People Like to Give Me Things
Posted on May 27, 2008 - Filed Under Positive Attitude
And I like to get things. Works out pretty good, right? I’m certainly not complaining - just making an observation. So I guess it’s okay that I lose things every so often. LOL. In addition to the lovely things my blog buddies have given me, here are a few stories about when people have just randomly given me stuff.
Most recently, while I was with my Niece #1 at Hell-Mart, she was picking up pictures that she had done of her youngest child. I happened to mention to the girl working the counter that I loved her hair - she had shiny, thick, dark hair that was parted in one of those funky zig-zag parts and then rolled and clipped up high on each side of her head. It was very pretty without being too overly done. She thanked me and explained how she did it. Granted, I could never pull that off because my hair is neither thick nor long enough but maybe my niece could if she wanted. Anyway, I listened because it is just interesting to me. But I digress.
Now you all know how it works - they take a couple of photos of your child and make you choose from them and narrow it down to whatever you can afford in the package that they offer. They always take more adorable pictures of your child than you can possibly afford to buy and they hold those out and try to get you to buy more later. That’s how it works. We all know. That’s fine. I understand they are trying to make money and the package that my niece had bought was a good deal.
So this young lady shows us the photos that were not chosen and there was just one shot of my great nephew that was adorable - from the smile on his face and his outstretched arms right down to his little toes in his adorable little Patriots outfit. Like most of us, my niece is not rolling in the dough, and she has two young ones so she really has to stick to her budget. But I really liked that photo and could tell she did too so I asked the girl how much to get just that additional photo but she explained that it would cost so much and would be part of another set, blah, blah, blah. So I was just starting to turn her down because the price was a little more than I wanted to pay for just one photo. Then, miracle of all miracles, the tables turned and suddenly she was offering us the photo and not only that, but some cardboard photo mats that were just sitting in the window - there were five of them. She said they would have just gotten thrown away eventually. We all know that is what happens with the unsold photos also so it really wasn’t any skin off her back to offer them but you know, usually people don’t do that. So needless to say, Niece #1 and I were very happy about that nice turn of events! And at least one part of Hell-Mart isn’t really hellish.
One time, I was at a salon with my great-niece and her bridesmaids. We were getting our nails done for her wedding. They also had tanning beds there and a wall full of different tanning lotions. One brand of lotion had a cute little stuffed doll that hugged around the bottle with the help of two little magnets in its hands. I thought it was the cutest thing so the woman took one off a bottle and gave it to me. I still have it and it sometimes hangs from my fridge or other different metallic areas around my home and it is always ready to play with my great-niece or great nephew when they are over.
Yet another time, when TGH and I took a trip to Prince Edward Island - we met up with a nice gentleman at a store called “The Grumpy Old Man.” He seemed pleasantly surprised to find we were from the Boston area but weren’t snobs. We talked with him for a while, about an hour, actually. I could tell TGH was wanting to leave but I thought we were providing some company for the guy (there was nobody else there the whole time we were) and we weren’t on a schedule. Well, Mr. Grumpy, who really wasn’t very grumpy after all, tried to talk us into retiring up there and gave me a nice little bottle of the colored soil that I loved so much during our trip even though I only bought one little trinket while I was there. But I was very grateful for it because the trinket I bought was a souvenir for the woman who was taking care of Toast and Jam. But because he gave me that little bottle of soil, I have a souvenir of my own from the trip! Yay!
So even though I lose things sometimes, I think things work out okay for me all in all.

I am absolutely not surprised that people like to give stuff to you - you are such a LOVELY person! Of course they want to give things to you
I loved reading these stories. It gave me a warm fuzzy feeling that reminds me how there really are kind & generous people out there
There really are and although some people are always on edge and ready to snap, there are some people who are full of kindness and all it takes is a smile to unleash it.
I’m usually the one who will give someone something, even a complete stranger and they are so taken a-back. It’s fun. I’m like that too if someone comes over to my house and just loves something that I have, I’ll say, “Take it”. Things just don’t mean anything to me. I’m in the process of de-cluttering and it feels good to give my things if it will bring someone else some happiness! Great job on your “scores”!
Oh, decluttering is such an uplifting feeling! I think it’s funny but sometimes I panic about getting rid of something but then there is always something I can use to take its place. So after I’ve overcome my panic and thought it through - I realize I’m better off. It’s people and time that are irreplaceable, not things. Once we truly realize that, we are in a better place.
It was nice of that photo chick to help ya’ out. Although risking her job. Hell-Mart can be pricks when it comes to giving free stuff away.
So ya’ like that ol’ Red colored sand from PEI ey’?
I hope that photo chick didn’t get in trouble. It’s not like they lost any money over something they were going to toss anyway, but yeah, I’ve heard stories about Hell-Mart and that is why I don’t like it much.
Oh, I love that PEI soil - it is soooo pretty. What a beautiful color against the water and the sky. I had some pics on FlickR. I should put them up again.
**sigh**
Free is my absolute favourite price. I’ll be working on PEI this summer, but I think I’ll opt for a church lobster supper rather than a bottle of sand.
LOL. Yeah, sand is not the best dinner. I do hope you get your lobster though - sounds like you are looking forward to it. PEI is beautiful though, isn’t it? And yes, free is a great price!
Teeni, you’re a wonderful person - no surprise you’re the recipient of such lovely things :0)
Aww, thanks VeggieGirl. I do TRY to be a nice person.
Loosing stuff just makes room for getting new stuff. You are right it all works out!
LOL. Good way of looking at it!
You keep attracting all the right people, Teeni! keep it up!!
That must be it. I hope I can keep it up!
I like meeting nice people.
When I had my store I used to give stuff away. I used to get a lot of samples from sales people of stuff I wasn’t going to sell and I would give it to customers. What goes around, comes around. You give a little, you get a little. So you must give a lot because you get a lot. Who wouldn’t want to give Teeni something cool. She’s a cool gal. I went to PEI on my honeymoon. I am such an Anne of Green Gables fan.
I got something today too. I told my wasband I wanted to attract Baltimore Orioles to the yard and he came home with two Oriole fruit feeders. So I am on m,y way outdoors to see if I can put them up alone.
Aww, thanks, Joan - you made my heart swell. Oh, that is great about the feeders! I hope you get some orioles to watch - how pretty they are! Oh, I thought of you yesterday Joan because I applied for a part time job at a health food store!
Your loveliness shines through hence the random acts of kindness. You deserve every one
Aww, Kami - thanks so much! You are too kind.
The Grumpy Old Man Store sounds like my kind of joint.
There were a lot of great things in the store and the guy who ran it was a lot of fun. Definitely check him out if you get to Prince Edward Island!
It’s definitely awesome to give, but heck ya I love getting free stuff!!! I don’t usually get free stuff just for being awesome like you (LOL), but I love when stuff becomes free…i.e. I started using a registered Starbucks gift card and now the flavoured syrup in my latte is always free, yippee!
Hey - every little free thing counts! LOL. And if you are happy with the little things, then the bigger things will come your way.
i DO find that i often get alot of things from female clerks/salespeople.
It probably has something to do with me being so damn hot and all, but i do try to work it as much as i can….
Aw, Slyde - you are too modest! LOL. Can’t blame you for trying to work it though.
I suspect it is because you are so lovely and smiley - I always imagine you that way anyway.
When my son was a toddler he had huge blue eyes and blond curly hair. In Wales where we lived that was unusual (the Welsh are generally dark) and complete strangers were forever coming up to him and giving him money or presents. It was very odd. But it always felt rather lovely.
Thanks, RB! It’s nice to know someone thinks of me that way.
I can see why a blue-eyed, curly-haired little boy would be fawned over like that. His smile must have lit up the place, no matter where he was. Hmmm - I’m dark so I maybe could pass for Welsh.
Must be your aura!
Hey Casdok! Long time no see! I hope you are well - I keep you and C in my thoughts always.
Some of those photo places can be murder. M. and I took our wedding portrait at the Walmart photo studio here (completely decked out in his fancy uniform and my huge ballgown wedding dress lol…the whole store was staring and people were coming up to congratulate us). They didn’t give us anything, but since the photos were digital, they had a website where I could order the ones we didn’t take…at $12 a sheet!
There used to be a pretty popular bait and switch here where you’d “win” a free portrait from a photography studio. Then they’d take dozens of photos with effects and try to get you to buy them. I got sucked in to it, but I refused the extra pics. The saleswoman threw them into her trash bin (she couldn’t have been a better actress…Streep should watch out). A few weeks later, tada! A mailer arrives offering me all the pics for $50, and my Mom insisted we buy them.
Precisely one of the reasons why we refer to them as Hell-Mart. LOL@ Streep should watch out. Your wedding dress sounds beautiful. Got pics?
Hey! i’ve given you an award over on my site. Come check it out.
What’s that? An award? For mois? From the Diva? **leaves a cloud of dust like the roadrunner on her way out the door to the Diva’s place**
Fun stories. Most people just throw tomatoes at me.
LOL. Stop making me laugh and drool out of the numb side of my face! I’d give you a dirty look but I can’t right now.
That smiley will have to do.
Let me know if you get the job. I miss working at mine so much. I think you would enjoy the job.
Oh, you will definitely be one of the first to hear since I may need your expertise.
I aint surprised in the least, Teeni . .
Thanks Ms. Red - that’s awfully sweet of you.
