Teeni’s Tips - Evolving Collage Solution

Posted on May 12, 2008 - Filed Under DIY or D-I-Y, Real Art, Teeni's Tips

I had a little problem trying to figure out how I would display all my lovely artwork from my bloggy buddies. I figured I didn’t want to buy matching frames for each one in all different sizes. Then I’d be relying on the fact that they would continue making the frames and that I could continue to get them in the future to add to my collection. I also didn’t want a whole bunch of different style frames either - it would just be too many holes in the wall and then it might make things look weird because as I added to it over time thing might look off-centered or something. But I had a little brainstorm and came up with a solution. This:

sculpture

Now I know you are wondering what IS that thing? Well, here’s a few more of them, and even Toast likes them:

toast on sculptures

Okay, no more fooling. They are really metal wall sculptures that I got on clearance at a fancy-shmancy store for $8 each. I got four of them. They are each almost 3 feet long by 1-1/2 feet high (depending on which way you hold them). Don’t you think they’d look pretty neat if they were arranged together on a wall (not on a bed)? Imagine Toast out of the way.

That’s better.

Okay, so now how are these gonna help me, especially when they are taking up all the wall space? Well, that’s the beauty of it - the more wall space these sculptures take up, the more room I have for goodies from my blog buddies. “How’s that?” you ask? Well, see the first little secret here is those cheap clear acrylic magnetic frames you can get in almost any dollar store and they come in loads of sizes.

Now I can put my blog buddies’ beautiful artwork in those frames and magnetize them to the sculpture on the wall and re-arrange or add more as I see fit. So for under $50 I was able to hang all my pretties. But don’t let that stop you from sending me any - there’s room for plenty more! Oh, and another little secret is to get TGH to hang the four sculptures on the wall for you.

Although the light is pretty horrible in this room, my photography skills are kind of non-existent, and I haven’t necessarily got everything matted the way I want, you can still see how neat this turned out, can’t you? Another home decor problem solved! YAY!

Teeni Tiny Tip: If you want to do something similar at your house, remember to take a little magnet with you when you go shopping for the metal sculpture just to be sure it is going to work!

    Magnets… hmmm… I like it

We have a big poster-sized printer at work and I’ve made posters for use in various classes. Then I’d put magnets on the back so I could put it on the white marker board in whatever classroom that I was teaching in.

Unfortunately, it turns out that not all of the white boards are backed with steel, so I’d have to use tape, which is much messier and a pain.

Magnets work better… so long as there is something to stick to.

My first thought was those magnetized white boards, but I thought all that “white” space might look funny. LOL. And yes, magnets are soooo much easier to deal with and safer than pins if they accidentally fall out.

I have to take a moment and congratulate you on the new site Teeni. I know it has been up for a while but I have been so busy in NYC and the Hamptons that I have had very little time to troll the internet. Thankfully I have some great staff that helps me run my forums or that would have gone all to hell too.

I love the new site. You rock!

Aww, thanks so much, Mark! I was really worried I had lost you for a bit there! I know you were busy and on the road though. I’m so glad you were able to make it over! You were missed! :)

Awww! **blushes** Thanks, JQ. I feel the same about each of you. You are all special and make this blogosphere such a wonderful place for me. :)

now THAT is pretty damn cool…

just dont magnatize the cat by mistake!

Hi Slyde! LOL. There is no magnet strong enough to hold Toast to a wall. He’s a big ‘un. But my female, Jam, well, she better watch out. ;)

Excellent way to be able to keep changing the look of how you display your gifts!! I love it! And with using the magnetic frames you don’t waste a lot of time making sure the photo is in properly!! Nice tip!

Thanks, Melsie! I bet you could use a wall of these for all the artwork you must get from your little artists, huh? :)

Brilliant idea, Teens. I never would have thought of something like that in a million years. Not sure where I’d find the sculptures but I’ll definitely remember the idea for the future.
    Annie

Thanks, Annie! I just lucked out with the clearance sale at the fancy-shmancy place, but I have seen similar things at arts and crafts stores like Michael’s and JoAnn’s, don’t know if there are any of those near you.
