The Vaguetarian Two Hundred

Posted on September 6, 2008 - Filed Under Meme

I’ve been tagged by Jen at Embracing the Chaos to do the Omnivore’s 100 Food List Meme.  I’ve also been seeing the Vegan 100 Food List Meme going around, most recently on VeggieGirl’s blog.  So I did the most sensible thing and I stole it from her so I could do both!  I can do this because I’m a certifiable Vaguetarian.   ;)   I hope your wrists are ready to roll that mouse down.  Some of the entries are the same between lists.  But that’s not my fault - I didn’t make the lists.  I had to look up some of these because I didn’t know what they were!  As for tagging on this one, since I’ve seen it around so much and been late in doing it myself, I can’t think who else hasn’t done it.  But if you haven’t done it and would like to or if you’ve done one and not the other, then maybe you would like to do a little switcheroo or do both!  I’d love to read what you come up with.

The instructions are pretty much the same for both lists:

1) Copy this list into your blog or journal, including these instructions.
2) Bold all the items you’ve eaten.
3) Cross out any items that you would never consider eating.
4) Optional extra: Post a comment here at www.verygoodtaste.co.uk linking to your results.

Now, without further ado, here’s my completed Omnivore’s 100 Food List.

1. Venison - I did not like it at all
2. Nettle tea - I’ve had nettles in my tea blends but not just plain Nettle tea.
3. Huevos rancheros
4. Steak tartare
5. Crocodile
6. Black pudding
7. Cheese fondue
8. Carp
9. Borscht - I’ve had the tomato based one, not the beet one
10. Baba ghanoush
11. Calamari

30. Bagna cauda - no but I’ve had similar stuff without anchovies in it - yummy
31. Wasabi peas - love these guys.  Yum.
32. Clam chowder in a sourdough bowl - But not together.  I’m not a big fan of clam chowder though I love corn chowder.  And the bread boules I can live without too.  One little piece of bread is better than a whole bowl made of it.
33. Salted lassi - I only drink yogurt in smoothies.
34. Sauerkraut
35. Root beer float
36. Cognac with a fat cigar
37. Clotted cream tea
38. Vodka jelly/Jell-O - why when there are such fun things as jello shots?

42. Whole insects
43. Phaal - Not a big curry fan
44. Goat’s milk
45. Malt whisky from a bottle worth £60/$120 or more
46. Fugu - no pufferfish for me.  I don’t want to risk it.

60. Carob chips
61. S’mores
62. Sweetbreads - again, no organ meats, thank you
63. Kaolin - I go out of my way to not eat rocks and clay but if it is a mineral already in some other food then I’ll probably eat it.
64. Currywurst - never tried this spicy sausage but I’d be willing to give it a taste.
65. Durian - considering the expense and the fact that it is not local AND that it smells, I don’t think I want to try it because what if I end up LIKING it?  I’m better off without it.  ;)

68. Haggis
69. Fried plantain
70. Chitterlings, or andouillette
71. Gazpacho

73. Louche absinthe
74. Gjetost, or brunost - I don’t eat cheese I can’t pronounce and brown is not a good color for cheese. ;)

79. Lapsang souchong

84. Tasting menu at a three-Michelin-star restaurant.  - What do I care what a tire rates a restaurant?  ;)
85. Kobe beef - So named because probably only Kobe Bryant can afford it.  ;)
86. Hare - Nor tortoise, neither

89. Horse
90. Criollo chocolate
91. Spam
92. Soft shell crab

94. Catfish
95. Mole poblano
96. Bagel and lox - I’ve had bagels but without the salmon - I’ve had the smoked salmon other ways and liked it though
97. Lobster Thermidor - no.  I’m not even a big lobster fan but I would never eat it this way.  We New Englanders like our lobstah steamed and dipped in buttah - no fancy crap to cover up the flavah.

20. Vanilla ice cream - I’ve had non vegan ice cream and rice cream which was really good.
21. Heirloom tomatoes
22. Fresh wild berries
23. Ceviche - This is a seafood dish so I’m not sure why it’s on this list either.
24. Rice and beans
25. Knish
26. Raw scotch bonnet pepper
27. Dulce de leche - again with the animal products on a vegan list.

What a list, Teeni. I don’t even know what half of the stuff up there is!

Poutine…oh my, I miss that. So yummy!

    Is haggis vegan?

Oh, BD, I think there is a vegan version of haggis but honestly, I don’t think I care to try either one. I don’t judge anyone if they like it, but it just doesn’t sound appealing to me no matter which way it is made. And well, fortunately there’s plenty of other stuff to eat so… LOL.

I only got as far as #3 and I felt compelled to respond.

Huevos Rancheros are the food from the Gods!!!

My favorite food ever. Now back to your post.

LOL. I admit that I like eggs almost any style!

  3. kilax (34 comments.) on September 7th, 2008 12:46 am

I am happy to hear their is a vegan list! I saw the other one going around and felt a bit left out. Ha ha.

LOL. Feel free to steal a list or two and go to town with it, kilax! It’s fun!

  4. Hay (58 comments.) on September 7th, 2008 4:09 am

Wow Teeni, you have a seriously adventurous palate. Now I need to Google about 75 things…hmmm :)

LOL - Don’t feel bad, Hay - I had to google a lot of them myself. The scary thing is I googled some and then realized I had actually had them before. LOL.

  5. Jen (8 comments.) on September 7th, 2008 4:56 am

Mmmm…the vegan list looks yummy! I definitely need to do some serious cooking today :-)

LOL. The only problem with doing these lists is that they can seriously make you hungry staring at those food names for so long. ;)

  6. VeggieGirl (87 comments.) on September 7th, 2008 6:31 am

Haha, I LOVE how you combined both lists, Teeni!! So fun!! :-)

Thanks, VeggieGirl - it was fun to do them both. :)

  7. DragonLady (46 comments.) on September 7th, 2008 6:58 am

LOL, I have so many comments to make I might as well just do the 2 lists. Sounds like a fun thing to do this afternoon while I’m doing laundry. ;-)

Enjoy, DL! But make sure you have a healthy snack nearby or the desire to be bad will certainly be tempting you! LOL

  8. odette (52 comments.) on September 7th, 2008 7:11 am

wow what a list! i don’t recognize most of them though, so it’s nice to meet food names i haven’t known before. :)

I had to look a lot of them up too! But it was fun and I learned a little bit! :)

  9. TGH on September 7th, 2008 7:51 am

Me being the picky one, I’m surprised I’ve had something from the lists Teenie hasn’t, mole poblano. Oh, and I can’t believe they made a vegetarian scrapple. It must have been priceless to see our faces when we had a waitress explain to us what regular scrapple was. Blech.

Oh, I didn’t realize you had something I didn’t. Wow! LOL. And yeah, although I’m sure scrapple tastes great (many people love it), it just didn’t sound appetizing when our waitress explained it to us. Leftover meats all put together, etc. So I would say it’s a lot like sausage that way. Although I’ve had sausage and I do like some sausage very much, but when someone reminds me what it is made out of, it grosses me out. So there’s been a major decline in the amount of sausage I eat to almost nil.

    You definitely need to try,

    74. Gjetost, or brunost - I don’t eat cheese I can’t pronounce and brown is not a good color for cheese.

It is quite delicious even though it is brown. It has a slight sweet taste. It is brown because during the cooking process, the sugars caramelize.

Hmmm. Well, okay, as long as I have you to speak for it, then I’m willing to give it a try. Usually, I’m not that closed minded about food but I looked this one up and saw the picture and that turned me off. I should know better than to judge my food by the cover though so maybe I will give this a try (if I can find it now)! LOL. Do you know how to pronounce it? If you do, fill me in! :) Oh - I suppose I could look up how to pronounce it too. **smacks self in forehead**

  11. Karen (17 comments.) on September 7th, 2008 10:31 am

I have not had huevos rancheros, but I did have huevos a al mexicana–scrambled eggs with fresh jalapeno peppers in them, and they were good and hot!

Those sound delicious too! I’ve heard of huevos rancheros being done with scrambled eggs also. A little bit of spice is good, huh? ;)

  12. B.E. Earl (73 comments.) on September 7th, 2008 10:38 am

I’ve actually done a menu tasting at a Michelin 3-star restaurant. Per se in NYC. It was fantastic, but way too expensive. I preferred the tasting at Bouley, another fabu restaurant in NYC.

Well, I’d take your word for it over a tire, anyday! LOL. I would like to try some of those restaurants. Maybe TGH and I will have to plan a trip to NYC soon.

  13. writerchick (31 comments.) on September 7th, 2008 11:37 am

Jeez Teens, what a list. Some of this stuff sounds like exotic insect life more than food. I’ve never heard of about half of them. Though, I have tried most of what you have tried. Interesting what we humans can consider food though, eh?
    Annie

LOL. You said it, Annie - exotic insect life. Certainly not what I want on my menu. ;) Here’s my new saying: “One man’s delicacy is another man’s disgust.” ;)

  14. colbymarshall (7 comments.) on September 7th, 2008 1:34 pm

I agree with some of these others…I don’t even know what some of this stuff is! I DO know that I don’t like peanut butter, though.

Peanut butter is usually a safe bet unless you are allergic! At least it is almost universally recognizable! LOL. Welcome to the Vaguetarian Tea Room, Colby! Nice to meet ya! :)

  15. witchypoo (123 comments.) on September 7th, 2008 2:50 pm

I’m glad I stuffed my piehole with carrot cake before reading this!

Yeah, it’s a good idea to have some healthy snacks on hand if you want to complete these lists. LOL.

  16. Hannah (372 comments.) on September 7th, 2008 5:30 pm

Well, you have certainly tried a lot more “unusual” things than me!! But you REALLY need to try Marmite & Vegemite … I will try and remember to get some and send it to you. It’s Vegan so you have no excuse!!

And Eggs Benedict … that’s so yummy! I can’t believe you haven’t tried it before.
Chilli Chocolate is also VERY good. Mmmmm.

You will have to instruct me in how to eat Marmite & Vegemite if you do send it because I don’t want to look like an idiot and just be sticking a spoon in it if that isn’t how you eat it. ;) I think I actually tried Eggs Benedict but didn’t like the sauce on it. I don’t know why I didn’t bold that one. My mistake. I do need to try chilli chocolate though - you are not the first to tell me how good it is. So I need to get my hands on some. :)

  17. Beth Ellen (217 comments.) on September 8th, 2008 2:54 am

Oh, cognac with a fat cigar…there’s me.

Haha - in your smoking jacket and all, huh? ;)

  18. cow gal (23 comments.) on September 8th, 2008 3:32 pm

I love it…in fact if I find the time I may just do this on my page.

Go for it, Cowgal! I bet you’ve had some stuff I haven’t had. Nice to see ya, by the way! :)

  19. Ariell (58 comments.) on September 8th, 2008 6:40 pm

I have no idea how to pronounce; I just refer to it as ‘that brown Norwejian cheese.’

LOL. Okay, that’s good enough for me. I can say that. :)

  20. Hannah (372 comments.) on September 10th, 2008 2:10 am

You basically eat Vegemite and Marmite on toast or bread. Spread toast or bread with butter/margarine and then with V or M. Simple as that! Actually, one of the quintessential Kiwi ways to eat Marmite (Vegemite is Australian, LOL) is to have it on a sandwich with pototo chips (crisps I think you call them). Really YUM!

Other people do things like add it to mashed potatoes, or make savoury scone thingies.

Okay - I think I could handle that! LOL. It would just be like me to put it on ice cream or something and totally experience it all wrong. ;) Thanks Hannah. At least now I know how to eat it! :)
