning new words is fun, then it’s fine by me. And learning them for an assignment like this makes it actually fun. :)

Well, now I know what a sestina is. I certainly wouldn’t want to have to write one. You were halfway right about the definition of turista. It does have to do with tourists. But these tourists need acidophilus.

Great work on the poem. Now I will have to go see how Hannah and Red did after I look up jeroboam.

We didn’t get the snow here, just the rain.

LOL about the acidophilus! I originally thought jeroboam was a type of kangaroo rat or something. Glad you didn’t get snow. None of us need any more of it this season. :)

Well, I just left a comment but I guess I forgot to press submit.

I’ll try to remember what I wrote. Nope, I can’t remember so I will have to start from scratch.

I loved the poem. I learned three new words.

1.jeroboam. If I had one I think I would only use it for water. That much wine would kill me or give me a terrible headache.

    2. sestina. I’m no poet and have no plans on ever writing a sestina. Looks really too complicated for my brain especially if I drank a jeroboam of wine.

    3. turista. Living in a tourist trap like Cape Cod I have called them turistas. Never knew they all had DIARRHEA. There was a movie that came out in 2006 called Turistas (got terrible reviews, some horror flick I never want to see). I just wondered, did they all have diarrhea too?

Look at what you can learn reading blogs. LOL

Oh my gosh - Joan, your comments crack me up! For some reason, your comments ended up in my spam filter, but I found them! I actually did see that movie and it WAS a bunch of diarrhea! So glad I saw it on DVD and not at the movies. You were right to stay away from it. And yes, I love little bits of learning like this - that way it isn’t so much work. LOL.

    Heh…not bad! :)
LOL. Thanks. I’d love to see your take on one of these, missy!

    Lol, rather brilliant Teeni!!

    Thanks, Hay! :)

hahhaaa! That was great, Teeni. You’re definitely talented in the poetry department.
And thanks for the link for my poem :)
Thanks for the compliments, Red! And you earned the links cuz you did the assignment! Nice job you did too. :)
