Twittering and Polling
Posted on September 13, 2008 - Filed Under Site Info
It’s been quiet over here a bit because I’ve been playing around with some applications on my blog. Since I’m not so technical, it has required all of my attention.
First, I decided to try Twitter out again. I’m not really sure about this Twittering thing. I gave it up after a quick first trial last year because it seemed useless to me. I blog to keep everyone up to date and Twittering seemed like so much overkill. Since I’m not twittering from a mobile phone or instant messenger, I’m actually using the same computer I blog from so that means I need to be signed into yet another application and I may as well just blog. But I’m giving it another try to see if I like it now that I’m not feeling so overwhelmed. But the weird thing to me is that immediately after I made my tweets (is that what you call them? What am I a bird?) public instead of private, someone who I don’t even know signed on to follow me. I don’t get that at all. Why the heck would anyone want to know what someone they don’t even know is doing in short little spurts of text? That kind of freaks me out.
Second, I’ve added a poll widget on my site to test it out for a future purpose. So I figured I may as well put it to use and gather some info while I’m testing it out. Feel free to help me out and answer the poll. May as well kill two birds with one stone. Sheesh, killing two birds with a stone? Where on earth did that saying come from? It’s mean. And probably not very easy.

I just don’t “get” Twitter. But perhaps I’m like all those people who initially didn’t “get” Facebook. Now everyone and their dog is on FB.
I do like your poll! I voted for more Teeni tips, because I learn so much from you! I see that has been a popular answer so far
LOL@ dogs on Facebook. I think that is why I’m giving Twitter another chance. Just to see if I initially didn’t “get” it. And yeah, I was surprised about the Teeni’s Tips so far.
I really love the twitter feature. I set one up on my blog and then it simply stopped working. I voted for Teeni tips. Yay for those, keep ‘um coming.
I actually like seeing what people are “up to” by the minute/hour/day whatever, I think it’s fun and maybe that’s why I’m sorta loving F.B. I really despised facebook to begin with - but I do like that feature.
I give ya mad props on the new apps
Wow - I wonder why your twitter thing stopped working? Weird. I’ll give it a little more respectable amount of time before I make my decision on it. Thanks for the kind words and for taking the time to vote.
I twitter from work on my cell phone. I send updates from work. It’s kind of useless, but there is just something addicting.
It’s funny to me how some people find it addicting to write their tweets and others seem addicted to reading them.
I twitter. Useless, but fun. And I’ve gotten some really good links out of it (when people post news links on there) sometimes before the news is even announced where I am.
I LOVE polls.
Hmm, the news thing is interesting - that alone may make it worthwhile to keep. I didn’t know so many people liked polls. Well, hopefully this will help me keep my blog interesting.
I twitter so I can see what Mac is cooking. LOL But, I don’t have it on my cell phone either. I have the TwitterFox plugin in Firefox, and I’ll post stuff on it just to be silly. Little short things that aren’t worth the effort to log in and blog about.
So, yeah, useless time-waster, but kind of addictive too.
See that, Mac? DL wants to know you are eating okay. LOL. Oh, I will have to check out the TwitterFox plugin for Firefox. I didn’t even know it existed. Thanks!
Twitter…? Sounds like something for twits
Seriously, it’s not something that I’ve considered for much longer than it would take to twit a single message. To me, it seems like another distraction I don’t need…, but then, I don’t do facebook or myspace.
I’m not knocking it for other people, but it’s not for me.
That was my initial feeling on the whole thing too, but I’m giving it another shot because I don’t think I gave it a fair trial before since I felt very overwhelmed at the time I first considered it. I’ll let you know on whether I will keep it or not in the near future.
I haven’t a twitter what twitter is. But I am always up for something new. I like the poll thing. I love your tips but I did vote for Marie. I mean we sort of left her on a unicorn sounding like some kind of a nut so I would like to see what happens to her next.
You always have something cool going on here and it really doesn’t matter what you do because I will always be here.
Aww, you are awesome - thanks for the heartwarming comment.
And I know what you mean about Marie - I have been feeling so guilty for leaving her that way. I’m working on getting her story around right now (finally).
I joined twitter a while back but I really didn’t see what it was good for or what it is supposed to do. I’m glad to know I ain’t the only one. I like putting polls on my blog, too.
LOL - yes, I’m glad I’m not alone too! And yeah, I can definitely see that poll thing coming in handy!
I have never tried Twitter and I am on Facebook but found after an initial spurt of activity there I quickly tired of it but I keep it open for certain contacts. It is alot of meaningless busywork. lol
Yeah, I feel that way about Facebook too. “Meaningless busywork,” is a good description. It’s like one of the things we used to do in the office to look busy but really it was just virtual pencil pushing to kill time. LOL.
I’m illiter-twitter-ate.
And I didn’t vote, because I like just about everything you put out.
I you put out anything I’m not really into, it probably wasn’t intended for me anyway.
Ha! I like that - “illiter-twitter-ate!” Good one, Spidey! What a sweet comment. Flattery will get you somewhere! I’ll keep up with the “putting out” just for you! LOL.
It would seem I missed an “f” in my last comment. I hate it when that happens.
It’s okay - happens to all of us. And actually, it’s pretty rare from you I think. I loved your comment anyway and will treasure it just as it is.
I voted for cartoons. I can never get too many cartoons.
Thanks for taking the time to vote, Evyl. I am hoping to get better at translating ideas into cartoons.
Hey! I am on Twitter too…I didn’t get it at first either but now I often update on there with stuff that I wouldn’t do a whole post about on the blob (as my Dad calls it).
Off to email you!
Blob? LOL. That is too funny. Although, they are really kind of a blob of sorts. A blob of thoughts, written down. Your dad is awesome.
I never paid much attention to Twitter, and certainly never used it myself. I feel like I’d have to be pretty full of myself to think anyone would really care that much about what I’m doing or thinking! (No offense to you or other Twitter users! I’m sure there are other reasons/uses for it.)
I also voted for more tips!
LOL - No offense taken as that’s really how I was feeling too. I’m giving it the old school try one last time though. And thanks for taking the time to vote!
Personally, I would not be caught dead on twitter. I have enough grief to handle without constant information raining on my parade and my comments raining on other people’s parades!
I’m glad to find I wasn’t the only one feeling that way about it.
I am not into twitter, but honestly, I haven’t tried it. I kind of think it is overkill too. But I can see how it would become addictive!
Yeah, it seems lately that all things related to the internet and technology have that addictive quality, don’t they? I wonder if they plan that when they are designing these things or if it is merely accidental?
@teeni…, It’s purely accidental. They build it and hope people come. They’d like it to be addictive, but for every one of these that take off, there’s probably hundreds that don’t make it.
Good points, Mike. I bet that IS true. There must be a little virtual graveyard for unsuccessful applications. I think that is where I should send Dan’s avatar. LOL.
I had a follower even before I was on Twitter. Don’t know how that happened, but it did! I signed up for Twitter and, poof!, there was already a follower. And, I know he didn’t just happen to follow me as I signed up, since his blog hasn’t even been updated in months and he’s gone AWOL.
That’s kind of freaky. What did you DO to him?
i don’t twitter and don’t really have time for another electronic addiction! good luck though!
I can totally respect that, Natalie. I don’t need another addiction either. I’ll keep you all posted on my trial though.
I reviewed his blog. It’s the kiss of death. Would you like your blog reviewed?
They follow you in the hopes that you will follow them. He who has the most followers wins.
Arggh! No thanks - please DON’T review me!
That’s funny that they do that in hopes that I’ll follow them - I just go check their profile but I don’t follow them.
I don’t like Twitter. Not one bit.
PS - that was me that voted for “Nekkid pics”, by the way. But you probably knew that.
LOL. I knew I shouldn’t have left that “other” option there for you!
Know what you mean about feeling ovewhelmed sometimes Teeni & can hardly keep up with the dozen or so applications I already have so I take my hat off to you for braving the vagaries of Twitter. The dumb name puts me off as much as anything, but that’s pretty creepy that you immediately attract ‘followers’ who presumably know nothing about you and have not had time to check out your blog either.
At this rate of innovation none of us will have time to live real life any longer though!
Yeah, it does get hard squeezing in time for real life.
And to think, most of these things were supposed to make our lives easier.
maybe… no wait, i just don’t understand twitter!
LOL. I’d rather get blog posts from you anyway - I want to hear all the description of your adventure and twitter doesn’t give nearly enough space for that!
I am not big on twitter or plurk either… Blogging is just fine for me.
As for your quiz, I like your diary type posts and of course the story game. I noticed you didn’t have your diary posts on the quiz.
Hi Talina! This was my first poll thingy and I didn’t really know how to categorize some of my posts. If by diary posts, you mean just the ones where I ramble about my thoughts in general, there are plenty of those coming too.
Thanks for your input, I appreciate it!
Hey!. Not totally agree with you, but you just gave me an idea for a new eBook regarding “hocolate? | Vaguetarian Tea Room”. It is related to chocolate substitutes. Thanks.
Wow - what a coincidence! I totally don’t agree with you one bit. Your idea really stinks but I think I will write a book and call it “Vaguetarian Tea Room | Chocolate Substitute.” It will discuss really stupid spam comments and it will demonstrate how my blog can be as addicting as chocolate. No, thank YOU!
I don’t really twitter myself- I have it linked to my blog for twitterfeed or whatever that application is… about the only time I go on is when I have a new follower. I too find it weird that people would wan to follow me.
LOL. So it sounds like it is not really doing much for you, then?
I think the ‘two birds one stone’ saying originated from back in the 1830’s when there was a worldwide stone shortage… In those days you had to really make sure you got your money’s worth out of your stone.
LMAO! Oh, Leaf - you are so funny. When I first started reading your comment I thought it was going to be a real history of the phrase and I thought, “Whoa, she’s getting all technical on me.” But then I read the rest of it and I really like your history better! Fortunately, there is no such shortage of rocks these days (I didn’t know they could multiply but judging by my backyard, they definitely CAN). So these days we can afford to splurge on one for each bird probably.
Thanks for the giggle, Leaf!
Well, I think we must breathe the same air or something, because I was going to post about twitter next.
It took me ages to get into - but I have now and I do use it in a different way to my blog. I find though that Twitter rather makes my life feel trivial and banal, whereas blogger makes it feel more dramatic. Twitter reduces life to its smallest pieces. Initially I also found that if I said something like “feeling grumpy today” the act of writing it make me fix it for the rest of the day - that I felt obliged to stay grumpy even though it may only have been a passing phase.
But I do like Twitter.
Have you tried Plurk?
I think my problem is that I just can’t take certain things seriously. All my tweets will probably be goofy and I’ll probably end up annoying some people but maybe making some laugh too. Who knows? I guess it is good though to know your limits and to know yourself well enough that you recognize when something is affecting you negatively. If I find that what I write affects how I feel for the rest of the day then it is gone! Well, unless it affects me in a good way, that is.
I have to admit that I have not tried Plurk. I have heard of it and that is about all. I’ve never seen it either. If you have any info or advice on it for me let me know - maybe I’ll do a Plurk experiment in the future too.
Oh, I will be interested to see what you have to post about twitter!
Hi there. Got here from JQ.
I have a twitter account but I dont really update. I find plurking more interesting.
Oh I voted to for more teeni tips. It’s cool!
Nice to meet you, Jhen and welcome to the Vaguetarian Tea Room. I was at your other site so I stole that spelling of your name there. I hope you don’t mind. I love it - it is very unique. JQ is a fun and wonderful person. I’m happy to have you here.
I’m another that doesn’t “get” twitter - although it is funny to see what people are saying when they have it on their blogs! I spend too much time on blogs anyway, so really, really do not need some other form of the same thing. But you have fun…. I can see there are lots of people who enjoy twittering
Thanks, Kelly! I’m not sure if the Twitter thing is here to stay but I’ll give it a fair trial before I decide one way or the other. And I know what you mean about spending too much time blogging. LOL. I’m adding you to my reader so I can keep up with you too!
hahaha, it’s true, no one should kill two birds with a stone…use a gun…lol
(just joking! But then again I eat chicken, so I ain’t no saint….
)
LOL. Good one, Romi. And I eat chicken too so I guess I’m no saint either. Too bad it wasn’t that easy though, huh?
Incidentally, I submitted my two bits on your survey widget. Quite interesting that.
Thanks for the input, Rummy. The poll is a free widget available at polldaddy.com if you are interested.
I don’t know. If I had high speed, I might be tempted on boring days. But I’d have to tell people about things like the fit of my panties and the length of my armpit hair. So it’s probably best that I don’t twitter. lol
LOL. I’m afraid I may go down that path myself. Today they’re a little tight but the armpits are cleanshaven, for now, anyway.
i just got “get” twitter… it must be a sign that im too old… i just dont see a use for it, and i never will, i fear…
For my purposes, I really am not seeing a need for it either. I think for some it is fun. But I’m not about to start twittering from a phone or any other device so I don’t think this thing has much of a future with me.
I haven’t been able to get into Twitter much yet, but I’m still giving it a chance. It is kind of overwhelming and redundant all rolled into one.
My “tweets” are set to private, though I pretty much approve anyone who requests to follow me. I just have it set up that way to avoid certain “unwanted” people.
I originally had mine set to private too but I couldn’t post the widget on my blog if I kept it that way so I changed it and I totally know what you mean about the “unwanted” people.
