Roses and Cake and a Guest Post!
Posted By Teeni on November 22, 2008
This is the last cake I decorated during my class.
As you can see, I am finally getting pretty good at smoothing the icing. It makes a big difference in how the whole cake looks, I think. I’ve started off with some vines to put flowers on.
Then I added some ribbons and “sweet peas.”
And next - the roses!
My frosting was a little dry, but I thought they came out pretty good. We ran out of time during the last class so at home, I finished off my cake by playing around with different pressures and angles of piping around the edges.
It turned out to be quite the fancy, frilly looking cake. LOL. I made this cake in a regular loaf pan and there were two layers of filling. It was an organic lemon cake with a lemon curd for a filling! Talk about a yummy cake - this one was delish! I shared this with my elderly neighbors and we all liked it. They requested I leave them seconds. Fortunately, I still had plenty to save for TGH!
I hope to learn more about cake decorating, whether I am able to afford more classes or not. I’m certainly not going to stop trying, anyway!
Oh, before I forget - I wrote a guest post for a dear friend and I believe it will be published tomorrow - I’ll put up a link to it as soon as I see it!

I’m always amazed at how some people have such a talent for that sort of thing. I can make a cake that will taste great, but it won’t be pretty. LOL
Well, mine still have a way to go but they are a little better now. But really that is the most important thing - that they taste great. Heck you can always break them into pieces, layer them with pudding and/or whipped topping and make a trifle out of them if they are too ugly to look at!
I’m with DragonLady. Close your eyes when you eat my cake.
LOL. Oh, you are a trifle maker too?
You know those are some killer looking roses dearie? Hell to the yeah! I would so scrape one of those babies right off and slurp it down- oh, it looks so yumma!
That takes a lot of patience and I give you mad props….. You are not helping my cake addiction lately… I can tell ya that. All of a sudden, the cravings are coming back hard
HELP!
OOps! SOrry JQ! I would gladly make you a bouquet of frosting flowers.
YUM! May I have the recipe for that cake? It sounds divine!
Hay, it was just an organic lemon cake mix in a box this time. I was more concentrating on the decorating and the filling this time around. Lemon curd makes a wonderful cake filling, just so you know! Oh yum!
That is one beauticious cake! Very fancy shmancy! Sounds delicious too.
Thanks, Birdpress. I felt like it belonged in a frilly little victorian house! LOL. It tasted really good too! I will definitely buy that mix again.
This is the ultimate torture to me missy! Looking at my favorite kind of cake while in the hospital? That’s torture to me!I need the revipe for that too lol! Too me this is your best cake so far good job!
Thanks. I thought this was the best so far too.
It makes sense that I’d get better with lessons though.
recipe. Oh, and teeni, one more thing its in the subject of cakes…..have you ever tried a chocolate custard filled cake? Those are good too oh and chessecake….oh the pain I am in now.
Ps. would you delete the two that went to your spam file?
Just how many of these are there? I think I got them all.
I have never been able to make good cake decorations, but my sister can. She lords it over ne, but I have talents in other things.
Well, it isn’t right for her to lord it over you. But you can get her back by requesting very elaborate cakes in the future. LOL. And yes, you ARE very talented in many areas! I love seeing what you’ve done.

Yes, I have tried one and it was delicious. Okay, I will.
okay your spam file likes me today
I could be wrong but I think it is the sheer number of messages it is seeing from your address that keeps catching them, Kaylee. Why not try limiting your comments to one or two per post? That might keep them from going to spam.
Looks good enough to eat.
You know, now you need a fancy cake dish to plate your creations for the photos.
Yeah, that would be nice. I will have to keep my eyes open for one. All I have now is a tupperware cake-taker thingy. LOL.
Very nice!
Thank you!
Oh WOW Teeni you have come a long way, this cake is so pretty. I like the way you showed us step by step how you put the flowers on. Neato!
Thanks, Debo! It has been fun!
It looks great, Teeni! Is the trick to getting smooth icing using a very hot knife to smooth it out? That’s what I do, and it works okay … I’d love to know if there’s a better way though.
The icing flowers look beautiful - too good to eat!
Thank you, Hannah! Actually, the trick with the icing was to wait until it was dry enough to touch then smooth it using a piece of parchment paper! It had to be dry enough so it doesn’t stick to the parchment paper and become a mess! It works great for the icing made with shortening like we used in class, but I’m not sure if it would work with other frostings so your hot knife might be best for some - I will have to remember that one too.
Mighty fine lookin’ cake you have there. Lemon cake has always been my favorite.
Yummy!
Now practice, practice, practice. I’m sure you won’t hear any complaints from the neighbors or TGH.
I know I wouldn’t.
Thanks, Peter! I will definitely keep practicing! LOL. Yeah, I wouldn’t complain if someone gave me cake either.
I leave here HUNGRY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
OhhhhwWEE Looks good
I’m secretly trying to make everyone else crave cake so they will all get fat. That way, I will look so much thinner!
LOL.
Wow Teeni, that is really pretty, great job! The class was a great idea, I hope you enjoyed it
Thanks, Kami! I did enjoy it. It was fun.
Wow! It’s soooo cool watching your cake talent get better and better! I can tell you’re having a blast, which is way cool!
Thank you Sue! It really is fun! I will keep on practicing on my own so you may see more here in the future. Good to see you! I was just at your place!
Wow, Teeni, that cake is fantastic. It looks so delicious (I’m a cake addict) and you did a beautiful job. Ugh…I really need cake right now.
Thanks, Wendy! I’m glad you think it came out well.
Sorry for the temptation.
I love the roses *–* I wish I could do half of that. What is the recipe for your icing? In my house we don’t like icing very much (I don’t even like cake) but when I make it it’s always too runny. I can’t make something like that XD
Thank you Cath. This recipe is mostly vegetable shortening mixed with confectionary (or powdered) sugar. This is what we use in class, but at home you could use more butter instead of of shortening if you aren’t vegan. The recipe is 1 cup of shortening, 4 cups of powdered sugar, and two tablespoons of water or milk. You can add food coloring of your choice. This makes a stiff icing that can be used to make roses. Take the same recipe but add a bit more water - a teaspoon at a time - to get a thinner icing to frost the whole cake with. I hope that helps. And I’m sure you could do it too if you practiced.
That’s purty.
Thank you! I don’t know about the decorating part but I sure would like to make that cake again in all it’s lemony goodness! Yum! But maybe I’ll wait for warmer weather to return for that particular flavor.
I go away for the week-end and you spring this on me…ROSES!!!
Already doing roses! You are amazing. The colours, the decorating, it’s beautiful! Best of all it’s lemon.
I am so very impressed.
I hope you don’t mind me doing this and you can delete it after but…
I don’t know JavaQueen, just see her posting here. I was searching ideas for Christmas and came across this site. I thought that it would be something she would get a kick out of. They are looking for people to write about coffee too!

I thought of you when I posted them.
I could stand more practice but I thought they were pretty decent for a first timer. And yes, the lemon was delicious! Thanks for your kind words.
Oh, I will direct JavaQueen to your link - that was so nice of you to think of her. She is a one-in-a-million blogger.
Oh my gosh - this cake looks beautiful AND delicious! Now I’m really hungry.
Thank you! Actually I’m a little sick of cake right now. Wonder why?
Very cute! I have always wanted to get into cake decorating. I think I would be good at it, but I’ll never know because I don’t have the time to try. *sigh*
Aw, MJ. You will get there. Things always change and I’m sure you will get a chunk of time in the future. If you really want it to happen, it will happen. Of course, I hope you will share your adventure in photos with us too!
teeni, you are definitely a fast-learner, you have cakes this good already and you have just started!
Thank you, Sheng! I need to keep practicing and I could certainly use some more classes but taking this class got me all excited and interested in it so that was fun!
That turned out amazing! Thanks for showing us the progress photos! It actually taught me quite a bit about the process of decorating… I didn’t realize the order things were supposed to be done in!
Thank you for your kind words. Yeah, it really is a whole process and that was all new to me too.
Teeni, those roses are really good! I want to learn how to make roses… You should post a video of your making one so I can learn!
Thanks, Talina. Hmm. Maybe I will do that! I’m sure you would pick it up in no time!
That cake looks SCRUMMY Teeni! You will have to install taste-a-vision on this blog soonest!
Well done on your cakery progress so quickly!
LOL. Thank you, Laura! And yes, taste-a-vision sounds good but may not be conducive to a good diet.
WOW - Well done! Cake looks amazing. thanks for sharing zesty!
Thanks for the kind words, Zesty! Nice to see you again. I didn’t think it was too terrible for a beginner but I am sure I can use lots more practice so I will try and continue working on my decorating skills. I need to add your blog to my reader.
wow, your flowers look great and from judging by the way your vines look you have really improved your piping skills! i am so impressed! i hope you get to take more classes and i hope that i get to sign up for a few in the near future!!!
Thanks so much, Natalie! I’m glad you noticed about my vines! I will keep practicing whether I can find another class or not and I do hope if you get to take one that you will share your results and successes with us!
Awesome! Happy Thanksgiving!!
Thank you, CuriousC!
