Book Sentence Meme
Posted By Teeni on June 12, 2008
I was tagged by my bookish friend Merri, over at Merrily We Roll Along for a book meme. I’ve done a similar one before but this one is less involved (maybe the original mutated somewhere along the way). Anyway, I affectionately call Merri “bookish” because she even has a whole page dedicated to the books that she is currently reading and what she thinks of them - check her tabs and scroll down for the most recent. Also, my friend the Lady Thinker over at And Who Cares has also tagged me for this same meme. So I’m gonna be a good blog buddy and do it twice since it is such a simple and easy one.
Here are the rules:
Step One – pull out a book on the book shelf.
Step Two – go to page 123.
Step Three – read and write out the 5th sentence.
Step Four – tag 5 more people.
My first excerpt is from the book I’m currently reading:
“Suddenly, like a striking snake, she reached out and grabbed my hand in a fierce grip.”
-This is from the novel, The Other Boleyn Girl, by Philippa Gregory. I’m about half way through it and didn’t think I was going to love it all that much because it is a fictionalized period piece depicting the ambitions of a family to better their “place” in society, even aspiring to the throne itself. Anyway, I was soooooo wrong - I absolutely am loving this book. I thought parts would be boring, filled with history and ornate descriptions but it turns out it is really a page-turner!
I always like to read a book before seeing a movie and TGH and I will eventually see the movie but I can’t see that it could be better than the book in any way. I am now wanting to read more from this author.
My second excerpt is from the book I finished before starting The Other Boleyn Girl.
“Sorry,” the soldier on her left said, gruffly. “We can’t be too careful.”
-Yes, that was actually two sentences, but the first was so short! I couldn’t just leave off there. Anyway, this is from the book, The Deadliest Strain, by Jan Coffey. Jan Coffey is actually the pseudonyn for a husband and wife writing team, Jim and Nikoo McGoldrick, who are also fellow New Englanders. I believe this is the first book of theirs that I have read. I really enjoyed it. It combined horror, action, and interesting characters. It is about an aggressive flesh-eating disease that appears in the U.S. The disease kills its victims within an hour. Bioterrorism is suspected and time is of the essence to save the country. Although I could suspect where it was going at some points, there were still some surprises and it didn’t have the “typical” Hollywood happy ending. I enjoyed it and would read more from this couple as well.
Even though I did two books, I’m still only going to tag five people. If you can participate, then fantasic! I’d love to see what you are reading. If not, maybe you can save this one for a rainy day.
- The Poet Laura-eate
- Chip at Chip’s Quips
- Michael at Smoke & Mirrors
- Anna at Honeywine
- CowGalUtah at Cowgal Land

Thanks, Teeni! Here’s mine.
LOL. Wow. Didn’t I just post this? You are fast!
Hey, Teeni, do you want a giant feedburner icon like mine, only in your choice of colour?
Let me know.
You are always so nice to me! :)Hugs to you! And thanks for the icon!
i like this meme, it’s fun to read things out of context… The Other Boleyn Girl might be a good read… maybe on my year off….
I definitely recommend this one, Diva!
I love memes like this! I always find new books to read! LOL Im still on my classics kick right now lol
Oh, steal this meme, Calmity! I’d like to see what you are reading too!
I have heard of the movie The Other Boleyn Girl….I’ll have to get the book. I usually enjoy books much better than movies. I am a regular bookworm
OOoh, I so would have tagged you if I had known you were a bookworm! LOL. The book is a really good read (so far - I’m still in it!).
Uh…does Marie Claire count? lol I’m guessing Ethical Conflicts in Psychology wouldn’t be that interesting either. I may have to pick up one of my old favorites!
LOL. You can certainly use one of your old favorites! I’d be interested in seeing what you liked.
Oh, and yes the picture Tina is my sister.
We’re total opposites about most things.
Well, you and your sister Tina are both very pretty so you have that in common!
GOOD meme
THANKS kaylee!
I stole this and will post it soon, I like this meme!
Steal? Huh? What’s that? I didn’t see nothing. LOL. Help yourself Talina! I am interested in seeing your pick!
This is a cool idea and I want to read The Other Boleyn Girl now… Teeni, have a great weekend!
Thanks, Javaqueen! I think you’d like it! You have a great weekend too!
I enjoyed The Other Boleyn Girl and have yet to see the movie. I can get obsessed about reading books movies are based on. I recommend reading No Country For Old Men esp if you liked the movie. So are you new to Historical Fiction? it’s my favorite reading genre. I was fascinated at the back of the book TOBG when the i-view’d Ms Gregory and she talks abt how she approaches writing.
I haven’t gotten to the interview yet but can’t wait (well, yes, I can - I’m enjoying TOBG too much and don’t want it to end, LOL). Yes, it’s a new genre for me because I never thought I’d like it but I have been pleasantly surprised. I did see and read No Country for Old Men as well. I liked the book best but the movie was pretty good as far as sticking to the story. If you have any other recommendations, please let me know. I should put together a list so I don’t forget!
Ah well, at least it’s a mercifully short meme this time, so I guess I’ll forgive you!
Thanks Teeni - I’ll try and do it sometime next week. Been messing with my template today!
LOL. Yeup - it’s mercifully short and there is never any pressure so if you can get to it, then fantastic!
I hope your template does what you want - I’ll be by to check your changes as soon as I can.
I’m stealing this one too!!
I didn’t know that it was a book! But half of the movies are these days….
Oh cool! I will be by to check yours out. And yes, the movies are usually based on books but I always tend to like the books more. Nothing can beat the way you perceive things in your own head!
Thievery is abound on your blog today. I’m stealing it too. You may be the meme Queen so I guess that makes me the meme Princess. I love my memes. Did I tell you we used to call my Mom– Meme–pronounced meh-may. It was short for the French “Memere” which means grandma.
Now I have two more books to put on my reading list.
Wow - I had no idea so many of my blog buddies were “light-fingered.” LOL. But I’d have given it all to them if I’d known.
Oh, you know what is funny - for the longest time I was pronouncing meme like it rhymed with theme. I guess most people pronounced it as if they are saying “me” twice in rapid succession. But I’m not like most people I guess. Duh.
Great responses Teeni!
Love your first choice, that book sounds great!
I love books that pull one right in…
I always had a keen interest in Anne Boleyn..
(There is a fabulous OLD movie called, “Anne of a Thousand Days”..ever see it?)
The other book sounds interesting but right nightmare material too..lol
Thanks, Merri. The first one is extremely good. Oh, that Anne of a Thousand Days sounds good. I’ve never seen it but now have an interest in it. I didn’t think the other was too nightmarish but I’m a horror fan as well so I may have a warped sense of that stuff.
Drat..I forgot that I changed my email..lol
Oh, yes, you got stuck in my moderator because it didn’t recognize the email. But here I’ve saved you.
[...] and I almost forgot, Teeni over at Vaguetarian Tea Room has tagged me for a meme! It goes like [...]
Ah yes, I did this one a while ago. I didn’t really understand the point to it but it is quite nice to know what people are reading so I suppose that is what it is about. I’m a bit slow me - only just realised!!
LOL. I guess it is just to let others know what books you are reading and what you think of them. It may alert your buddies to other books they might find interesting. And hey, welcome to the club of slow people. I think I’m the president. LOL.
Jan Coffey is great. I’ve read a few books by Phillipa Gregory and unfortunately the trend of making women look stupid continues in her other books. I was especially disgruntled by her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth in The Virgin’s Lover. She took what I think of as a strong, fearsome woman and turned her into a simpering twit that couldn’t make a decision unless there was a man whispering in her ear.
Welcome to the Vaguetarian Tea Room, Memarie Lane! Oh, I didn’t think she was trying to display women as stupid but rather extremely frustrated at their inability to control their own destinies which was probably true of that husband-as-god-over-wife time period. But then, I haven’t finished this book yet and I haven’t read any of her others. I will keep what you said in mind moving forward and see what I think as I go along now. Ah, another Jan Coffey fan? I wonder what other books and authors you like. I will have to check your site out more and see if you’ve mentioned it.
I enjoy books with atypical endings. I will have to check it out.
If you do, I hope you enjoy it.
Yes, I am a huge reader. You can see what I’m currently reading in my sidebar. I love all types of books. Some of my favorite writers are Paulo Coehlo, John Irving, Toni Morrison, Christopher Buckley, Marian Keyes, Jane Austen, and Neil Gaiman. Always looking for new authors to read.
Awesome. I’m going to check out your sidebar.
I did this meme, I thought it was such a cool one. Do you belong to goodreads.com? If you are, friend me up! Joan Harvest is a member, Dragonfly, Little Miss, and Moonbeam McQueen. It’s fun, we list what we’re reading or have read and rate it, trade comments, etc. I blogged about it here:
http://awriterinthedesert.wordpress.com/2008/02/12/goodreads/
I don’t belong to goodreads.com but I will certainly look into it. My problem is I belong to things/join things and then never log into them. I am going to check your post about it though. It sounds interesting so maybe it will drag me in. And if I do, I’ll definitely freind you up!
