I’m One Lucky Sumbeach

Posted By Teeni on October 30, 2008

Yeah, that’s right.  I said “sumbeach.”  LOL.  Okay enough with the juvenile snickering and giggling.  This is serious business.  ;)

TGH and I recently attended a benefit for a neighbor who has an illness and is struggling with the burden of medical bills.  We had never attended a benefit before so we didn’t know what we were getting into.

Well, it turned out to be a lot of fun.  And let me tell you, if you ever have to attend one of these things you should bring me with you!  There was a cover charge to get in, there was a cash bar, and there was a band and a DJ.  Plus there was a ton of food that people had brought as well as a stack of boxes of pizza from the local pizza shop.  There were raffle tickets and door prizes.  You bought raffle tickets and got to place them in the bags of the prizes you wanted to win.  There were baskets of bath and body products, baskets of wine and cheeses, small appliances, gift certificates, a two night stay at Old Orchard Beach, and other things for prizes.  And you could also buy 50/50 tickets which would send 50 percent of the money of the tickets sold to the gentleman who had the medical bills and 50 percent would go to the winning ticket holder.  Local businesses had chipped in some of the prizes and some people had donated things to be given as prizes.  I was impressed by how nicely everything was done.

TGH and I really didn’t know anyone there since the only other neighbors we recognized were actually working at tending the bar.  So we found a seat among the workmates of the fellow the benefit was being thrown for.  But before long, I started feeling that inner glow that emanates from within and works its way right up to your eyeballs.  I was enveloped in the anticipation and the knowledge that something good was going to happen.  No matter that TGH just thinks it was an effect of the two beers I drank. Pfffbbbt!

Before you knew it, they started calling winning numbers for the raffles.  I couldn’t wait for them to call my number because I knew I was going to jump up and yell, “Bingo!” just to be different from the other winners.  Although I wasn’t the first winner, it wasn’t long before they called my number and I got to yell, “Bingo,” just liked I planned!  I was super happy but not really surprised.  I won a lovely glass panini maker.  Woo-hoo.  I love kitchen gadgets!  :)

I still had that feeling though and I told everyone at the table that we were sitting at the lucky table.  Soon, two of the other three couples at our table also won prizes.  There was one gentleman at our table who came without his wife and I looked over at him and told him he was still going to win something and he DID!  TGH and I also won again - this time a gift certificate for $25!  Finally, when they called the winning number for the 50/50 prize which was for about $250, they called the number of the third couple at our table.  So EVERYONE at my table went home with a prize (or two) that night!  We were the only table where everyone won something.  How cool is that?  TGH and I figured that considering what we won, we probably broke even between the two beers and two waters we bought plus the cover charge and the raffles we purchased.  As a plus, we had a fun evening out filled with music and food.

I obviously don’t know how to master this power because we didn’t win the big prize of the night which was a 32-inch flat screen television.  But hey, you can’t be greedy, right?  ;)

Aw that sounds like lots of fun and for a good cause too!

It really was a lot of fun and I do hope that the benefit ended up helping them out with medical bills. The guy and his wife are very sweet and are doing the best they can.

I love fun gatherings such as this. I am glad you won!!!! :)

Thanks, Debo! I am glad I went too. Now I have a good idea of how things work so if anyone else I know is putting one of these together, I’d be able to help in a larger capacity.

So I want to hear about all the paninis you make. Sounds like a fun night for a worthy cause and you sure were on a lucky streak. Let’s go to Vegas together.

Oh man do I love paninis! You know some people think that the best invention in this world was sliced bread but really it was TOASTED bread! LOL. I’m all for going to Vegas! I have never gambled though unless you count a couple of scratch cards and Bingo. I wouldn’t have a clue. But may be we could be a team like in the movie, Rain Man! ;)

I never win at those benefits! N and I are always invited to those, I drink and have fun but never win. Let us know how to harness the power too okay?

If I figure out, I will start a class on how to harness the power of positivity! Of course, I’ll be rich then and not have anything better to do with my time so why not? ;)

  6. DragonLady (79 comments.) says:

How about you take a trip down to NC and buy me some lottery tickets. LOL

LOL. Actually, I’d love to visit NC though. I’m sure your weather is warmer than mine!

    LOL @ Meez.

I want the 6/49 numbers for the next lotto. pick 6 numbers between 1 and 49.

If I get all six, we’ll be millionaires!

But if you’re not feeling the good mojo, then don’t bother. I’ll keep my ticket money. LOL

Great you had fun. It’s nice to get out. Good cause.

I’ll be feeling that glow tomorrow night. But it WILL actually be from beer though. ;)

I’m not feeling it right now so I won’t have you spend your ticket money. But if it hits me, I’ll send you an email. Or maybe you won’t need me to since you are going to be working on your own “glow.” LOL.

This really touches my heart that you would do that for someone that is ill !

I think it’s wonderful that they threw that benefit for him. He has Stage IIIb lung cancer. His wife and daughter did a lot of the work.

I gave you an award thing today but don’t have time to comment today- Jules birthday. Love the poop candies with eyes… kids like those sort of things.

Really? You did? Awesome! I’m coming right over to check it out! Thanks, Michelle! :)

That sounds like a really fun evening! Congratulations on winning the panini maker - what a cool prize, mmmmm I love paninis …
It sounds like most people went away with something, which is always a nice feeling. I hope lots of money was raised for your neighbour’s medical bills. It’s sad that treatment can cost so much, but great that the community was able to rally around and provide the support he needed.

Paninis are awesome! I hope lots of money was raised for them too. I am trying to arrange for us to get together with them for an afternoon of just coffee and chat so maybe I’ll find out more.

Way to go, Teeni. Winning twice too.

You know I had to look that up. I had never heard of a glass panini maker. I read about it. Mmmmm, now I’m hungry.

I hope some of you luck spreads to your reader’s. :)

Nah, it’s just all that good Karma coming back to you.

Aw, you are sweet. The glass panini maker is very fancy looking.

I’m going to a benefit Saturday night. Sadly, this will be the 2nd in one year, as two people I know have become paralyzed. But, it is fun to spend money when you know it’s going toward a good cause. I’m glad you had fun and supported a good cause.

P.S. I just spent 3 hours working on a post, come check it out when you get a chance. It’s about Halloween, of course!

Awesome! I’m THERE! **whooshes out the door**

What a nice event and evening. Congratulations on the booty you took home. ;) Oh, and on the stuff you won. :P Really though, that is too cool. :) And a good cause to boot. You can’t beat that.

You are 100% right! Thanks, Peter! :)

Oh, and duh… Happy Halloween! :D

Thanks! :) You too! Be safe and have fun!

I know that you would ship that TV to me had you won…huh Teeni? LOL! Sorry, I’ve been away, I’ve been extremely ill and am just now recovering from pneumonia. I didn’t feel sick until I was bed ridden. Anyway, Happy Halloween!

I’m so sorry to hear you were sick. I did start to think you were working on a big writing project or something. You have been missed. I hope you are feeling loads better now. Happy Halloween to you too, buddy. :) If I had won the television, TGH and I had already decided we would give it to the guy who the benefit was being held for. He really wanted one and we already have a television. So it would have just been another way to help him out.

  19. ozymandiaz (25 comments.) says:

why would you make glass panini?

LOL. The panini maker has a glass panel on top - it looks all futuristic. Glass paninis would be pretty painful to chew.

I just love that winning feeling. Wish I got it more often.

    I hear you. Me too.

    LOL. Sorry, Slyde. :)

Woohoo!! So exciting! I love winning things. I worked a charity auction a while back and placed a bid on a lovely guitar. I didn’t think about it the rest of the night because I was so busy, but it turned out I won it! I paid $50 for a $300 guitar. I have no idea how to play it, lol, but the money went to a good cause :D

That is awesome about the guitar! It’s so nice that the money went to a good cause. And who knows - maybe sometime you’ll get around to playing that guitar. If not, it would make a nice gift or get you some money in a pinch. You just never know.

  23. thebeadden (86 comments.) says:

I for got to mention that here, a panini is a bun.
Kind of like a tiny French Loaf of bakery bread.

That’s why I had to look it up. I was thinking…a glass panini maker? what is that? LOL!

I bet that is how it all started - someone probably took a panini bun and decided to make a pressed, toasted sandwich out of it and that is how we ended up with panini makers. Bless whoever that soul was who thought of it because they are yummy and can have whatever ingredients you like - vegan, vegetarian, flexitarian, meatatarian, whatever. :)

What a great idea & well done Teeni!

But how depressing anyone would need to have such a night to raise cash for medical bills.

So will they have to keep having fund-raisers until their illness is cured or something?

I honestly don’t know. I doubt that they made enough money to pay off their medical bills. I guess they could keep having benefits -I would certainly go to more of them, but they are a lot of work to put together and I don’t know that his wife could do it all again. I just hope it has raised awareness about his situation and maybe that will help them too. I will try and learn more as I hope to get together with them soon.

how cool ! a fun night out while doing a good deed! yay for you guys.

Reeeed? I don’t know why your name keeps getting longer. Lots of E’s in there!

  27. odette (68 comments.) says:

lucky you teeni, you actually won and got to say bingo! note to self: i have to remember saying that in case i win sometime in the future. :P

that’s a great initiative i must say, and that all those fun actually were for a good cause.

Maybe just visualising in my head that we were going to win helped? I don’t know. But it was a lot of fun and it was for a good cause so I’m glad. It would have been fun without the prizes but I admit it, I do like winning. :)

  28. javaqueen (122 comments.) says:

Totally kick ass. You helped someone in need, and got some free stuff too. Sounds like you two really had a good time. Someone put a lot of love and thought into that benefit and they have a big heart! It makes me smile to know there are people out there who care. Yay! Good story Teens!

You know, it was a nice way to get out in my own neighborhood and talk with people in the area too. I hope I can be of help to anyone around here who has to put one together in the future. :)
