Gingerbread Men

Posted By Teeni on November 19, 2008

I’m not really a big fan of gingerbread men.  I just don’t like gingerbread much I guess.  But I don’t mind me some rice crispy dude.

rice crispy dude

This was whipped up, along with a thermos of homemade hot chocolate, within a half hour.  I was going to visit my neighbor because his wife is in the hospital and we were going with another neighbor so I didn’t have much time or I would have given him some icing decoration too!

I used organic brown rice crispy cereal and a shallow gingerbread man shaped pan.  Those square buttons he is adorned with are Starburst candies (which, for my non-American friends, are about 1″ square juicy, tart, fruit flavored candies) so you can get a better feel for his size.  His eyes are chocolate covered raisins and his mouth is made of mini-gumdrops.  I need a bigger tray to serve him on.  And his left arm (or the arm on the right as you look at the photo) got a bit mangled when I over-enthusiastically tried to take him out of the pan before he was cool enough.  Don’t worry - the little part that broke off did not go to waste.  It went to waist.  Mine, specifically.  ;)

I don’t usually like shaped pans because so many of them are limiting but as you can see, this pan is pretty versatile.  Gingerbread, rice crispy and maybe even brownie men could be made in that pan!   :)  Also, it was fun when serving him up because I got to ask if anyone wanted an arm or a leg.

Rice crispy treats are a great treat that is quick to make, pleases most palates, and can fit many diets - vegetarian, gluten-free, etc.,  and they can also be pressed into lots of shapes, formed into balls, or be cut with cookie cutters while still warm (actually it may be easier to press them into a cookie cutter while they are still warm and let them cool there, rather than cutting with the cookie cutters).  Anyhoo - I thought you’d enjoy seeing him.  He made ME smile.  Of course, I got to eat him.

OMG damn, I am visiting you now just for your treats! I am so stealing some of your crafty cooking ideas for when I can cook/bake again! Or, you know I could just come hijack that themn from you when you make them. I can be such a devil sometimes!

LOL. Sorry to disappoint you, Kaylee, but most of the goodies I post have already been devoured for a few days by the time I post about them. On the other hand, I wouldn’t want to be the person who got between me and my food because that is one of a few times I turn into the ultimate she-bear biotch. Hell hath no fury like a hungry Teeni, let me tell you.

PS tell me he aint really that huge?

He’s about 15 inches tall and a foot wide at his widest part - where his arms are stretched out. So he is a pretty big rice crispy dude!

Oh Teeni! He’s so cute! Mangled right hand and all :) SO CUTE! What a great idea! I love this, and oh, how I love the taste of rice crispy treats! So yummy!

It’s amazing how many people love rice crispy treats. And they are so dang quick and easy. I’m saving this in my repertoire of quick throw-together food ideas.

    That is so cute!!!!

Thanks, Sheng! I’m coming over to visit your site soon.

That is a very big gingerbread man! Well, he’s not really a gingerbread man since he’s made out of ricies! ;-)
What a nice thing for you to make for your neighbour, I’m sure he appreciated it.

Yes, my neighbors are very appreciative. They are home bound - he’s 82 and she’s 77 or something around there. I will have to post about them sometime.

He looks delicious. I love rice crispy treats. What a nice and simple twist on a classic. I not a big fan of gingerbread either (but around this time of year Sonic serves up a mean gingerbread Sonic Blast that is out of this world). I’m gonna have to run this one by my sister. She’s always doing fun stuff like this with her seven (yes, seven) grandchildren. :P

Oh, definitely share with your sister - how cool that she has seven grandchildren. They must keep her lively! I’ve never been to a Sonic. Maybe they don’t have them around here. But a Sonic Blast sounds good.

Awww, too cute. I couldn’t possibly eat him, I’d feel bad!

LOL. It’s okay, Hay - he can be made with vegan marshmallow!

I LOVE GINGERBREAD MEN!!! I even mentioned that in my current post, haha :-D

    Love your rice crispy version!!

I am overdue in my blog visits. Got to go check your latest post. Thanks about my crispy guy! :) LOL

I was going to say something about the missing piece on his left arm. But you confessed to it already.

    Rice Crispies are yummy!

I have to fess up to stuff because I know eagle-eyes like yours are just dying to catch me when I do bad things. LOL.

That is so cool! I wish I was your neighbor - I would gobble that up ;)

If you were my neighbor, I’d be happy to make treats for you! I’d make healthy ones too!

Ah we are opposites on this one. I love gingerbread men (well, anything gingerbread - let’s not be sexist or species-ist here!)but I like them naked and unadorned!!!

LOL. Well, you know, I should probably give gingerbread another try since it’s been a long time since I decided I didn’t like it as a kid. Tastes can change. I love that you are not being sexist and would love all gingerbread people equally. LOL. So, no icing even? LOL@ naked.

    Heehee! :)

I’ll take rice treats over ginger anyday…. very cute. I bet it is really delicious with the brown rice!

You know, I couldn’t really tell the difference in taste between the brown rice and regular rice crispy cereals. I do think the brown rice was a smaller, rounder puff of cereal though so it gave my rice crispy guy and even cooler looking “pebbly” texture than the other kind would have.

He is so stinkin’ cute! And you are so clever! I do love gingerbread in any way shape or form but I also love rice crispy treats. I’m afraid if I had made him I would have carelessly yanked him out of the pan so I could eat all of his missing bits.

LOL. I can understand that. I mean who wants to serve something until they are absolutely sure it tastes great, right? ;)

I have a taste for Rice Crispies treats now…

    Sorry. :)

  17. Memarie Lane (41 comments.) says:

cute! you can also use different kids of cereal, and throw in dried fruit.

I was wondering how Cheerios or other cereals would be. I’ve also been seeing some rice crispy bar recipes with peanut butter and chocolate in them. I like the dried fruit idea. I also might want to see if I can form his face and other adornments right in the mold with the rice crispies. Less chance of them falling off. Hmmm. Lots of things to try here.

That is too cute! I love crisp rice treats, mmmm. I always fail at gingerbread making… Is it supposed to be that dang hard and crusty?

  19. Hannah (13 comments.) says:

    Ha, this is too cute!

Thanks, Hannah! :) I thought it came out pretty good considering it was a rush job.

Gingerbread is best served warm, or at least, fresh. Do give it another go.

I am willing to give it another go. Warm sounds good too. And maybe whipped cream?

  21. Sterling "Chip" Camden (61 comments.) says:

I love gingerbread — but I also love rice krispie treats. They love me too, they hug my waist and won’t let go.

    Me too, Chip, me too!

That looks so cute, and yummy! I’m totally craving the crispies now.

Yeah, those are dangerously addictive little critters! LOL

You cant be as mean as my dog!

    Probably meaner even.

He is so cute. My daughter makes Bundt cakes and has different shaped pans. She has a turkey one and I think a castle. I used to have a T-shirt pan and all the cakes I made were T-shirts when the kids were little. Now I just keep away from all sweets. I have to if I am ever going to succeed at WW. I had to laugh at waste and waist. The brown rice cereal makes it more nutritious too.

Oh, the T-shirt pan is a great idea because you can write all kinds of slogans on them! I have a T-shirt cookie cutter and can’t wait to use it!

Teeni, you are the best! I love coming here because I never know what to expect. I love it! I have never seen such a big crispy dude!

    Such a great idea. Thanks!

Thanks so much, BeadDen! Your comment makes me smile. I do like to keep things interesting over here and keep you all on your toes. I hope there is something for everyone. Lots of variety at the tea room, you know. Shhh - sometimes I even serve coffee to my java loving buddies. :) :) :)

Poor me if I didn’t get to eat him. What a tease he was - looking all scrumptious and yummy. LOL!

He is so perfect! Please don’t eat’em!

Uh-oh. Sorry, Debo. Too late.

Holy Gingerbread! I sweartogod this has inspired me to copycat your lovely creation and fix one for my son and daughter-in-law! They’re coming to visit for Thanksgiving next week and will most certainly prefer this confection to eating turkey!

    You’re a great blogger, sistah!
I’m adding you to my blogroll. :)

Oooh - they are so quick and easy to make! I had mine done within 1/2 hour and that included sticking him in the fridge a few minutes to make him come out of his pan easier. I hope you make one and please take a picture so we can see! :) Thanks for the blogroll add! I’m coming to visit your site too!

Look how sweet he is. Mmmm, yummy. Back in my old days I decorated pies @ TCBY. I loved it. How fun you are trying this out. I look forward to imagining what all of your cakes and gingerbread men taste like! I love the new tagline, by the way.

Wow! You decorated pies? How did you get out of that without weighing 500 pounds? I love pie! Thanks about the tagline - Trisha did a good job. :)

  31. Evyl (120 comments.) says:

    That’s a big dude.

Yup. Biggest rice crispy dude that I’ve ever seen. But if anyone has seen bigger, send me a link!

  32. Trisha (13 comments.) says:

I always add a cup of peanut butter to mine. I loves me some peanut butter!!
    But yours is way cuter!

I would like to try that too. TGH loves peanut butter. I think I could handle that as long as I added some of my fave semisweet chocolate chips in there too! ;)

  33. michaelm (3 comments.) says:

he wouldn’t last 5 minutes in this house.
    ~m

He really didn’t last very long. But I need to have more people the next time I make such a big rice crispy dude. LOL.

  34. odette (68 comments.) says:

    15 inches tall!!! wow!
he’s a goodlooking fella, and if you hadn’t mentioned the mangled arm, i wouldn’t see it. :)

Yeah - it was a big pan, but it is shallow like a jelly-roll pan so it was really perfect for smooshing some rice crispy treats into. Plus the pan didn’t have a lot of detail which makes anything in it stick less. Thanks!

I think I need to talk somebody around here into taking that class! I could use some goodies!

It’s fun. But I bet you could actually get sick of eating cake taking these classes. **slaps hand over mouth** Did I actually SAY that?!!

mmmm cakes, rice crispy men…. i’m salivating, my poor gallbladdery dieting self can’t take much for of this… i might take a bite outta my screen~!

Sorry, I don’t mean to torture you! Rice crispy dudes are hard though - once you see one, it’s like you gotta have one! Anyway, I’m hoping you feel tons better after your surgery!

Thank you, Lupingirl! He went over well. And tasted good too! LOL.

  39. caryn (5 comments.) says:

hey teeni, does it make you sad to eat something so adorable? what do you bite first? i always save the head for last, but the hubby rips them off first ;-)

LOL. Nope, I don’t feel too sad eating them. It is the one time I pretend to be evil and enjoy picking them to pieces and eating them. heehee. I save the heads because they look funny as you are eating the rest of them. That way the last thing you eat is a big happy face. :)
