Today I Saw A Turtle

Posted on May 29, 2008 - Filed Under Thoughts Out Loud

in the middle of the road as I was on my way home from the gym. My car easily cleared it but it was a sizable guy so after thinking about it, I turned around and went back to get him out of the road. Before I could get there though, another four cars and a tractor-trailer had come along the road that way and passed me as I made my way back.

Apparently another man also saw the turtle and turned back to try and save it. He pulled over at the same place as me. He looked a bit geeky and was a bit overweight. We both looked over and saw that the poor turtle had been hit. We both joked about what saps we were and he told me he loved turtles and had saved a really big one in a different area of town. He went into the road and confirmed that the turtle was dead and moved it out of the way of traffic to prevent any accidents. We commiserated and wished each other well and parted ways.

I’m so sorry for that turtle and that we weren’t able to get it out of harm’s way in time. But I really am glad that there are people like that overweight, geeky guy, who would go out of his way to save a turtle, in this world. Thanks, guy. You are a beautiful man.

P.S. Originally I had another post in mind for today, but this one needed to be done first, in my opinion. And by the way, I can only flare my OTHER nostril today.

That’s terribly devastating about the turtle - the same thing happened to a mother goose, who was trying to lead her little ones across the road (the babies made it - the mother didn’t). Terrible how in a hurry people are, when they drive; and it angers me to no end. Kudos to you though, for trying to save the turtle.

Thanks, VeggieGirl. It stinks to see this kind of stuff. Sometimes I hate cars. But more often the people driving them.

Good for you saving the turtle it’s something I would have done also, in fact I have done it before. A few weekends ago I saved a bird. It was in the middle of the road. It could not move due to a hurt wing. I took it home, took care of it, it’s fine now.

It’s good that people will go out of their way to do that. I really think sometimes that we need to go back to horse and buggy. And we need to be dang good to the horses too and not overwork them.

I’ll have to ask my wasband if he was in your area. Your description of him sure sounds like the wasband. He has saved more animals and then brought them home to me to take care of than you could imagine. I’m happy that you at least tried to save him. Not many people will stop and go to the bother of turning around for any animal hurt in the road.

Awww. I can see why you and your wasband still get along if he is that kind to animals. :)

    Oh, poor turtle!
But yes, it is lovely to know that there are kind people like that man (and of course you!) who would stop and try to save it. I would too. I like turtles.

Turtles are cute and really they don’t bother anyone. Although they could become a road hazard, if people are going too fast. :( Poor things.

Awww, poor guy - the turtle not the overweight geek - it is wonderful to know there are people like you in this world.

    :-)

And I may or may not have snorted when I read about your nostril. Again I repeat where is the video of these shananigans Teeni? Where?

    ;-)

I shouldn’t have described the guy that way because I fit the same description! LOL. Oh, this time I asked why I couldn’t just use the sink to spit into. I told him last time I FAILED when trying to spit back into the cup. So he said “Oh, then you can use the sink.” D’uh. Why last time did you hand me a cup? Really, I think maybe they do make candid camera movies out of this stuff.

I’m glad you tried, sorry it was a bit too late.
    You sweetheart, you.

Thanks, Witchypoo. These things always make you wonder what you could have done differently. Sometimes there just is nothing you could have changed.

OMG I am glad you tried saving him but, I teared up reading that!

Me too while I was writing it. :(

You need to learn to shift gears on the jeep girl. LOL I would have helped the turtle too but then again I am a Saint. ;)

Yeah, my jeep is kinda jumpy. Maybe my meez doesn’t know how to drive. Where did she get her license, anyway? Does she even HAVE a license? Wait, I don’t want to ask questions I may not want to know the answers to. ;)

It was fresh. You could have made soup. ;)

Thanks, Evyl. I needed that chuckle. :)

How nice of you, Teeni. Too bad you couldn’t save the little fella.
We get little turtles ALL the frickin’ TIME on the roads here. Just little bitty turtles that’d fit in your palm . . Im constantly straddling them babies on the back roads.

I wonder where they are going when they cross the roads. Do they know there is something better on the other side? Hmmm. This is actually the third time that I’ve seen quite sizable turtles (they may actually be tortoises for all I know) on a road in these parts. I never realized there were so many.

Too many questions asked about this post ;)

That was a thoughtful and sweet attempt, by both. Sorry it didn’t have a happier ending - - - I would have tried too. You are a good hearted person Teeni! We need more of you in this world!

Thanks, Java Queen. I wish it could have been happier too. But I’m glad it was over quickly.

I remember one time as a kid, no more than 12, driving home from the local state park with my family and as we were heading home, a box turtle was crossing the road. My father had missed hitting it and he pulled over and made me get out and go move the turtle to the other side of the road. We felt good that we were able to save it. There were a few other cars that had passed in the short amout of time that we were pulled over so I am sure that the turtle would probably not have made it.

    Turtles are cool!

YAY! Another turtle saver! :) Turtles really ARE cool. I love watching them.

Aw that’s sweet. So glad you stopped, funny how someone else thought the same thing as you and also stopped. Nice to know there are still a few good ones out there!

Me too, Paige, me too! :)

You’re really so kind towards that voiceless creature. I too love turtles a lot because I am a wildlife vet…

Thank you, Kadir and welcome to the Vaguetarian Tea Room. I see you have a lot of interesting information and resources about wildlife at your site. Please stop in anytime!

Awww,I’m a little upset now :( But you and the geek man are wonderful. hugs!

Sorry to make you sad, Hay. Sometimes it is cleansing though and makes me reflect on things. I just don’t allow myself to think about it for too long, gotta use that energy for good instead. Hugs right back at ya, my friend!

Awe, poor turtle but you are right it is nice to see someone so caring. I wish more people would go out of their way to lend a helping hand these days!

    Thanks, Talina! Me too! :)

Breeding season is very dangerous here. Hitting a turtle can easily flip most cars if you’re going pretty fast. I wish they had more turtle crossing signs or something.

More turtle crossing signs would be a good idea. I didn’t consider that but it probably IS mating season here. That might explain the sight of more turtles and why they’d want to be crossing the road. Thanks Honeywine! :)

Awww….poor turtle indeed, but it’s comforting to know that there’s some good in the world ;-)

    Thanks, Romi!

Aww, that was kind of you. I’m sorry you didn’t get there in time, but at least you tried! I have saved many turtles from the road. I remember driving home with a couple of them in the back seat! I’d bring them home so I could release them in the our backyard, far away from traffic.

The largest one I ever stopped for was a huge snapping turtle that my friend and I stopped traffic for. It was funny; the thing was too heavy for both of us and we were scared of it. About six different guys all rushed to our aid to get that thing off the road! (We were in college at the time!)

Hi Birdpress! Welcome to the Tea Room! I’m glad to be getting to know you and your mom better. That was nice of you to save so many turtles, especially the one you had to stop traffic for. LOL. I guess we are just saps for animals, huh? I bet those guys stopped more for you and your friend, but hey, you got their attention and that is the important thing. I once found a huge tortoise about to go into the road but I was afraid to try and lift it - another guy stopped and found out what I was doing and offered to go to his nearby home and get a shovel to lift it (we were afraid of it’s claws). Then, along came a young girl who pulled over in her SUV and didn’t even think twice, she walked right over to it, picked it up and brought it back into the woods. I guess she knew right where to put her hands so she didn’t get torn to pieces. The guy came back with his shovel and nothing to use it on. LOL. All’s well that ends well though. I love when humans work together like that. It gives me the warm fuzzies! :)

hahaha! my friends and i once saw a turtle on our way to the gym. this was still inside the uni premises and we just carried the turtle back to the pond near the gym. hahaha! he was heavy!

They sure can be quite heavy, Caryn! It amazes me - they are like little living boulders when it comes to weight! LOL
