My Tearjerker Song Meme

Posted By Teeni on August 5, 2008

I was tagged by my friend, Wendy at Life With Buck, to do a meme of a song that makes you cry! Really! Okay, well it doesn’t have to make you physically cry, but it needs to be one that really touches you or hits home somehow. I’ve seen a lot of people’s responses to this one and what great songs they came up with! I hadn’t thought of many of them but they were all very touching. According to Wendy, Little Miss Sew and Sew (perhaps unintentionally) came up with this meme when she put up this post. Anyway, it is spreading around the blogosphere and is another neat little meme. Here was my pic of song that nearly brings me to tears.

I don’t know if it is the angelic voice of Lulu, or the lyrics, or just the idea of goodbye, or that I loved the movie so much. But I really always thought this was a beautiful song. Here is Lulu singing it more recently on American Idol. She’s still a looker (actually even better than she ever looked - yes, I’m jealous. I think she is like Tina Turner only blonde)! LOL, but seriously.

And now that I think of it, the lead singer from Duffy reminds me of Lulu in a way. But I digress.

I am now interested in seeing what the following people would choose as a song that really gets to them.

Anna at Honeywine
Dan at dcrblogs
Diane at A Northern Slant on Life
Kaylee
Mike at Exit 78
Paige at Eat, Bitch & Whine
Talina at Harvest of Daily Life if she can fit it in
Tish at the Kat House

If anyone else has not been tagged but would like to steal this, please do but please link back so I can follow and see what you chose! Thanks! :)

The no fail cry song for me is Mike and the Mechanics “The Living Years”
    Every single time.
    Damnit.

Oh, that IS a tearjerker! Even just the music is haunting in that one!

  2. Paige Stanton (100 comments.) says:

Aw crap you tagged me?! I’ll have to do some thinking…

Sorry. LOL. But I don’t want your brain atrophying or anything. And I left you some people to tag. Cuz I’m nice like that. :)

I don’t do Memes so I’ll just say what one I think really tugs at the heart, and that is the song Eric Clapton wrote/sang/composed called Tears In Heaven which he wrote for his dead Son.

    Aww. Great choice, Mac. **sniff**

  4. Sterling "Chip" Camden (61 comments.) says:

Tears in Heaven => me crying.

Wow. Well, that’s two for that song! That one really does tug at the heart though. I have to agree.

  5. writerchick (34 comments.) says:

Aw, Teens, that was a sweet song. For me, nothing jumps off the top of my head but it would probably be an obscure Irish rebel song.

    Annie

Oh wow. An obscure Irish rebel song, huh? I never would have guessed. But hey, that’s the purpose of these memes - we get to find out a little more about each other. :)

  6. sheng (57 comments.) says:

Well, the song is good, but how come I did not cry, I guess was just too insensitive to listen to it wholeheartedly, forgive me.

But anyways, I really don’t have a good song to celebrate tearjerkers with, but you may look for 214 by Rivermaya and it sure blows my mind off.

Well, maybe the song just means more to me because of the movie. Plus, everything affects people differently. I have never heard of 214 by Rivermaya so I will have to look for it! :)

i am not deletting just taking a little break :) and I will do this soon :P

Good - glad to hear it! Let me know when you get around to it.

  8. Bethy (41 comments.) says:

She has a great voice. I am a bit tired to really think of the best choice of song that makes me cry but “Everything’s Different Now” by Innocence Mission comes to mind. But I wouldn’t call it a tear jerker song. Anyways, g’nite!

Well, you know I know nothing about music and had to look this up. I did find the lyrics but no music on youtube although there was plenty of other stuff by Innocence Mission there, just not this song it seems. Figures.

  9. Michelle Gartner (53 comments.) says:

I cry when I hear anything by Madonna, Britney Spears or that Cyrus kid… it’s like cutting onions when I hear those chicks sing. HA HA HA HA

OMG - Too funny! Michelle, TGH told me he was gonna post a comment like this - it’s the same almost word for word. You and he think alike. I guess you are just both brilliant. :)

  10. kaylee (456 comments.) says:

But teeni I am in the hospital again so if i take a few days to do it don’t send anyone after me. ;)

Then get well and out of there quick as you can - don’t make me come over there!

It’s hard when I’m caught off guard by a song that brings me to a certain time in my life or a person. Especially my dad. He passed in Dec ‘04 and I think I wrote about this but anytime I hear any sort of heartfelt song, I think of him, sometimes tear up- Especially Elton John, or someone that he loved. This is a hard meme! But you pulled it off

Aw, I hear you about your dad, JQ. People who have had such a prominent place in your life are definitely going to come to mind when you hear a heartfelt song - that’s for sure. So sorry for your loss. Hugs to you!

  12. Slyde (128 comments.) says:

    Thats a really tough one.

Probably Howard Jones “no one ever is to blame”, for alot of reasons from long ago when i was much younger and MUCH more naive..

Oh, that’s another good one. Hauntingly pretty and sad music too.

  13. kaylee (456 comments.) says:

I will let you Know yes, I will get out quickly. Just gotta get this stupid infection taken care of first!

Okay, no rush. First things first!

  14. Talina (118 comments.) says:

Oh, this one will be easy if I can find the song on youtube… I get it done tonight.

No pressure. Looking forward to seeing your pick though. :)

  15. Leaf, pobably.com (30 comments.) says:

You know last night I actually went in search of a song to make me cry, and I couldn’t find ONE! I think I’m going to have to devote some time to finding crying songs.

Aw, Leaf! I didn’t want to really make you cry. Just want to know what song might have that effect on you.

  16. iamthediva (126 comments.) says:

Okay, i wasn’t tagged - but i did it anyway! Also, i love love LOVE “To Sir With Love”. My dad went out of his way when i was a kid to find a video of the movie so he could show me this song. I loved the sound of her voice and wanted to learn the song so i held my little tape player up to the tv and recorded the song so that when my dad returned the video i could still have a copy of it. i played the tape over and over again and i’m pleased to say that i still remember all the words. i probably will for the rest of my life. :)

    Nice pick.

Thanks, Diva. Aw, I’m so glad your dad turned you on to such a great song and a great movie. And I’m so glad you did the meme! I’m gonna go check your choice … NOW! **whooshes out the door**

  17. [...] Teeni tagged me for a meme the other day, and I think this is an appropriate time to tell ya’ll about the song that makes me cry.  “Sometimes Love Just Ain’t Enough” is an old song and it’s hard to find.  Don Henley and Patty Smyth did it as a duet in 1992.  Here are the lyrics: [...]

Thank you - I really enjoyed this because 1. I actually listened to the words, ya know? I knew this song only superficially. ah, there’s no 2. Hmmmm…

Also, thank you for being you and yes - you are right.

    Hugs, Smiles, “C”

This is so sweet. Thanks, C! And whoa - wait a minute - stop the presses! I was right about something? Really? What was I right about?

I unabashedly care about my country and many of the tunes that will bring tears to my eyes are related to that, especially during periods where the true values of the nation are being tested, such as the Oklahoma City bombing and September 11, 2001.

I’m not too great a memes, especially music related ones, so I’ll just respond in your comments. Besides, that’s outside of my “comfort zone” in a direction I’m not ready to travel.

LOL. That’s okay, you are always welcome to respond to memes in the comments area. I can tell you are a patriotic soul, Mike so I get you when you say the songs about your country are the ones that would bring tears to your eyes. Yeah, but I know you’re coming out of your comfort zone. ;)

  20. Wendy (28 comments.) says:

Oh I love it! I forgot all about that song! It gets to me, too. I think it’s the way she sings it. The original was so poignant it really got to people, and then when she came out on American Idol all grown up and did a grown up version of it, well it just gave me goosebumps. Her grown up version was so powerful, no regrets. She’s fantastic. Thanks for doing this meme, and for reminding us of this great song and adorable Lulu!

That was a cool meme. I enjoyed it. So many songs I had not heard in a long time. And all of them are very touching. That Lulu - she is adorable isn’t she? :)

I remember when “To Sir With Love ” came out in the theater. It was the year I graduated from high school 1967. My girl friend and I loved it. We saw it like 5 times.

She still does a great job singing it and certainly looks hot.

I actually watched the movie fairly recently. I still love it.

I still love it too. I have caught bits and pieces of the movie but would love to sit and watch the whole thing from start to finish again. :)

I’ll share the song next time we connect. :)

    Okay, sounds good.

Yes, I think Duffy is the lead singer’s name but I’m not sure if that is also the name of her band? There are other members but I don’t know much about her. I do like her songs though. :)

Diane, where is your blog? I’d love to visit and see what songs you posted! ;)

Annie certainly is a sweetie. Sorry, Di - I think you’ve actually told me where to find you before and I forgot. It’s the chemo brain that makes my memory a mess. I’ll try to remember from now on but I don’t know why it doesn’t show up in the URL when you comment here.
