Broaching the Subject of Brooches
Posted on April 19, 2008 - Filed Under Meme
My new friend, Wendy started this meme about broaches or brooches, no matter which way you spell it (according to Dictionary.com, both ways are acceptable variations). I’m just gonna call them pins from now on, LOL. Wendy has two great blogs (that I know about - there might be more - who knows?) that deserve a visit. Both are in my blogroll. She writes about life with her husband in one of them, Life with Buck. Wendy and Buck are quite the characters - you really need to visit there and see for yourself some of the conversations that go on over there as well as check out Buck’s robe collection. Wendy’s other blog, What I’m Doing Right Now, really is about whatever she is into at the moment, and believe me, whatever she is into, it is always entertaining for the rest of us. She is blunt and hilarious. But I digress. Back to the regularly scheduled meme, already in progress.
Anyway, Wendy showed us her collection and Joan showed her collection. It’s so much fun seeing all the different pins along with any little accompanying descriptions and anecdotes, that I couldn’t help but want to join in. After all, I’ve collected a few in my years too!
So here is my collection:
I seem to have an animal collection - rhinestone encrusted frogs, a fish, zebra, a couple of cats and a teddy bear tack pin. The fish is actually quite heavy and opens up - it used to hold some solid perfume inside it. I think my ex gave me that one as well as a few others. When I worked in offices I wore the bar type ones often on my blazer lapels or on scarves. The one above the fat fish is a long-stemmed rose tack pin. The one on the upper far right is like a family crest or something and it has a tassel made of chains. It was different so I used to wear it a lot as well as the horn one when I was younger.
But my favorite of all? The one on the lower left, which is a cat looking into a toilet. There is mirror there acting as the “water” and you can see the little cat’s reflection as he contemplates whether to get a drink or not. I love it because it is funny and different, as well as clever.
Okay, I showed you mine. Now show me yours! And guys, please feel free to join in with any tie pins or cufflinks (does anyone even have these anymore?). I’d love to see them! I pin (tag) anyone who has some they can photograph and show the rest of us. ![]()

I love your pins and have to admit I love the kitty in the toilet one the best. Though they are all unique. I like the ones with the blue stones especially the smaller one above the teddy bear. My cat’s drink toilet water. One of them likes to splash his paws in the water and get water everywhere.
I’ve had many people do a double-take when I’ve worn the kitty in the toilet pin. At first they think it is a cat is just looking into a mirror. LOL. It’s funny how one of your cats likes to “play” in the toilet water. My male cat loves to jump into the shower as soon as we get out and lick the bathtub. Of course there is the same filtered water in his bowl at all times. Weirdo.
I looked at your collection and instantly took to the cat looking into the toilet- I was laughing and it turns out it’s your favorite too
I’ll scour my dresser and see what I can come up with but I only think I have a “few” which is only like, maybe 2 or 3 at the most?
Very neat idea!
LOL. I’m glad you liked that one too. It really is a “classic.” heehee
I’m glad you are joining in on the brooch fun. It doesn’t matter how many - nobody is counting. We’re just nosey and want to see what you got!
oh they are rather lovely. The word brooch or however you spell it is such a nice old-fashioned word too - reminds me of my granny.
I never think to wear brooches these days for about 10 years I always wore a really really cheap Eiffel Tower on my jacket just because of who gave it to me. I was devastated when it just fell off one day.
I hardly wear brooches anymore as I don’t need to dress anymore for a job, but I used to think I was quite the fashion horse with the brooches, scarves, and skirtsuits! LOL.
I’m sorry you lost your Eiffel Tower - it obviously had sentimental value for you. The word brooch also makes me think of my grandmother.
I think there are tons of interesting looking ones at flea markets though - they are great to look through. Fun to see what everyone has in the bloggy world too.
Those are really neat Teeni! I didn’t notice the cat looking into the toilet until I read the post but how funny! I love it and you know what? It is so Teeni:-)
I think the only pins I have are the ones I got from becoming a Chartered Accountant and they aren’t very original… CA in gold. YAWN.

Oh, Kami you reminded me that I had some magnetic “pins” with my nametag on them when I worked for a bank! I should have included them! LOL
I’ve never worn or owned brooches in my life! Interesting collection.
Oh, wait…I now have a pink ribbon brooches…two of them …
Really? It’s funny because I used to wear them when I used to work but even then I didn’t like to wear a lot of jewelry. I’m not the earring-necklace-bracelet-ring kind of girl, unless it is really unique. But I liked brooches and pins because you could just dress up a blazer or tie a scarf in a fancier way with one. Somehow that seemed so much simpler to me than donning all those other little pieces.
Wow Teeni, I have the exact same set tacked all over my baseball cap. The guys at work often laugh, but at least I have my very own STYLE…haha!
Oh, you kidder! LOL. Hmmm - I never thought to put the toilet bowl kitty pin on a hat - maybe I should do that!
Funny that, because I was drawn to the cat. It’s sooo cute
I’m not brooches person, however, so I don’t have to show!
I love looking at them and their are a few heirloom ones hanging around in the family somewhere. My Mum always used to wear one on the scarf around her neck. I’d forgotten about it until now. Thanks for the memory jogger, as it made me smile when I think about it!
Hey you!!! Nice to see you! I’m so glad this brought back good memories for you!
So pretty, Teeni!
I dont own a single pin .. brooch .. broach, whatever!
Well, I guess you may have been too young for the craze, Ms. Red. But now if you get pins, I think you have to call them “flair” like in the movie, Office Space, which is a totally funny movie if you haven’t seen it.
Those are awful purty, Teens. I like the small blue one in the top row. I used to haunt thrift shops and antique stores for brooches all the time. Now I’ve got one, dont know where all the rest got to.
WC
That little blue one is one of my faves too! Aww, you need to find your collection or start a new one!
Wow… I love those brocaches. I wish I owned som myself, but I never wear them, and it seems like a waste to buy them.
Hi Leaf! Welcome to the Vaguetarian Tea Room. Well, I guess you couldn’t wear them if you didn’t have them and it really would be a waste to buy them if you wouldn’t wear them.
Hahahaha…the cat-toilet one is GREAT…it reminds me of my cat who used to drink out of the toilet…before he got too fat and lazy to hop up onto the toilet
It always amazes me how they go for the toilet water over the water in their own water bowls! I think they like porcelain or something. Anyway, I’m glad you got a smile out of my toilet bowl kitty pin!
I have a cousin who collects anything with pigs on them. I wonder if she has a pig brooch? I’ll have to ask. :p
Love the one with the cat looking in the toilet! Anyone with a cat or several can relate to that.
The woman I used to live next door to had a pig collection - but she was picky - only flying pigs! LOL. I get a kick out of what people collect.
Thanks about the cat pin - with all your cats, I was pretty sure you’d get a kick out of that one.
I love them

Watch it or i will steal one
I have a monkey brooch collection hahah I am obsessed with them!
Oh, I’d love to see a picture of those sometime! Monkeys are cute. I used to have one as a pet before, believe it or not. I’ll have to post about that sometime.
I don’t have any!! My man does have tie clips and cuff links though… I’ll try to snap a photo of them!
Awesome! I’d love to see them if you can get a shot!
It’s taken me too long to get over here (that pesky job I have) and I can’t believe I’ve been missing out on these wonderful pins! Joan’s right, the kitty in the toilet is just fabulous. But I think my favorite is the first one (in the upper left corner). Oh, I don’t know, they’re all fabulous. Thank you for sharing them with us! ♥
LOL. I understand about the job, Wendy! I just didn’t want you to think I forgot.
The one that you like really does have a very pretty green-colored gemstone in it.
Very nice collection, Teeni! And I call them pins too. hehe. I don’t have a huge collection of them - only a few. I collect bracelets. I’ll have to show off my collection sometime!
Thanks, Tish! I’d love to see your bracelets! I’m nosey, I admit it! LOL
YOu had a monkey as a pet? What the heck were you thinking? Was it hard to take care of?
Yup. We had a monkey. I was very young when we got him. My father is the one who really wanted him and the funny thing is the monkey liked everyone EXCEPT my dad and tried to bite him (I think the monkey was afraid of men). In the end, we gave him to the zoo. It’s a long story that I’ll have to post about sometime.
