DO Try This At Home

Most of you know that I love to play games both here on this blog and in real life. Well, TGH and I had a load of laughs over this last impromptu game we played and anyone can play it. There are hardly any rules and a whole lot of creativity. The only supplies you need are some paper and writing implements and a timer. This is great to play with kids. Go ahead and use some of those kids’ write-on and erase pads if you like to save paper. You can use a camera to save anything awesome that comes out of this. We actually did this a couple of months ago and the pictures still make me laugh today.
So, all you need to do is set everyone up with some drawing implements and then come up with a theme to agree on. The theme can be a scene, an object, a situation, whatever. But I will tell you that the more open you leave it, the better. Once everyone has agreed on a theme (or you can have each person take a turn coming up with a theme) you then have one minute to draw it. Each person just draws whatever comes to mind with that theme. Here are some of the results that TGH and I had.
The first theme was, “Hamsters.” Photos on the left are mine and the ones on the right are TGH’s (click to make bigger).
As you can see, we both liked the idea of the little rodents being inside their cages. TGH added much in the way of architecture for his hamsters but obviously didn’t care about their health and well being as he provided no food or water for the little guys. No wonder they are so much smaller than mine.
The next theme was, “Zoo Scene.”
It’s interesting that we both chose to include the monkey exhibits in our artwork and all I can say about TGH’s elephant is that he is clearly suffering from a sinus infection.
The next theme was, “Scene from a Video Game.”
I wonder what is says about us that I chose to depict Mario innocently chasing a mushroom across the screen, while TGH went in the other direction and chose to depict Donkey Kong violently trying to mow Mario down with giant drums of oil? Hmmm.
The next theme was, “Car.”
Well, isn’t this nice? I depict a nice safe scene, complete with lines on the road, bumpers on the car, a traffic light, and a child, safely strapped into his car seat the back seat of the vehicle. TGH obviously shows no regard for safety, only being interested in gadgets like antennae, turbo scoops, and tires that are almost guaranteed to be a road hazard. Remind me not to get into a car with him any time soon.
The next theme was, “Castle.”
Well, well, well, it looks like we both included little flags on top of our castles! But that, my friends, is where the similarities end. While I have opted to depict a strong fortress capable of fending off the mightiest of foes, TGH has created a torture chamber for a poor damsel in distress. Not only that, but his castle suffers from shoddy workmanship - those bricks just don’t look like they could hold up to much. But I guess they wouldn’t have to since he went and left his drawbridge wide open for attack. Sheesh.
The next theme was, “Picnic.”
As you can see, I decided to take a lame subject and make it exciting by choosing to include radioactive mutant gargantuan ants, advancing to devour the goodies left out by unsuspecting nature lovers. All I have to say about TGH’s picnic is, “boring.”
The next theme was, “Camping.”
This is just typical. The theme is “camping” but somehow TGH interpreted it as “beach.” You can probably recognize one of his shoddy little sand castles in the lower right corner. I had to ask him what the things at the bottom of the picture were and he said, “Those are our feet. We are laying on towels under the sun and that is all you can see of us in the picture.” Note to self: I draw a pretty good looking campfire and TGH can NOT draw feet.
The next theme was, “Amusement Park Ride.”
You can see here that I’ve decided to go with an innocent classic, the carousel, complete with realistic horses. But TGH has taken this theme to depict a ride so horrible that it has to be enclosed in a building so you can’t see the terror you are about to witness until you are trapped inside after waiting for hours in long lines to get in. It’s so bad it has to have a warning on it.
Finally, the last theme was, “Draw Your Anger.”
Again with the misinterpretations. I drew my anger as a physical dark cloud shooting lightning bolts out of it on either side. I’m so creative. TGH thought I said to draw the SUBJECT of my frustrations and therefore drew a self-portrait.
If any of you try this at home, and I highly encourage it, I’d love to see what you come up with. Enjoy!

LOL, I love it!
I am so going to get the kids to do that.
Yay! I hope you have as much fun as I did and please let me know how it goes. By the way, I had tried to comment on your blog a few days back but I think you close the comments after a certain time and I was too late. But just wanted you to know I’ve been trying to catch up on my reads!
Oooh, what a fun game!!! My boys would LOVE this, so we will definitely play it together as a family and I will try and remember to take photos and share our results.
Thanks so much for sharing this! I love cheap (well, free!) games that the whole family can enjoy and look forward to trying this one out.
I love the similarities and differences between yours and TGH’s drawings. I have to say that the self-portrait he drew at the end is a very good likeness!! And just for the record, I think I would have drawn anger in a similar way to you
It really is a lot of fun so prepare for the giggles. I know I picked on TGH a bit here but I think he secretly likes it when I tease him on my blog. LOL. Would love to hear about your experience as a family playing this.
The last one made me laugh the most but your commentary was priceless. What a fun game!
Thanks, Kami! I guess it’s true that some of the best pleasures in life are the simplest.
I cannot draw as good as you do, but really, this is one great idea.
Aw, thanks, Sheng! But you don’t have to be good at it - actually it’s even more fun if you are BAD at it! LOL!
I’m sorry, but at first I thought your drawing of your anger was something stuck in your digestive tract.
Haha! It does kind of look like a furball or something, doesn’t it? Well, I never claimed to be an artist so that’s my story and I’m sticking to it.
A true geek would draw Donkey Kong! LOL
I have to agree with you, Mac!
Hey, you should try this with you nephew(s). I bet you would have a blast.
Oh, that does look like such a fun game to play! Too bad my 14 year old son is currently ‘too cool’ to play games with his mom anymore!
Aww, Meleah! That is so sad. I can’t imagine ANYone NOT thinking that you are the coolest! You definitely ARE. But I remember being 14 too, so I hear you. Well, keep it in mind for the next rainy day or when he forgets how much cooler he is. LOL. <3
Ahahahahhaha! Thanks Teeni! <3
“I depict a nice safe scene, complete with lines on the road, bumpers on the car, a traffic light, and a child, safely strapped into his car seat the back seat of the vehicle.”
Safe? You call driving on the wrong side of the road “safe”?
I don’t want to get in a car with you or your husband!
LOL! Oops. Um, what I meant was that I depicted my scene in Europe! Yeah, that’s it!
Happy Thanksgiving Teeni!
Aw thanks, DragonLady! Hope yours was wonderful too!
These are some great drawings - and you know, this would make a great multi blogger theme! We could all draw them in the same week … even DCR (( hehee ))
Happy week to the Teeni family
Oooooh! A multi-blogger game would be so cool. Love that idea! I will have to think about putting that into play! You are awesome!
I just wanted to leave ONE MORE comment, as I like to be at the top of the list
Aw, you are always on top of my list no matter where your comments are! <3
Haha, I love this game! We have a blackboard at home that I draw on nearly every day! (Today it is a bear, fighting a zombie.)
Hi Leaf! Long time no see! I hope you are well. I’ve looked for you in the past but thought I lost you. Thanks for commenting so I can find you again. But now I have to wonder who wins on your blackboard - the bear or the zombie? LOL!
Hi ! That looks like something my kids would love….especially since they love to draw.
Sometimes the best things are the simplest, huh? Good to see you! I’ll be by to visit shortly!
Hey Teeni!
Yeah, I took my blog off it’s public setting for a couple of years, hence your inability to find it!! I’m super glad to be back.
Definitely the bear wins. Mostly because the zombie is falling to pieces, and slow anyway.
LOL! I played a video game with the husband yesterday and the zombies were killing US! Yikes. I’m glad you are back too!
