I Can Flare One Nostril - Amazing Human Tricks
Posted on May 22, 2008 - Filed Under My Sick Humor
Well, I can right now anyway. It’s not something I can usually do, I admit.
Today I had to go and, let’s just say, I had to get some work done on my mouth. This way I can spare you all the messy medical-type details. Now I actually have a very high tolerance for pain. But not for the FEAR of pain. Even though I can handle a bit of pain, I’m still afraid of it and get all anxious that it is going to be too much for me. So I cried all the way driving myself to my appointment. Yeup - I’m a big baby when it comes to doctors and dentists and scrubs of any sort.
So I get there and get all numbed up from novacaine and everything gets done with only one or two ouches from me. Then they give me a cup, tell me to swish it around in my mouth and then spit it back into the cup. Well, that sounds a heck of a lot easier than it is to do when half of your mouth is still numb. I took a sip, tried to swish, and when the liquid went to the numb side of my mouth, instead of being able to move it around with my tongue and cheeks, I managed to spout it right out of my mouth like a giant park water fountain. It went all over my leg and the dentist chair in a big ungraceful glop.
Although nobody else was in the room with me, I started thinking how funny this would be on camera and I started laughing as only a person with half a numb mouth can do. And for some reason, even though the first attempt failed, I thought I might be able to do it right if I tried again. So I did…with the same result. And because I’m silly and curious, I tried and failed a third time. Finally, I had to get up and get some towels from the little sink area in the corner and clean up the chair and myself as best I could. Fortunately, they didn’t give me too much of that liquid or I might have kept going. I don’t know why they don’t have you just spit into the sink. Things would be a lot less messy that way.
Anyway, driving on the way home, I looked in the rear view mirror and noticed that when I tried to flare my nostrils, only one would move. I guess one of the novacaine shots I got must have affected my nose too. It still feels cold on one side.
Yes, it’s true, I’m easily amused. But I’m the happy kind. Do you have any amazing human tricks that you can do?

I can turn my eyelids inside out. It’s totally awesome.
That is pretty cool! I bet it looks freaky!
i did the same thing after having a tooth pulled years ago.. they asked me to spit and even tho i thought i was able to projectile the water thru the air into the basin, all i did was open my numb mouth and send it all dribbling down my shirt… most manly, i know..
LOL. I think they give us too much credit when out mouths are numb. Maybe they forget what it’s like?
Too bad you didn’t get it on tape — you’d be an instant YouTube star.
Can’t be any worse than the stuff that is out there already, right?
I can flare both nostrils and I thought that was pretty cool. But you have me BEAT!!
TGH was trying to flare his after I told him my story and he couldn’t do it. I thought everyone could.
Out of respect for your family friendly blog rating, I will not divulge any of my tricks.
ROFL - Thanks Evyl! You are cool. And I’m glad you commented anyway.
Oh where will you unleash yourself next?
Who knows? Be afraid. Be very afraid. LOL
Oh my, thanks for the laugh, I gawfawed out loud when you spit like a park fountain! And that you tried again… what a ham! THAT on video would win you some money on AMV!
And were is the picture of your one nostril flaring? Inquiring minds (or nosey, excuse the pun) want to see!
Ha! The word guffaw makes me guffaw! I get so silly sometimes. Sorry no pictures - I was driving when I noticed it. And now that the novacaine has worn off, I can only do both at the same time again. LOL
And I have no tricks, unless you could rolling my tongue..
That counts I think. Not everyone can do that. I always thought everyone could! More info on this interesting stuff here in case anyone likes that kind of thing. http://www.thetech.org/genetics/ask.php?id=125
Well, that gave me a good laugh just before I go to sleep. I’ll probably dream about dentists tonight. I try not to go to them. I have dentalphobia.
Oh, I hope I didn’t give you nightmares, Joan! I bet yours would make an interesting post though if you did.
both my thumbs are double jointed, so i can pop them out of place making my hands look all wonky… some day i’ll post about that…
also, my hips are double jointed - but not in any way that would benefit B-rad or myself in the sack. More in the way that, if i’m standing a certain way for a long time, it’ll just pop out and it looks kinda gross. lol.
i can move my ears, and flare my nostrils, but B-rad can do it one at a time!! it’s creepy. but kinda cool.
I’m not sure why this ended up in the moderation queue this time. But I have rescued it! Oh yes, definitely post about your double jointedness! That would make an interesting post. I saw that on your blog in your little description about your thumbs but I thought you were kidding! LOL. But the hip one - that is freaky. I hope it doesn’t hurt. I try like heck but can never move my ears. Wow - B-rad is talented! I could only do my one nostril because of the novacaine. To be able to move them separately under his own power is pretty amazing. Oh, if only we could put these powers to some practical use, huh?
Poor you!
I hope you are feeling better now. I had terrible misfortune with gum disease and had to be numbed at six-weekly intervals for that delightful treatment known as ‘root planing’ at my hygienists for a year.
Saved my teeth though, so although it was hell, it was worth every penny! I do remember I couldn’t eat or drink for several hours afterwards without it dropping out of my mouth again!
Oh, my sympathies, Poet! Gum disease is the real reason I was there. Yes, that numbing really does last for a while longer than you would expect, but I am very thankful for it.
I’m so glad your teeth were saved.
I love that you got such a kick out of it you kept trying! It’s so fun when we can keep ourselves to entertained by being silly.
I can touch the tip of my nose with my tongue.
I usually am very good at keeping myself entertained. I guess it is a good thing, because I can only imagine the types of trouble I’d get into if not properly amused. LOL. Oh, I always wanted to be able to reach my nose with my tongue but I think my tongue is too short!
Omigoodness! Between you and Slyde I’m going to lose my Internet privledge at work! I keep laughing out loud in my cubicle and everyone comes running to see what’s so funny!
The last time I was at the dentist I totally spit all over myself AND the hygenist. And then I tried not to laugh at the situation b/c I was so embarrassed and I snorted. Oh boy. I hate the dentist.
I’m glad Slyde and I make you laugh. He is awesome. I love his posts. I’m also kinda glad you spit on the hygienist. Some of them are kind of snooty. LOL.
hi teeni!
i had a root canal last year and i had to go to the dentist once in every week for a month! it was my most traumatic experience so far.
i can’t do any amazing trick, but i have a pair of funny ears because the middle part of its outer rims are tipped backwards.
thank you for dropping by my blog!
Oh, that IS traumatic. I’m glad that is over for you. Oh, tipped backward - I guess that is better than tipped forward! Ears are funny looking little things when you analyze them alone, don’t you think? All those folds and cartilage and stuff. No wonder many of us try to decorate them with jewelry. LOL
I must say reading some of Those tricks i am glad I cant do any of those
But some are kind of interesting, don’t you think?
Ha! Fun times at the dentist, I don’t think I have any cool tricks… Sometimes my eyes make sounds!
Wow - that is interesting. I have never heard of anyone whose eyes make sounds! You may have to do a post about THAT!
lol That’s one way to pass the afternoon. That and soup!
Oh yeah - I made hubby stop on the way home and pick up some onion soup for me.
What?!! No video? Doh, you’re depriving us!!!!
Umm . . what can I do .. . . . I can roll the tongue. I can touch my nose with my tongue. I can move my boobs.
Hope you’re feeling better ..
Sorry - I didn’t think to bring the video camera with me to the dentist. But I think you would have laughed if you had seen me. Cool that you can move your boobs! And another who can touch her nose with her tongue? I’m jealous - I always wanted to be able to do that when I was a kid and saw other kids do it!
Teens, you are a ONE WOMAN party girl! I love it and got such a kick out of your post. I got a giggle imagining you wiggling your nose in the mirror! Ha! Ha! Ha! And, I sincerely hope that you are doing well after your procedure!
I have a very bizarre talent. It’d be easier if I could show you but,… well, I can’t. First of all, I’m a “Lefty”, I write with my left hand. However, if I’m at a blackboard or dry erase board, with marker in each hand raised up to board as if to write; I can simultaneously WRITE A WORD OR SENTENCE BACKWARDS WITH MY LEFT HAND AND WITH THE RIGHT HAND, WRITE FORWARDS (REGULARLY). No, I’m not ambidextrous either, it’s just a very weird quirk. I’ve always been able to write backwards, just never knew I could do this until I saw some woman featured on a news segment who could do it. I said, “I can do that!” and my hubby said, “No way.” and I got up and did it like it was second nature. Good times
Wow! I was amazed by the talent you described! My brain couldn’t wrap itself around the fact that you could do that - what I’ll call “mirror” writing! So out of curiosity, I got up and tried to do it in the air. Holy crap! I can do it too! That’s pretty neat and now I’m going to impress everyone I know by trying to do it in front of them. Oh, and I’m right-handed.
ROFL! I swear, we must be related.
Oh, you can do the water spout thing too? LOL
Teeni You are TOO funny!
I LOVED that you tried again and again…
(LOL!)
You sound like Mr Bean(did you ever see his escapade at the dentist??)
I can WIGGLE my ears!
My sis and brother could , and being a determined little girl, I learned to do it too..lol
(I can roll my tongue which is also not common I think?)
I LOVE Mr. Bean! How cool - I always try to wiggle my ears but nothing happens except I end up making some really screwy-looking faces. LOL
I HATE going to the dentist. Fortunately we have a local dentist whose motto is that he caters to cowards. I actually changed to him rather than go back to my old one who I hadn’t been to in years. Now I take anti-anxiety tablet the night before an appointment that for anything more than cleaning. Then I take another tablet 30 minutes before the appointment. Once I’m in the chair, I get the happy gas, and of course, by the time the numbing needle with the novacane is inserted, I shouldn’t have a care in the world. However, I still stiffen up in anticipation of the pain. It is SO much better than previous dental experiences.
I can wiggle my ears and nose as well as roll my tongue.
Oh, that is good thinking to take an anti-anxiety tablet. I don’t normally take anything unless I absolutely have to but this (dentist or doctor visit) is one I would make an exception for.
Hey - you are a talented man, Mr. Goad! I can only roll my tongue. Okay, now we have to have you try that writing thing that JavaQueen mentioned in her comment.
You know they had you on camera when you did that right? I’m sure some of them get a kick out of people hopped up on novocaine.
Also friends never let other friends drive with only one nostril flaring.
I really hope they don’t have that on camera. They don’t take video of that stuff, do they? Oh man, now I’m going to be all paranoid. I better not find that footage on Youtube someday. LOL@friends letting friends drive with only one nostril flaring!
coolness! my hubby can do a funny trick wherein one corner of his mouth goes up and the opposite end goes down. kinda hard to visualize no? but he mimics threading a string through it then pulling on it so its like he controls the movements of his mouth with an invisible string.
did i just confuse you?
have a nice weekend!
Hi Caryn and welcome to the Vaguetarian Tea Room! Your hubby has a cool talent! I have seen that done and it always fascinates me - I could watch it for hours. LOL. Thanks for the well wishes. You have a great weekend also and drop in any time!
expect a post about my double jointed thumbs tomorrow!!
Awesome! I’m looking forward to it!
My kinda weird things, hmmmm… Well I can pinch with my toes just about or even harder than I can with my fingers. Also my elbows are double jointed, I can turn them around quite far. Cam thinks I’m a freak because of it.
Wow. That is cool about the elbows. And I’ve never heard of anyone being able to pinch harder with their toes than their fingers. That is pretty neat.
