Teeni’s Tips - Put It In A Sock
Posted on June 23, 2008 - Filed Under Teeni's Tips
Don’t put a sock in it! Put it in a sock!
Whenever we replace TGH’s socks, I give the old ones a final laundering and then save them in a closet rag bag, even if they have holes or stains. You just never know when one will come in handy. They are a nice soft cotton - I should know since I usually end up wearing his socks rather than my own - so they make a great dust rag or spill-cleaner-upper.
Once you’ve found a use for them, they can either be tossed into the garbage or used again, depending on what you’ve done with them. I recently found a good use for one when I was using my everyday drink bottle but wanted to add ice cubes to it because it was so hot out. It’s a good sized bottle and I also wanteed to take it with me to visit relatives because I knew I wouldn’t finish the drink before we got there. I didn’t want the condensation from the ice to ruin anything so here’s what I did:
It might not be the most beautiful thing in the world, but it worked as well as any store-bought one and it felt good in my hand - I didn’t get wet or too cold holding it. Plus, I still have this part to keep and find another use for. (I’m now realizing how small this looks but it must be the angle of the camera.)
Every little bit counts, right?

Wicked! Good, that is.
Thanks, Witchypoo! I am wicked sometimes. Good, that is! Heehee.
LOL! You know me. A sweaty can is very messy. :p
I have beer koozies for that. Good idea though.
LOL. But MY koozie fits sizes 9-11. Can you say that about yours?
Wow, very ingenious!
Simple yet effective.
An interesting title, considering what I’m testing here
Testing … 1, 2, 3. Testing. Hey is this thing on?
Oh you are so clever Teeni. Never ever would have thought of that. Mind you, hubby wears black socks, not the sporty kind, wonder if it’d work as well.
I don’t see why not - you’d just have a different color! That’s good so you don’t accidentally grab MY drink!
Helloooo!
Yes, every little thing makes a difference. I’ve just done a very similar thing in sorting out odd socks. With three males in this house, it was driving me crazy!
Love the sock bottle, btw!
I’m not back blogging yet but I thought I’d pay a long overdue visit.
Hey Diane! It’s good to see you! Hugs, hugs, hugs! I hope you are well. Don’t forget to let me know when you come back to blogging so I can put you back in with the “live” links on my blogroll. Of course you are always welcome here even if you aren’t blogging though.
I never throw old clothes out - they go in the laundry and in the rag bag. And have been used for everything from dust rags to strips for garden too.
Annie
Wow. Annie, what do you use the strips in the garden for I wonder? I am still an amateur gardener.
The Red Hot Chili Peppers use old socks in the same way.
And by “in the same way”, I mean not the same way at all.
LOL. I think you and Evyl might have been thinking similarly.
Goodness, the bottle looks like it is almost ready to go jogging.
LOL. Yeah, it does. I almost wish TGH wore the kind with colored stripes on top so it would look more sporty. Nah. LOL
I’m sorry. I read the title and thought of something entirely unrelated to your post. I will recomment if I can ever get my mind out of the gutter.
Gotcha Evyl!
I love to have a little fun with my post titles. We will never recognize you if your mind comes out of the gutter!
Evyl mind in the gutter thats a surprise
sorry had to say it Evyl yes, I do read your blog!
Well, someone sounds like they are feeling pretty good. Hope you are well, Kaylee!
This is a test comment.
Yep, I use old socks for dusting. They’re perfect.
Yes, they are! So soft and easy to use. They fit over your hand like a glove if you want.
Fabulous idea Teeni! I have a whole whack of Jay’s old socks in the rag bag so this will be easy
Couldn’t get any easier. No sewing involved either - just snip away. Who wants to bother getting all fancy for just a koozy? But hey, you could if you wanted to!
Good idea! J hates when I keep stuff like that. He throws away everything. I use old socks for cleaning. I may try this idea because I always have an icy water bottle in my bag for work!
Men are weird. LOL. I bet it works great for your icy water bottle and if it gets too wet after a while, you can always toss it in the dryer. I’ve been using mine for four or five days in a row then tossing in the dryer or just letting it hang out to dry. It’s only condensation water, after all.
I’ve used old socks for dusting or using Pledge for the spindals on the stairway railing. Like Writer Chick said up above, no clothes get thrown out, they just get used for rags. I tear them up and put them in a bag next to my tool chest. When I am checking oil on the cars, painting or needing a dust rag, they are always there.
Sometimes, if it is an old shirt, it will bring back memories.
I forgot about checking oil in the cars - they are fabulous for that! And railings! Great ideas. Now I feel bad about not dusting in so long. LOL. I better go get some housework done!
see? thats why chicks rock. I would never think to do things like that with old socks.
or new socks.
or anything, really…
LOL. Yeup - there’s more to socks than just puppets!
You never cease to amaze me lady.
Sorry i haven’t been around much… work work work… getting ready for mat leave, getting ready for the new girl… blah blah blah.
Forgive me??
You have no need for forgiveness as you’ve done nothing wrong my lovely mother-in-waiting friend! I do miss you of course, but I’m happy knowing you are in good hands with B-rad and that the reasons that you haven’t been around are happy ones! That’s the most important thing. I know you’ll come around when you can and I always welcome you!!!! Hugs to you. I can’t believe it - maternity leave is almost upon you! Things are speeding right along! I can’t wait for you to be able to show the world your little creation.
This is a test comment too.
LOL. Do you always comment as soon as I walk away? Are you avoiding me?
Wow! Another fantastic idea!! Usually as soon as Cam gets a big hole in his sock I rip it, otherwise he’ll wear it forever!! i like the idea about using them to clean up spills!! Maybe then my kids would leave my dishclothes and towels alone so they’ll be there when I need them!!
Oh, I can never find one of my dishcloths when I need one either. And I have plenty - I used a couple each day and throw them in the laundry each night. It saves on paper towels and such, plus the old socks can be used for lots of things. Good idea to rip the sock as soon as you see a hole - TGH would wear them forever too!
What a great way to recycle. I wouldn’t have thought of that in a million years.
That’s why it took my uncommonly simple mind to think it up for you! LOL!
That is a fine idea! I think I’ve seen something like that before for baby bottles, but I guess it would have had to be with kid’s sizes.
Oh, I had no idea they had something similar for baby bottles. I don’t have kids or baby bottles though so I should be excused from knowing that.
But little kids socks would be so cute on a bottle!!! Those little lacey ones with ribbons and stuff.
Teeni, this is GREAT! I love to recycle things. And yes, every little bit HELPS!
You just gave me an idea to post a good idea that I have……
Just love my Teeni Friend
You are sweet and I’m glad I could inspire an idea. I can’t wait to check yours out!
i love the idea!!!
i used to wrap my icy water bottle in a small towel, and it takes up all the space in my bag.
Oh, good - the sock should take up less space for you then!
I hope it works out for you!
Great idea. I keep a sock on my stick shift so it doesn’t get hot.
Another fantastic idea! Thanks for sharing that, Memarie! These things are handier than I thought!
