Sometimes I Lose Things
Posted on May 13, 2008 - Filed Under I'm Not Perfect
Yeah, I do. I don’t know how it happens. Sometimes I don’t even leave the general vicinity and suddenly things have gone missing. I don’t know if it’s aging, absent-mindedness, or chemo-induced fog brain, and as much as I’d like to be able to blame it on that last one, I really don’t think that is it. So it must be the absent-mindedness.
I like to chop extra fresh veggies when I’m doing the work and have the cutting board out anyway, then store them in a container in the fridge to use later in the week without having to do the work again. Well, one time I chopped up a good amount of green onions and for the life of me, I couldn’t find the dang things later in the week when I wanted them. We have a big refrigerator so I figured the container was probably hidden way in back, but they weren’t there!
Of course I told TGH about this after a few days when I was totally exasperated and feeling distraught that I was losing my mind. He searched for them with me…and found them…in.the.cabinet. The one above and to the right of the stove, on the opposite wall of the refrigerator. Why I would have put them up there is beyond me. I have trouble focusing sometimes and all I can think is that I must have been on the phone (can’t do two things at once). I hated having to throw them out.
Shortly after this incident, a friend was driving me home from my niece’s house. My niece had given me a ziplock gallon bag filled with a friendship bread starter batter. I had put that, plus a few things I had picked up at the store into the back seat of my friend’s car. When we got to my house, I grabbed my things but my friend noticed I didn’t have the friendship bread batter. I looked back in the back seat and it was no where in sight. My friend helped me look because the last thing she wanted was to find this bag of fermented starter in her car after a hot day. It seemed to have inexplicably disappeared. We removed everything from the back seats and still it was missing. Finally, after about 15 minutes of searching, my friend looked at a different angle and her eye caught something. The bag of friendship bread starter had fallen between the seats and slid over so it wasn’t really visible on the floor or on the seat unless you looked at the perfect angle. I couldn’t believe it. But fortunately, the bread was saved and went on to make several more breads and bags of starter.
The worst part about this whole friendship bread starter batter is that after I had given some to my mom, and she had made the bread, she claims she gave me back some of the starter in a new bag. I honestly don’t remember bringing it home and neither does TGH, but she can only account for three out of four bags at her house. So that means that one of us is going to be in a for a rude awakening when that bag turns up.
Most recently, I was in my room, gathering clothes to take into the bathroom with me so I could dress immediately after my shower. I also tidied the room up a bit as I went, throwing things into the hamper and clearing off my dresser. Then I threw my clothes onto the bathroom floor and realized I did not have a bra. Now I knew I had pulled one out of the dresser and that I had held it in my hands so where on earth could it have gone? I ventured nowhere else in the house except from my room to the bathroom. I almost tore the made bed apart to make sure it hadn’t gotten under the bedcovers even though I knew it couldn’t have gotten under there because the bed had been made before I started gathering my clothes together. It hadn’t been dropped along the way; there was nothing on the floor. It wasn’t on my dresser and I hadn’t put it back in a drawer. It wasn’t in the closet. I began asking myself over and over, “Where the flying frick can it be?” Then I began to question my own sanity and was almost in tears and asking again for TGH’s help (I hate when I get like that and feel so stupid and helpless, but it happens sometimes).
At first, he was almost as flabbergasted as I was. He knew I hadn’t come out beyond the bedroom and bathroom so it HAD to be here somewhere. He had actually given up when I accidentally found it. It had fallen behind the hamper when I tossed something else in there. It must have fallen out of my hand when I lifted the cover of the hamper off and I didn’t even notice it fall out of my hand because I still had the other clothes in it. Sheesh. I really can be a basket case sometimes.
But TGH’s standard first response now when I lose something and ask him where it could be is “I dunno. It’s probably with the green onions.” Hrrrmph! Men.

I do things like that too, sometimes! I blame mine on pregnancy brain that never went away. Hmmm, I’m thinking that excuse ain’t gonna hold up for much longer … I guess I’ll have to start using old age!
I did have a wee chuckle at your stories, but not at your expense. I could tell you were actually quite upset about them but I hope looking back you can smile … because they were a bit funny!
LOL. Thanks, Hannah! You are so sweet - I know you laugh WITH me and not AT me. You’re a true friend and I appreciate it more than you’ll ever know. And don’t worry, I do laugh now but boy when it is happening (and having a hot flash at the same time, it really intensifies those feelings of alternately wanting to cry/kill someone at the same time - what an emotional rollercoaster). I’m much better now, though.
The only good thing about this happening to you is that it makes me feel better about myself. It happens to me so often, I’m convinced Alzheimers is just around the corner. My worst problem is not remembering what people say to me. My sister thinks it’s an attention problem and that I don’t focus enough when people talk to me. That doesn’t answer the question as to how the deodorant got in the refrigerator.
LOL. I suppose things could be worse. You know, we could lose bigger things, like cars or children. I’m glad I made you feel better Joan! So some good came of my losses after all.
Haha! I have found my soul sister. I do it. All. The. Time! I swear! I am usually doing one thing with my mind completely on something else and then I will thing, where is that? Sometimes I even throw things in the bin. Oh Teeni, I feel ya girl!
Oh, the bin! Goodness - I KNOW I’ve done that before. That just about kills me when I realize it later!
You’re very brave to admit to things like this for everybody to read.
I get distracted all the time when I need to do something and forget about it when I get distracted.

You’re very brave….Woah! Déjà vu!
LOL. Thanks, Mac!
Sometimes I lose things that just don’t turn up again, like my amethyst ring, and my windchime necklace.
Oh, that stinks, Witchypoo! I have never seen a windchime necklace. It sounds so cool. If you ever find it - please post a pic!
Even though I’m only 20, I too lose things; and sometimes I even walk into a room and will say to myself, “Wait, why did I come in here?” haha. Hang in there, Teeni! We all have “lost memory moments.”
YAY! Then that proves it’s not my age! heehee.
“in.the.cabinet.” We all have those “senior moments” is what I like to call them. I think I mentioned in my “about me” page that my short term memory is so bad that it scares me!!!! I’m right there with you! I wonder if we just have too much on our mind? I think so Teeni!
Definitely! There are those thoughts always running like one of those stock market tickers in the background of my mind. I think that explains a lot of my focusing/attention span/memory problems. I’m glad I’m not alone.
What? It’s not okay to put the milk in the cupboard and the cereal in the fridge? Maybe you have a ghost living with you that likes playing tricks on you? : )
Yeah, that’s what’s been going on! See TGH? You won’t be committing me to any asylums any time soon!
Naughty girl chopping the veg so long before using! Apparently that’s one of the biggest ways to lose vitamins prior to cooking, a number of which will be lost just by dint of being in the fridge, even whole. The other common mistake with veggies is to cook them from cold, when they should always be immersed in water which is boiling first and cooked as little as possible (preferably steamed)
Sorry, I know I’ve got a cheek for someone who scarcely cooks, but I almost had an Italian mother-in-law who literally slapped my wrist when catching me commit these heinous crimes!
LOL. Well, I worried about that too but then I read up on it. This link was pretty informative and since I use most produce or freeze it within a few days (when I’m not forgetfully storing them in cabinets), I don’t think there is an issue. http://nutrition.about.com/od/askyournutritionist/f/cutveg.htm Also, I almost always steam my veggies - they look fabulous and still taste like veggies if you don’t overdo it so they turn to mush. Don’t you think so? I like a bit of bite still in them.
Oh, and I DID have an Italian mother-in-law. Contrary to popular belief, they are not ALL great cooks. Trust me, my food was better!
lol, teeni you are too cute.
this is my life these days - i blame it on placenta brain.
Thanks, Diva. I may not know where I am or what I’m doing, but it seems I’ve got good company!
Awe, don’t worry about it too much Teeni! I do the same thing. I just lost a baggie of yogurt covered pretzels right before I sat down to read your blog.
Everyone looses stuff!
Aww, thanks, Talina. I do hope you find your pretzels though! I’ve never had one of those.
This happens to me all the time. I get so mad I could spit nails. It’s the how can I be so silly that makes me so angry.
Recently we found a halter top that I lost two summers ago. Last summer I pined for that top. Guess where it was? Behind one of our nightstands. And we only found it because we moved it to paint.
Thank goodness it wasn’t bread starter. Now that would have been nasty! Though it would have likely made it’s presence known sooner
LOL. Oh, Kami - that would have been a great post for you! You made me laugh - thanks, buddy. I needed that.
ahahhaa! what a smartie pants, he is! with the green onions!
have you ever put the ice cream in the cupboard where the bowls normally are? yep, i have.
Well, THAT’s one I haven’t done yet! It makes me feel better though!
awww…I know exactly what you mean and I don’t know what it is, it could be general absentminded-ness, i.e. I put the milk in the cupboard once, went to work and didn’t find it till I got home!! WTF!??!?
Cool! I haven’t done that one yet either. You guys are really starting to cheer me up! LOL
I do that allllllll the time! LOL I also forget where I am going. I will go into a room and not have a clue why I am there LOL Or get up and start going to get something and forget what I was wanting to get…Memory is the second thing to go, they tell me. I wish I could remember what the first thing is!! *~*
LOL. Thanks, Calamity - you always make me smile!
at least you are the one causing your own losing of things….
my wife will CONSTANTLY move my shit to somewhere else without telling me, then leave the house.
and i have to run and play sherlock holmes for 2 hours trying to guess “hmmm, if i were her, where would i put it?”
LOL. We need to get your wife blogging so we can hear her side of the stories.
Awww you are not alone. I am always forgetting things. I often say to the boys in that tone of irritation that implies that I think they have hidden it: “where’s my bag, I know I left it here.” And they snigger and point and there it is on my shoulder all the time.
And I am always going up the stairs and then getting there and standing there like lemon cos I have no idea what i went up there for!
Thanks, RB! I’m glad all the cool people are in the same club as me!
Aw Teens,
Don’t feel bad about that stuff - I swear I’m still looking for a pair of black socks I lost in ‘86 and a black bathing suit. With me, it’s always black articles of clothing - I wonder if there is some sort of hint in there. I think we all have so much stuff going on in our lives that we just get absent minded about stuff, you know?
Annie
Thanks, Annie! That’s funny about you and black things. Kind of a selective absent-mindedness? But you are right - we are all so busy these days that it could happen to anyone.
one time i put the remeaining frozen green beans into our junk drawer in the kitchen and found them like a week later. i think this happens when our minds are busy, don’t you? we’re doing and thinking, but not about the same things.
hee hee.
“doing and thinking, but not about the same things” - that is the BEST way I’ve heard it described ever! You know you are creative in SO many areas, not just the painting/drawing/sewing/pinholes (as if that weren’t enough)! I love how you think!
LOL, I do stuff like that all the time! My mom says it’s only going to get worse.
Great. So I’ve got more of this to look forward to and also shrinking. Sheesh
I haven’t read all the comments yet but WOW this is obviously a common problem!
Teeni, you are SO not alone!
I once lost a package of chicken;
(but in MY case, did NOT know it was lost or even that I had purchased it)
Time passed.
We started to notice a terrible smell in the car, and couldn’t locate the source.
We TOO tore the car apart and still no luck.
THEN one day H was putting something into the trunk, and THERE was a package of chicken(?); but I can only say that maggots were involved by this time(and MUST say nothing more as I am too sure everyone can imagine what it was like)
This must have been about 2 or 3 MONTHS later!
Can you imagine the smell?!
UGH.
So don’t feel badly!
Wow! I can only imagine - that must have been some stench. I’m sorry you had to deal with that but it did make me feel better too. I hope that’s ok.
You crack me up Teeni! I only lose important stuff, especially if I have to have it right then, like my keys. I actually lost my wallet with a lot of money in it, and after 5 hours of looking, I found it in the trash covered in rotten food. I’ll never know how that happened…lol:)
I lose things of all value types. But I’m so glad you found your wallet again. Sheesh. I often think about the things I may have accidentally tossed into the trash over the years. Then I have to stop thinking about it so I don’t depress myself! LOL.
